Book excerpt: A theory is described which can be used to predict accurately the skin friction drag of surfaces with uniform grain-type roughness. The roughness does not necessarily have to extend to the leading edge of the surface for an accurate calculation to be made. Uniform surface roughness composed of spherical beads does not affect the boundary layer in a manner significantly different from grain-type roughness, provided that the grains and the spheres are bonded to the surface in a similar manner. Consequently, the theory accurately predicts the effects of spherical roughness elements on skin friction under these conditions. The effect of a given type of roughness on turbulent boundary layer characteristics is strongly dependent upon the density of distribution of the roughness elements. The effect of maximum density V-grooves on turbulent boundary layer characteristics is dependent upon the sweepback angle. The effect of increasing sweepback is to reduce the skin friction drag. Book excerpt: Explorations in Automatic Thesaurus Discovery presents an automated method for creating a first-draft thesaurus from raw text. It describes natural processing steps of tokenization, surface syntactic analysis, and syntactic attribute extraction. From these attributes, word and term similarity is calculated and a thesaurus is created showing important common terms and their relation to each other, common verb--noun pairings, common expressions, and word family members. The techniques are tested on twenty different corpora ranging from baseball newsgroups, assassination archives, medical X-ray reports, abstracts on AIDS, to encyclopedia articles on animals, even on the text of the book itself. The corpora range from 40,000 to 6 million characters of text, and results are presented for each in the Appendix. The methods described in the book have undergone extensive evaluation. Their time and space complexity are shown to be modest. The results are shown to converge to a stable state as the corpus grows. The similarities calculated are compared to those produced by psychological testing. A method of evaluation using Artificial Synonyms is tested. Gold Standards evaluation show that techniques significantly outperform non-linguistic-based techniques for the most important words in corpora. Explorations in Automatic Thesaurus Discovery includes applications to the fields of information retrieval using established testbeds, existing thesaural enrichment, semantic analysis. Also included are applications showing how to create, implement, and test a first-draft thesaurus.

Book excerpt: A search of available literature indicates that the radiative properties of supersonic aircraft materials depend heavily upon the metal chosen for the aircraft skin and the degree of oxidation of the surface. A calculative study has been made to determine the effect of emittance upon wall temperature and skin friction over a range of supersonic and low hypersonic flight conditions. Calculations were made for Mach numbers up to 9, altitudes up to 80 000 feet, and vehicle lengths up to 200 feet. The results indicate that the skin-friction drag of a supersonic aircraft increases with increased surface emittance. Emittance increases with surface oxidation. Thus, for a new supersonic aircraft with skin made of a metal with low radiative properties in the polished, unoxidized state, the skin-friction drag will increase with time until the surface becomes stably oxidized. This effect of emittance on skin friction increases with Mach number and becomes substantial above Mach numbers of about 2.5. Hence, for specified flight conditions, the level of skin-friction drag at which the vehicle operates depends upon the m tal used for the skin of the aircraft and the degree of oxidation of the metal.

Book excerpt: An experimental program was conducted to investigate effects of roughness, and roughness superimposed on single and/or multiple, shallow, periodic waveforms, on turbulent boundary-layer skin friction and velocity profile, in compressible, adiabatic flow. Test conditions were Mach number = 2.9 and Reynolds number/ft = 2 million to 8 million. The planar models included smooth, sand-grain, machined and molded surface finishes. Direct measurements of surface shear and Pitot/recovery temperature profiles were obtained. (Modified author abstract).
