Book excerpt: Since mesoscale numerical models do not have the spatial resolution to directly simulate the fluid dynamics and thermodynamics in and around urban structures, urban canopy parameterizations are sometimes used to approximate the drag, heating, and enhanced turbulent kinetic energy (tke) produced by the sub-grid scale urban elements. In this paper, we investigate the effect of the urban canopy parameterizations used in the HOTMAC mesoscale meteorological model by turning the parameterizations on and off. The model simulations were performed in the Paso del Norte region, which includes the cities of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, the Franklin and Sierra Juarez mountains, and the Rio Grande. The metropolitan area is surrounded by relatively barren scrubland and is intersected by strips of vegetation along the Rio Grande. Results indicate that the urban canopy parameterizations do affect the mesoscale flow field, reducing the magnitude of wind speed and changing the magnitude of the sensible heat flux and tke in the metropolitan area. A nighttime heat island and a daytime cool island exist when urban canopy parameters are turned on, but associated recirculation flows are not readily apparent. Model-computed solar, net, and longwave radiation values look reasonable, agreeing for the most part with published measurements.

Book excerpt: A modified urban canopy parameterization (UCP) is developed and evaluated in a three-dimensional mesoscale model to assess the urban impact on surface and lower atmospheric properties. This parameterization accounts for the effects of building drag, turbulent production, radiation balance, anthropogenic heating, and building rooftop heating/cooling. USGS land-use data are also utilized to derive urban infrastructure and urban surface properties needed for driving the UCP. An intensive observational period with clear-sky, strong ambient wind and drainage flow, and the absence of land-lake breeze over the Salt Lake Valley, occurring on 25-26 October 2000, is selected for this study. A series of sensitivity experiments are performed to gain understanding of the urban impact in the mesoscale model. Results indicate that within the selected urban environment, urban surface characteristics and anthropogenic heating play little role in the formation of the modeled nocturnal urban boundary layer. The rooftop effect appears to be the main contributor to this urban boundary layer. Sensitivity experiments also show that for this weak urban heat island case, the model horizontal grid resolution is important in simulating the elevated inversion layer. The root mean square errors of the predicted wind and temperature with respect to surface station measurements exhibit substantially larger discrepancies at the urban locations than the rural counterparts. However, the close agreement of modeled tracer concentration with observations fairly justifies the modeled urban impact on the wind direction shift and wind drag effects.

Book excerpt: Almost two-thirds of the U.S. population live in urbanized areas occupying less than 2% of the landmass. Similar statistics of urbanization exists in other parts of the world. With the rapid growth of the world population, urbanization appears to be an important issue on environmental and health aspects. As a result, the interaction between the urban region and atmospheric processes becomes a very complex problem. Further understanding of this interaction via the surface and/or atmosphere is of importance to improve the weather forecast, and to minimize the loss caused by the weather-related events, or even by the chemical-biological threat. To this end, Brown and Willaims, (1998) first developed an urban canopy scheme to parameterize the urban infrastructure effect. This parameterization accounts for the effects of drag, turbulent production, radiation balance, and anthropogenic and rooftop heating. Further modification was made and tested in our recent sensitivity study for an idealized case using a mesoscale model. Results indicated that the addition of the rooftop surface energy equation enables this parameterization to more realistically simulate the urban infrastructure impact (Chin et al., 2000). To further improve the representation of the urban effect in the mesoscale model, the USGS land-use data with different resolutions (200 and 30 meters) are adopted to derive the urban parameters via a look-up table approach (Leone et al., 2002; Chin et al., 2004). This approach can provide us the key parameters for urban infrastructure and urban surface characteristics to drive the urban canopy parameterization with geographic and temporal dependence. These urban characteristics include urban fraction, roof fraction, building height, anthropogenic heating, surface albedo, surface wetness, and surface roughness. The objective of this study is to evaluate the modified urban canopy parameterization (UCP) with the observed measurements. Another objective is to demonstrate the deficiency of using limited numbers of single-station meteorological measurements to validate the urban impact in the mesoscale models. The final objective of this study is to assess the value of tracer data in assessing the performance of UCP.

