Book excerpt: "This action research study investigated the effect of integrating a reading program on fourth-grade students' reading comprehension and reading engagement. The research question of this study includes: How does implementing a reading program affect students' reading comprehension and reading engagement? Reading lessons were developed and implemented over a 4-week period. Qualitative and quantitative data was collected through pre-surveys and post-surveys, STAR reading scores, student work, informal observations, and field notes. These data collection instruments assessed students' comprehension and engagement in reading throughout the program. Research has demonstrated that using a variety of reading and writing strategies increases students' comprehension and engagement in reading. Results indicated that students' comprehension of the text was apparent through multiple writing activities, such as writing prompts, summaries of chapters, and writing their own endings of a book. Also, engagement levels were high throughout the reading program, especially during paired-reading and whole-class reading."--Abstract, p. 1.
