Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to assess how counselor trainees' gender role conflict, stage of the gender role journey, and emotional stereotype endorsement relates to clinical judgment toward male clients. Participants included counselor trainees enrolled in master's and doctoral level counselor education programs (n=117) recruited via CESNET list serve and email requests. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a male or female client vignette, identical with the exception for the name and gender pronouns. All participants completed the Gender Role Conflict Scale, Gender Role Journey Measure, and Beliefs About Men's Emotions scale before reading the male or female vignette. Participants then completed the Client Symptoms Severity Scale, Counselor Rating Scale, and Theoretical Domain and Intervention Choice scales. Results indicated that counselor trainees rated male vignette conditions as more severe and less likeable. Gender Role Journey Measure phase of Acceptance of Traditional Gender Roles and client vignette emerged as predictors of gender reinforcing counseling interventions, more strongly with male clients. The results provided evidence of counselor trainee gender bias. The limitations of the study and implications are discussed including recommendations for counselor educational and training.

Book excerpt: This study assessed the relationship between self and other awareness as defined in the Integrated Development Model of Supervision (IDM) and gender role conflict in male counselors treating male clients. Participants included male counseling and clinical psychologists and trainees (N=93) recruited from academic programs and training sites. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two conditions where they read a case summary involving a fictional traditional or non-traditional male client. Afterward participants rated their reactions to the case summary utilizing the Client Rating Scale (CCS), the Gender Role Conflict Scale (GRCS), and the Supervisee Level Questionnaire- Revised (SLQ-R). Results indicated that counselors endorsed significantly greater comfort in working with the non-traditional male client. The restrictive emotionality subscale of the GRCS produced a small, significant effect size when regressed on client comfort scores. The inter-variable correlation matrix demonstrated several significant relationships in theoretically congruent directions with small to moderate effect sizes. Contrary to hypotheses, no moderation effects were observed among variables. Finally, the SLQ-R proved to be a stronger predictor of client comfort scores than mere estimated quantity of previous male clients.

Book excerpt: Current trends from the fields of mental health, criminal justice, and sociology suggest that despite men's significant mental health problems (i.e. Moscick, 1995; Sue, Sue, & Sue, 2003; Greenfield & Snell, 1999; Follman, Aronsen, & Pan, 2013), they are much more reluctant to seek mental health help than women (Addis & Mahalik, 2003; Olfson & Marcus, 2010). Sociologists and psychologists have suggested that this disparity in help seeking can be largely explained by a cultural mismatch between the context of masculinity and the context of psychotherapy. Psychologists have called for a paradigm shift in the way clinical services are rendered to men, and have suggested that approaches informed by a positive psychology perspective may be appealing to men (i.e. Brooks, 2010; Kiselica, 2011; Kiselica & Englar-Carlson, 2010). The current study was inspired by this call, and was designed to explore men's reactions to three different therapeutic approaches (cognitive, emotion-focused, & positive). Brief video vignettes exemplifying the approaches were developed, validated, and shown to male participants from large and small universities in the Midwest and Southeast U.S. in this randomized control design. A k-groups ANOVA, correlational analysis, and ANCOVA were used to determine what effect masculine gender role conflict and counseling approach had on help seeking attitudes, counselor social influence, expectations about counseling, and hope for counseling. Results indicated no significant relationships between counseling approach and help seeking attitudes, counselor social influence, expectations about counseling, or hope for counseling. However, it was found that certain patterns of gender role conflict were significantly negatively related to help seeking attitudes, and aspects of counselor social influence and expectations about counseling. Implications, future directions, and limitations of the study are discussed.

The key to engaging men in therapy, Brooks argues, is devising a "male-friendly" therapy, involving flexibility, consciousness-raising in men's groups and other "out-of-office" settings, and the therapist's emphasis on an authentic empathetic bond with the troubled male client to discover meaning in the client's relational pressures and problems at work, with loved ones, and, most of all, with himself.