Book excerpt: Accurate predictions of air quality and atmospheric dispersion at high spatial resolution rely on high fidelity predictions of mesoscale meteorological fields that govern transport and turbulence in urban areas. However, mesoscale meteorological models do not have the spatial resolution to directly simulate the fluid dynamics and thermodynamics in and around buildings and other urban structures that have been shown to modify micro- and mesoscale flow fields (e.g., see review by Bornstein 1987). Mesoscale models therefore have been adapted using numerous approaches to incorporate urban effects into the simulations (e.g., see reviews by Brown 2000 and Bornstein and Craig 2002). One approach is to introduce urban canopy parameterizations to approximate the drag, turbulence production, heating, and radiation attenuation induced by sub-grid scale buildings and urban surface covers (Brown 2000). Preliminary results of mesoscale meteorological and air quality simulations for Houston (Dupont et al. 2004) demonstrated the importance of introducing urban canopy parameterizations to produce results with high spatial resolution that accentuates variability, highlights important differences, and identifies critical areas. Although urban canopy parameterizations may not be applicable to all meteorological and dispersion models, they have been successfully introduced and demonstrated in many of the current operational and research mode mesoscale models, e.g., COAMPS (Holt et al. 2002), HOTMAC (Brown and Williams 1998), MM5 (e.g., Otte and Lacser 2001; Lacser and Otte 2002; Dupont et al. 2004), and RAMS (Rozoff et al. 2003). The primary consequence of implementing an urban parameterization in a mesoscale meteorological model is the need to characterize the urban terrain in greater detail. In general, urban terrain characterization for mesoscale modeling may be described as the process of collecting datasets of urban surface cover physical properties (e.g., albedo, emissivity) and morphology (i.e., ground elevation, building and tree height and geometry characteristics) and then processing the data to compute physical cover and morphological parameters. Many of the surface cover and morphological parameters required for mesoscale meteorological models are also needed by atmospheric dispersion models. Thus, most of the discussion below is relevant to both types of modeling. In this paper, the term urban morphological analysis will be used to define the component of urban terrain characterization concerned with the morphological parameters. Furthermore, the focus will be building morphological parameters; therefore, the term urban morphological analysis will refer exclusively to the task of inventorying, computing or estimating building morphological parameters. Several approaches to perform urban morphological analysis exist; however, all have in common three types of practice issues related to the uncertainty of (1) data, (2) parameter definitions and calculation methods, and (3) extrapolation techniques. The objective of this paper is to describe the state-of-the-practice of urban morphological analysis by reviewing the primary approaches presented in the literature and outlining and commenting on key aspects of the three types of practice issues listed above.

COAMPS has been used at resolutions as small as 2 km to study the role of complex topography in generating mesoscale circulation (Doyle, 1997). The model has been adapted for use in the Atmospheric Science Division at LLNL for both research and operational use. The model is a fully, non-hydrostatic model with several options for turbulence parameterization, cloud processes and radiative transfer. We have recently modified the COAMPS code to include building and other urban surfaces effects in the mesoscale model by incorporating an urban canopy parameterization (UCP) (Chin et al., 2005). This UCP is a modification of the original parameterization of (Brown and Williams, 1998), based on Yamada's (1982) forest canopy parameterization and includes modification of the TKE and mean momentum equations, modification of radiative transfer, and an anthropogenic heat source. COAMPS is parallelized for both shared memory (OpenMP) and distributed memory (MPI) architecture.

Book excerpt: Numerical simulations tend to overestimate the near surface temperatures and wind speeds in urban areas. This is presumably due to an underestimation of surface latent heat fluxes in the absence of hydrological processes in the model. To test this hypothesis, a new single-layer urban canopy model (SLUCM) within the Weather and Research Forecasting (WRF) model is evaluated in Houston. Four simulations were conducted for 66 hours from August 24-26, 2000. The first two simulations used the default BULK urban scheme and the SLUCM, which did not include any hydrological processes. The last two simulations implemented different urban hydrological processes in the SLUCM. The accuracy of the SLUCM and BULK schemes was evaluated by comparing the model output with station observations. The results show that while the BULK and SLUCM configurations successfully capture the diurnal pattern of temperature and winds, the BULK scheme overestimates the near surface winds and temperatures in the urban regions during the day and night, and the new urban hydrological processes cause the model to under estimate these parameters. Overall, the BULK configuration is least accurate, and the SLUCM, with the new urban hydrological parameters set to off, is the most accurate urban configuration. An analysis of the surface sensible and latent heat fluxes at each station suggests that the error in the BULK scheme is due to a lack of moisture at the urban surface, while the error in the SLUCM is due to increases in the surface moisture at the urban surface. In addition to this, the analysis reveals that when the urban hydrological parameters are implemented in the SLUCM, the turbulent fluxes contribute more to the temperature changes then the radiative fluxes do. In contrast to this, when no hydrology parameters are used, the radiative fluxes contribute more to the temperature changes. These results suggest that the new SLUCM can potentially improve forecasts for near surface temperatures and winds over complex urban areas. An analysis of four different PBL schemes reveals that the nonlocal YSU scheme creates the least accurate simulations of the 2-meter temperature during the 24 hour period. Presumably, this error is occurring because the YSU temperature predictions are well below the observations during the nocturnal time period. The local PBL schemes produce more accurate simulations during August 25. This is occurring because local PBL schemes tend to perform best in stable atmospheric conditions, and the atmospheric profile on August 25 was largely stable, especially at nighttime. Of the local PBL schemes, the BouLac scheme consistently makes the most accurate temperature simulations within the urban land categories. The simulations which utilize the YSU scheme produce the most accurate simulations of the IO-meter wind speeds. This is attributed to a recent major fix in the YSU code, which allows the YSU scheme to produce more accurate PBLs during stable atmospheric conditions, especially at nighttime. An analysis of the surface radiative and turbulent flux budget reveals that the urban configurations are responsible for most of the changes in the near surface variables, while the PBL schemes play a secondary minor role in these changes.

