These models predict the distribution of forces among the muscles and the reaction force in the joint based on a given occlusal load. Little information is available regarding the accuracy of model predictions. The purpose of this study was to compare the pattern of model predicted jaw muscle forces with the pattern of electromyography (EMG) activity from those same muscles as constant bite force was moved around the dental arch. EMG recordings were made bilaterally from the anterior and posterior temporalis and masseter muscles of ten subjects while they bit with constant force on a transducer at seven positions around the dental arch. Both predicted model forces and EMG data were converted to standard scores allowing comparison of patterns at the various biting positions. EMG activity patterns for the masseter showed symmetrically decreasing activity on the ipsilateral and contralateral sides from a high point of activity at hte incisors. Model predictions for masseter suggested bilateral decreasing activity from the incisor are posteriorly, however, activity on the ipsilateral side was considerably high than corresponding positions on the contralateral side. This model asymmetry was in contrast to the symmetry in corresponding biting positions observed in the EMG activity patterns. Keywords: Biting; Musculoskeletal system; Theses. (KT).

Book excerpt: The present study found a reduction of anterior temporalis and masseter muscle EMG activity during both lateral excursive movement and excursive clenching on a maxillary splint. The average reductions during the movement phase were 81.8 + or - 14.0% with canine guidance and 81.6 + or - 19.2% with first molar guidance. The average reductions during the excursive clenching phase were 44.7 + or - 26.7% with canine guidance and 42.6 + or - 29.7% with first molar guidance. There was no statistically significant difference in the reductions of EMG activity for the two different guidance patterns. In this study there was a considerable variance in actual EMG scores between subjects. This intersubject variability was dealt with by a within subject design using percentage reductions of the EMG activity. These percentage reductions of EMG activity show that clenching during lateral movement reduced jaw muscle activity significantly more than clenching in excursive position for both guidance patterns. The jaw muscle activity was observed to be reduced during lateral movement and excursive position clenching. There was no statistically significant difference in the degree of reduction for either cuspid guidance or first molar guidance on a maxillary occlusal splint.

Book excerpt: Current mainstream treatments for temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are mainly conservative therapies. However, these conservative treatments are symptomatic treatments, not causal treatments. Therefore, the patients with severe symptoms have not been completely relieved. Evidence-Based Occlusal Management for Temporomandibular Disorders is a concise e-lecture which covers the following points: 1. When do the signs or symptoms of TMD emerge? 2. Should the signs or symptoms be left untreated? 3. When should the treatment start? 4. How should the occlusal discrepancy be examined? 5. How should occlusion at the BPOP (bite plate-induced occlusal position) (muscular contact position) be equilibrated? The e-lecture also demonstrates a positive outcome using causal treatment based on occlusal equilibration in the BPOP based on the evidence of a relationship between occlusal discrepancy and TMD. Therefore, this e-book shares insightful, evidence-based clinical data with interested readers such as dental clinicians and researchers around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive scientific investigation into every aspect of craniomandibular muscle function in both human and experimental animal studies. Topics discussed cover three broad areas: the anatomical, physiological, and histochemical aspects of these muscles; the special importance of these muscles to resting mandibular posture and mastication; and their role in clinically relevant problems involved with occlusion, craniomandibular disorders, and the growth and development of the cranioskeleton. Over 150 figures and tables are used to illustrate the concepts in these three areas. Methods for studying craniomandibular muscles are examined in depth, and the use of classically defined techniques such as electromyography and newer approaches using magnetic resonance spectroscopy and immunological identification of contractile proteins are discussed. Specialists in oral biology, orthodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, and craniomandibular disorders in schools and in private practice should consider this book an indispensable resource for their work and studies.
