Book excerpt: This non-experimental quantitative study supported that the greater the employee perception and experience of transformational leadership behaviors, the higher the quality of leader-member exchange and affective commitment. Transformational leadership behaviors and leader-member exchange may predict affective commitment and affective commitment may be a predictor of intention to quit. The introduction of a moderator variable, age of the follower was not significantly related to the relationship between leader-member exchange and affective commitment. Age of the follower did moderate the relationships between idealized influence (attributed) and affective commitment. In post hoc analysis, this study demonstrated differences in commitment type by age category. Analysis of results using age as a moderator demonstrated that for 20 to 24 year olds, the leadership behaviors of IS are perceived differently, which may attenuate affective commitment and strengthen continuous commitment to the organization.

Book excerpt: The world of mergers and acquisitions are often fraught with change, loss of identity and uncertainty for the workers who remain. The consolidation of work-groups can result in new roles, unfamiliar faces, new social structure and the introduction of foreign processes. The need to quickly establish new social networks and social groups are essential to reestablish the individual's sense of belonging, comfort with the new organization and secure the future to support productivity. Leaders assigned the responsibility for executing work-group consolidations or the integration of business units to a new organization play a key role in support of employee adjustment. A successful leader will recognize the contribution that Transformational Leadership skills play to facilitate the re-socialization of the work-groups by leveraging Leader-Member Exchange and extolling a clear concise vision with which followers can identify. The following proposal establishes a mechanism to empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of Transformational Leadership and LMX in the post-M&A socialization of work groups.

Book excerpt: Leadership pervades every aspect of organizational and social life, and its study has never been more diverse, nor more fertile. With contributions from those who have defined that territory, this volume is not only a key point of reference for researchers, students and practitioners, but also an agenda-setting prospective and retrospective look at the state of leadership in the twenty-first century. It evaluates the domain and stretches it further by considering leadership scholarship from every angle, concluding with an optimistic look at the future of leaders, followers and their place in organizations and society at large. Each section represents a distinctive slant on leadership: - Macro perspectives - including strategic leadership, organization theory, charismatic leadership, complexity leadership, and networks. - Political and philosophical perspectives - including distributed leadership, critical leadership, ethics, the military and cults. - Psychological perspectives - including personality, leadership style and contingency theories, transformational leadership, exchange relationships, shared leadership, cognition, leadership development, gender, trust, identity and the ′dark side′ of leadership. - Cultural perspectives - including spirituality, aesthetics, and creativity. - Contemporary and emergent perspectives - followership, historical methods, virtual leadership, emotions, image, celebrity, and the quest for a general theory of leadership

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leader-member exchange (LMX) is the foremost dyadic theory in the leadership literature. Whereas contemporary leadership theories such as transformational, servant, or authentic leadership theories focus on the effects of leader behaviors on employee attitudes, motivation, and team outcomes, relational leadership theory views the dyadic relationship quality between leaders and members as the key to understanding leader effects on members, teams, and organizations. This approach views trust- and respect-based relationships as the cornerstone of leadership. LMX has grown from a new theory in the 1970s to a mature area of research in 2015. Interest in this theory has increased rapidly over the past four decades, and the pace of research in this area continues to accelerate dramatically. The Oxford Handbook of Leader-Member Exchange takes stock of the literature to examine its roots, what is currently known, what research gaps may exist, and what areas are in need of the most urgent research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the aging workforce from the employment relationship perspective. This innovative book specifically focuses on how organizations can ensure their aging workers remain motivated, productive and healthy. In 15 chapters, several experts on this topic describe how organizations through effective human resource management can ensure that workers are able to continue working at higher age. In addition, this book discusses the role older workers themselves play in continuing work at higher age. To do this, the authors integrate research from different areas, such as literature on leadership, psychological contracts and diversity with literature on the aging workforce. Through this integration this book provides innovative ways for organizations and workers to maintain productivity, motivation and health. Aging Workers and the Employee-Employer Relationship summarizes the latest research on how employment relationships change with age and its implications for supporting the well-being, motivation and productivity of older workers. It identifies ways to improve how both companies and workers solve the problems they face. These include better designed employment practices and more adaptive job content and developmental opportunities for aging workers along with activities aging workers can engage to enhance their own job crafting, learning and employability.