Certain features of the geographic data, such as its resolution and accuracy, as well as the method of processing for use in the model, can be very important in producing accurate model simulations. The work described here is part of research effort into the relationship between these aspects of geographic data and the performance of mesoscale atmospheric models and is particularly focused on elevation data and how it is prepared for use in such models. A source for digital elevation data will typically not be at the resolution required for a given model simulation and so a resampling step is required. In addition, predictive non-linear model often cannot accept forcing at high spatial frequencies due to the terrain, thus smoothing is also required. The effect of different means of resampling and smoothing elevation data on two types of model simulations is investigated. At smaller spatial scales, nocturnal drainage winds in mountain valleys in Colorado are examined for effects on the general characteristics as well as the details of the flows. At the larger end of the mesoscale, extended simulations of California weather are examined for effects on orographic lifting, low-level convergence and divergence and ultimately rain and snow distribution.

This phenomena can produce health problems on the population, which is increasig, due to the decrease of the rural population. In order to improve the quality of living inside the cities, the understanding and characterization of the urban climate, by means of atmospheric modeling has become necessary. For this purpose, the so called urban canopy parameterizations have been developed, which represent, in an averaged way, the behaviour of the meteorological variables within the city. The objectives of this thesis are the improvement of the urban parameterization BEP (Building Effect Parameterization, Martilli et al. 2002) implemented in the WRF mesoscale model (Weather Research and Forecast model, Skamarock et al. 2008), and the optimization of the urban parameterization and the atmospheric model coupling, in order to increase its resolution without computational cost. In the first part of the thesis, microscale numerical models are used in order to extract the physiscs for the urban parameterization. From one side, a parameterization for the drag coefficient is proposed, defined in order to calculate the drag force on the wind speed produced by the buildings, by means of the distance between them, in the direction parallel and perpendicular to the flow, for aligned configurations. In addition, the parameterization of the length scales for turbulent transport and turbulence dissipation presented in Santiago and Martilli (2010) is extended. Both parameterizations are extracted for neutral thermal conditions. On the other side, parameterizations of the previous parameters are proposed, for unstable thermal conditions. In addition, the dispersive flux is studied and parameterized with the turbulent flux, by an extension of the Monin – Obukhov K- theory. In the second part of the thesis, a new technique to couple the mesoscale model and the urban parameterization is presented, which allows an increase of the resolution within the roughness sublayer, allowing a decrease of the vertical resolution of the atmospheric model, and thus, a decrease of the computational time.

Book excerpt: The book describes aspects of atmospheric particulate distribution and their deposition on urban canopy and the response of plants in terms of their tolerance and sensitivity in the stressed habitats like Kolkata city, India. Significant spatial and temporal variation of suspended particulates was observed along with elevated levels of trace metals in aerosols and canopy leaves. Source apportionment reflects vehicular exhausts, fossil fuel combustion, and composite industrial emissions as responsible for metallic elements. Species like Ficus religiosa, Ficus bengalensis, Polyalthia longifolia, Putranjiva roxburghii, Anthocephalas Cadamba are considered as good accumulator particulates as well as metallic contaminants. Most of these plants showed the considerable variation of their biochemical and physiological characteristics, indicating their response to stressed habitat. Reduced chlorophyll content, higher ascorbic acid content and higher catalase and peroxidase activities in these plants indicate the rise of their derivative metabolism. Moderate to high APTI-value in these species signifies their suitability as tolerant plants for greenbelt development in urban region.
