Book excerpt: This study was designed to assess the effectiveness of a six session cognitive-behavioral group intervention to improve coping skills for emotional regulation in male preadolescents and adolescents with attachment difficulties. There is a lack of research in the area of group interventions with male adolescents as well as interventions for adolescents with attachment difficulties. A multiple probe across groups and a multiple baseline across groups design were used in this study. The measures assessed difficulties in emotion regulation, coping strategies, adolescent adjustment, anger control, negative behaviors, and level of distress. Although there were no substantial findings and no hypotheses were supported, the current study did find that the participants enjoyed the group interaction and some wished to continue the group.

Nevertheless, the majority of research on evidence based interventions for children and adolescents focuses on single disorders. Furthermore, many youth receive mental health services through the school system, yet limited research explores the effectiveness of school-based interventions for children with comorbidity. Transdiagnostic constructs are core underlying mechanisms that transcend diagnostic categories and streamline interventions. Emotion regulation is a key transdiagnostic construct that is relevant to wide range of disorders in youth. This study is a single group pretest-posttest design with multiple measures. The project examines the effect of school-based cognitive behavior therapy for youth on emotion regulation and internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Participants were recruited from an ongoing clinical service and include 5th to 12th grade children. Three within-subjects t-tests were run comparing total scores on the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ; Goodman, 1997), the Cognitive Restructuring scale of the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents (ERQ-CA; Gullone & Taffe, 2012) and the Expressive Suppression scale of the ERQ-CA at pretest and posttest. Results indicated that 8 weeks of school-based group treatment did not result in a significant reduction in symptoms or significant improvement in emotion regulation.

According to attachment theory, open and flexible communication between parents and children around emotion signals promotes more adaptive emotion regulation (Bowlby, 1969/1982; Cassidy, 1994). Security of attachment in the family provides a template for later close relationships (Elicker, Egeland, & Sroufe, 1992; Kerns, Klepac, & Cole, 1996; Sroufe & Fleeson, 1996), but little is known about the concurrent relations between attachment to parents and peers and emotion regulation beyond the early childhood years (Kobak & Sceery, 1988; Shields, Cicchetti, & Ryan, 1997). The present study explored concurrent relations between attachment to parents and peers and emotion regulation in a sample of 69 adolescents, averaging 16 years in age. The study investigated two primary hypotheses: (1) Adolescents with secure representations of attachment to parents would be more likely to hold secure representations of peers; and (2) Representations of attachment to parents and peers would be associated with emotion regulation. Adolescents completed three self-report measures: the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (Armsden & Greenberg, 1987); the Adolescent-Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences (ACOPE; McCubbin, Thompson, & McCubbin, 1996); and the Emotion Regulation Checklist for Adolescents, a newly adapted 27-item measure of adolescent emotion regulation. Book excerpt: Research suggests that youth rates of mental health problems are high and that evidence-based treatments for these populations exist; however, there is a significant problem in accessibility of mental health services. Recent movements in the mental health field have shifted focus to transdiagnostic dimensions of behavior in attempt to target a broader range of psychological difficulties across larger populations. One such construct, emotion regulation, has been defined as an ability to have awareness and acceptance of emotions and control urges and impulses in order to behave towards a goal. Emotion regulation has been linked to numerous internalizing and externalizing behavioral patterns seen in adolescents and aligns well with areas targeted by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The purpose of this single-subject, A/B design, study was to examine the efficacy of a six-session ACT protocol for adolescents experiencing difficulties with emotion regulation. The study used the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale as the primary outcome measure, in addition to several self-report measures of general psychological functioning and processes related to the ACT model, and two computerized behavioral analogues of constructs related to emotion regulation. Eight participants enrolled in the study and six completed the pre- and post-treatment assessments. Four of the six completers demonstrated reliable improvements in emotion regulation. Some participants also demonstrated movement in the process measures targeted by ACT. The results of this study provide support for the use of ACT with adolescents and show preliminary promise for utilizing ACT to target emotion regulation.
