Book excerpt: Despite the prevalence of students with mild disabilities in special education and the legal mandate to consider assistive technology to support their needs, research suggests low rates of assistive technology use by this population (Bouck, Maeda, & Flanagan, 2012; Derer, Polsgrove, & Rieth, 1996; Quinn, Behrmann, Mastropieri, & Chung, 2009). One major barrier to assistive technology consideration and implementation cited by teachers is a lack of training. This study examined changes in teachers0́9 knowledge, perceptions, and implementation of assistive technology as a result of a hands-on teacher training session. Participants included 61 regular and special education teachers and administrators in secondary public schools in one Western state. Participants completed a pre-training survey measuring their knowledge and experience with assistive technology, as well as their attitudes about using assistive technology. They then participated in a hands-on training session about assistive technology held at their school. After the training session, participants completed a post-training survey, as well as a follow-up survey given 30 days after the training session. The follow-up survey measured changes in participant implementation of assistive technology following the training session. Results of this study show that a teacher training session improved regular and special education teachers0́9 and administrators0́9 knowledge and perceptions of assistive technology. The findings also show that 49% of respondents to the follow up survey reported using assistive technology in their classrooms following the training session. Implications for future research are discussed.

A total of four secondary schools participated in this study. Within these schools, 110 general education teachers completed surveys. The survey included three subscales: usage of assistive technology, attitudes and beliefs about assistive technology, and supports and barriers associated with assistive technology. There was one open-ended question that allowed participants to include their thoughts concerning assistive technology. Additional data were collected through interviews and focus groups. Twelve general education teachers participated in two focus groups (one middle school level and one high school level) and four special education teachers as well as four principals completed an interview. The majority of participants was female, held a bachelor's degree, and had less than five years of teaching experience. The data revealed that teachers understood the importance of using assistive technology but felt unprepared to effectively use devices because of lack of a lack of resources, limited planning time, adequate technical support, disjointed professional development, uncertainty of how to use assistive technology within their content area, and poor infrastructure. However, the effectiveness of using assistive technology devices, materials, and services in supporting the needs of students with disabilities is decidedly limited due to several obstacles including a lack of teacher preparation and insufficient funding of assistive technology services. These obstacles result in students who are not given the opportunity to potentially benefit from assistive technology as well as students who may access to AT services but do not have the proper training and support to effectively use the technology. In an effort to investigate the use, perceptions, knowledge, and level of AT preparation or training in assistive technology by currently employed special education teachers, this study employed a brief ten item survey which was distributed to secondary level special education teachers. Results from the survey indicate a general lack of pre-service preparation and in-service training in assistive technology for special education teachers. The results indicate a need for teacher preparation programs and school districts to provide adequate AT training opportunities as well as securing the funding required to support these programs. Book excerpt: With the increasing use of Education Assistant Special Needs (EASN) to support students with special needs in regular settings, it is important to consider the tools and knowledge that they bring to the role. The use of assistive technology (AT) as a support for students with special needs in Australia and globally is becoming more prevalent as the technology becomes increasingly affordable and more widely available. Consequently, it is important that the staff who are most likely to be working closely with these students are competent and confident in the use of AT. The purpose of this research was to investigate EASNsU+2019 perceptions of themselves as users and facilitators of AT in the classroom and to examine how skills learnt in a training situation might transfer into a classroom setting. Perceptions of EASN in regards to AT have not previously been examined, even though these perceptions may potentially impact upon if, when and how, AT is utilised in the classroom. Eighteen EASN were recruited to participate in the study. These participants were drawn from five primary school settings in the Perth, Western Australia, metropolitan area. The EASN were all employed to work with students with special needs, and indicated that they previously had little training in the area of AT. As part of the study, an eight-week training program was designed for the EASN to incorporate a wide range of assistive technologies, from low-tech to high-tech, across a number of functional areas (i.e. learning disability, vision and hearing impairments, physical disability). The training was targeted towards the EASN and their role as described by the level 3 Job Description Form (Department of Education and Training, 2002c) and the Competency Framework for Education Assistants U+2013 Special Needs (Department of Education and Training, 2008). A mixed method study incorporating a combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies underpinned the research. Participants were asked to complete a skills test, questionnaire and focus group interview at three phases of the study U+2013 pre-training, post-training, and after a ten week maintenance period. The data collected were then analysed using non-parametric statistics and qualitative coding. Together the data allowed the researcher to explore the perceptions of the EASN to using and facilitating the use of AT and to determine the level of skill development as a result of the training. The use of a ten week maintenance period also assisted the researcher to determine how the training had transferred into the classroom setting. The research revealed significant impacts for the EASN in the areas of confidence for using and facilitating AT with students with special needs and highlighted areas where barriers to the use of AT were evident. Recommendations to address these barriers are presented. Future avenues of research are also highlighted. These areas of research would provide further insight into the use of AT and how EASN are utilised in school settings to support students with special educational needs who are using AT.

The participants were a total of 97 students in a single university in a large urban city. The study reports the participants' demographic characteristics and survey responses were analyzed using SPSS to include frequencies, percentages, standard deviations, and means. A non-parametric test was conducted to examine group differences on the following: courses taken, current work assignment, time in the program, and the type of credential program. Implications and recommendations for further studies are provided based on the result.

A mixed-methods design, which included a survey consisting of open- and closed-ended items elicited information about teachers' AT knowledge and training, their basic computer literacy, their perception of administrative support for access to and implementation of AT, the usefulness of AT, and the factors that encourage or discourage AT use in the classroom. Results of correlational analysis suggested that computer literacy and AT knowledge were significantly positively correlated with perceived usefulness of AT and a thematic analysis further identified that training and student factors may influence AT use. Implications for pre-service and professional development teacher training are discussed given the consistency of teacher-reported need for greater training opportunities for both students and teachers.

Barriers to assistive technology (AT) use and facilitators that impact assistive technology use were also identified and explored. The following research questions were addressed: 1) what do special education teachers know about assistive technology and its application in P-12 education; 2) to what extent do special education teachers perceive the Quality Indicators of Assistive Technology (QIAT) being present in their school districts; 3) what are the barriers to assistive technology use for special education teachers; and 4) what factors facilitate assistive technology use by special education teachers? A self-report online survey was administered to special education teachers in Alabama. The survey consisted of five sections: demographics, knowledge of assistive technology, indicators of assistive technology, barriers to assistive technology, and facilitators of assistive technology. Findings in this study uncovered a disparity in knowledge related to AT consideration, AT services, and AT tools. Participants perceived their knowledge level to be highest in the area of AT tools, especially low-tech and mid-tech devices. In addition, lack of knowledge and training, lack of device options, and lack of funding were most frequently reported as barriers to assistive technology use. Barriers and facilitators of assistive technology were found to have a significant impact on special education teacher knowledge. It is recommended that the Alabama State Department of Education collaborate with school districts and higher education institutions to create training options that equip special education teachers, present and future, to appropriately consider and implement assistive technology for students with disabilities. In addition, a re-examination of policies and procedures throughout the state is recommended to assure alignment with current practices and mandates associated with assistive technology.
