The motivating factor in this study was the decline in the participation by the female student. When members of the opposite sex are present, young women become disengaged from many of the learning goals of PE. Over a 9-week period, my students completed 5 surveys reflecting upon their current experience. The challenges facing equal opportunities for girls in coed classes are the same facing all students in education. Just as smaller class size produces more favorable results, creating better learning environments in required courses through single-sex segregation also requires support from the public and the proper funding.
