Book excerpt: The interaction between a shock wave (attached to a wedge) and small amplitude, three-dimensional disturbances of a uniform, supersonic, freestream flow are investigated. The paper extends the two-dimensional study of Duck et al, through the use of vector potentials, which render the problem tractable by the same techniques as in the two-dimensional case, in particular by expansion of the solution by means of a Fourier-Bessel series, in appropriately chosen coordinates. Results are presented for specific classes of freestream disturbances, and the study shows conclusively that the shock is stable to all classes of disturbances (i.e. time periodic perturbations to the shock do not grow downstream), provided the flow downstream of the shock is supersonic (loosely corresponding to the weak shock solution). This is shown from our numerical results and also by asymptotic analysis of the Fourier-Bessel series, valid far downstream of the shock. Duck, Peter W. and Lasseigne, D. Glenn and Hussaini, M. Y. Book Synopsis Shock Wave-Boundary-Layer Interactions by : Holger Babinsky
Download or read book Shock Wave-Boundary-Layer Interactions written by Holger Babinsky and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

The conference is staged every two years and brings together physicists, mathematicians and engineers who review and share recent advances in mathematical and computational techniques for modeling fluid dynamics.
Book Synopsis A Nonlinear Theory for Predicting the Effects of Unsteady Laminar, Turbulent, Or Transitional Boundary Layers on the Attenuation of Shock Waves in a Shock Tube with Experimental Comparison by : Robert L. Trimpi
Download or read book A Nonlinear Theory for Predicting the Effects of Unsteady Laminar, Turbulent, Or Transitional Boundary Layers on the Attenuation of Shock Waves in a Shock Tube with Experimental Comparison written by Robert L. Trimpi and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The linearized attenuation theory of NACA Technical Note 3375 is modified in the following manner: (a) an unsteady compressible local skin-friction coefficient is employed rather than the equivalent steady-flow incompressible coefficient; (b) a nonlinear approach is used to permit application of the theory to large attenuations; and (c) transition effects are considered. Curves are presented for predicting attenuation for shock pressure ratios up to 20 and a range of shock-tube Reynolds numbers. Comparison of theory and experimental data for shock wave strengths between 1.5 and 10 over a wide range of Reynolds numbers shows good agreement with the nonlinear theory evaluated for a transition Reynolds nuniber of 2.5 million.

Stivers and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A region of slight compression, heretofore undescribed, was established within the local supersonic region on each of the airfoil sections near the leading edge in place of an expected expansion. This leading edge compression region was formed just downstream of the abrupt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most prolific applied mathematicians of the mid-twentieth century, Prof Lin is a highly respected professor at MIT. These volumes, a collection of Prof Lin's papers from 1943 to 1986, is an attempt to exhibit a historical perception of the development of ideas in the following areas of research:Stability of Parallel FlowsTurbulenceSpiral Structure of GalaxiesProf Lin has written short comments and personal recollections on the development of thinking in these subjects. In addition to research papers, there are two essays dealing with the basic thinking that underlies the development of applied mathematics as an academic discipline in USA. Other topics of interest are Aerodynamics, Liquid Helium, Solid State Physics, Plasticity and Magnetohydrodynamics. About 51 papers are included in these two volumes.
