Book excerpt: Changes in the crack growth behavior of 7075-T651 aluminum specimens which has been exposed to temperatures between 150 degrees and 355 degrees F (66 deg and 179 deg C) were evaluated. Specimens were fatigue tested at room temperature under flight-by-flight loading conditions. Results from these tests were then compared with data from the baseline (as received) material. Exposure to 250 deg F (121 deg C) or more produced a definite increase in speciment life, apparently due to a decrease in crack growth rates.

Book excerpt: This investigation was undertaken to clarify the role of microstructure on steady state (constant load amplitude) and transient (single periodic overload) fatigue crack growth behavior in 7XXX aluminum alloys at low stress intensity factor ranges (delta K). These results were consolidated with data in the literature to obtain an understanding of microstructural effects on crack growth response over a broad delta K range. Constant load amplitude data show that there are significant differences in near-threshold FCG resistance among 7XXX alloys. Overaging to a T7 temper reduces low delta K FCG resistance greatly, whereas intermediate and high delta K FCG resistance is increased by overaging. In the presence of moisture at intermediate delta K levels, increasing Cu content from 1.0 to 2.3% increases crack growth resistance. However, there is no consistent effect of Cu content on near-threshold fatigue performance. Similarly, no clear influence of dispersoid type (Cr vs. Zr) on low delta K FCG resistance was detected. Increasing alloy purity (lowering Fe, Si content) enhances crack growth resistance at high delta K, but has no effect at near-threshold stress intensities. The importance of near-threshold FCG performance to alloy design and materials selection for fatigue resistance is discussed. Potential tradeoffs between design philosophies which emphasize damage tolerance characteristics vs. those which focus on improved life cycle economics are examined.

Book excerpt: Methods to improve the high temperature, dwell crack growth resistance of Alloy 10, a high strength, nickel-base disk alloy, were studied. Two approaches, heat treat variations and composition modifications, were investigated. Under the heat treat approach, solution temperature, cooling rates, and stabilization, were studied. It was found that higher solution temperatures, which promote coarser grain sizes, coupled with a 1550 F stabilization treatment were found to significantly reduce dwell crack growth rates at 1300 F Changes in the niobium and tantalum content were found to have a much smaller impact on crack growth behavior. Lowering the niobium:tantalum ratio did improve crack growth resistance and this effect was most pronounced for coarse grain microstructures. Based on these findings, a coarse grain microstructure for Alloy 10 appears to be the best option for improving dwell crack growth resistance, especially in the rim of a disk where temperatures can reach or exceed 1300 T. Further, the use of advanced processing technologies, which can produce a coarse grain rim and fine grain bore, would be the preferred option for Alloy 10 to obtain the optimal balance between tensile, creep, and crack growth requirements for small gas turbine engines. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth rate behavior in CORONA 5, an alloy developed for applications requiring high fracture toughness, has been examined for eight material conditions. These conditions were designed to give differences in microstructure, strength level, and oxygen content, in such a manner that the separate effects of these variables could be defined. For all eight conditions, fatigue crack growth rates (da/dN) are virtually indistinquishable over the full all spectrum of stress-intensity range (Delta K) examined. Concomitantly, it is noted that over the sizeable solution annealing range studied, the primary alpha-phase morphology was substantially invariant. A change in microfractographic appearance occurs at delta KT, as extensive secondary cracking along Alpha/Beta interfaces is observed at all hypertransitional levels of Delta K, but not for Delta K

Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth behavior has been examined in a Ti-4.5Al-5Mo-1.5Cr alloy, for two different levels of beta-phase metastability. The resistance to fatigue crack growth appears to be marginally enhanced with the presence of metastable beta-phase in a microstructure also containing some primary alpha-phase (approx 30 pct) of high aspect ratio. This enhancement appears slightly greater for beta-phase water quenched from 899 deg C, than as more slowly cooled in helium from this same solution treatment temperature, at approximately an air-cooling rate. In the case of the former, nearly full retention of solute in the beta-phase is apparent, while in the latter, significant precipitation of secondary alpha-phase is evident in thin-foil transmission electron micrographs. Two heats were studied; differences in behavior between them suggest a heat-to-heat variability. Characterization of stress ratio (R=K{sub min}/K{sub max}) effects was also done at 538 C.

Book excerpt: Effects of microstructure and composition on resistance to fatigue crack growth were determined using constant amplitude loading conditions in low and high humidity air at test frequencies of 2 and 20 Hz. Strengthening precipitate had the largest effect at delta K above about 4 KSI sq. root of (in.), while solute composition had the largest effect at delta K below about 3 KSI sq. root of (in.). Large intermetallic particles affected growth at high and intermediate levels of delta K. (Author).

Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth (FCG) research conducted in the near threshold regime has identified a room temperature creep crack growth damage mechanism for a fine grain powder metallurgy (PM) aluminum alloy (8009). At very low DK, an abrupt acceleration in room temperature FCG rate occurs at high stress ratio (R = Kmin/Kmax). The near threshold accelerated FCG rates are exacerbated by increased levels of Kmax (Kmax less than 0.4 KIC). Detailed fractographic analysis correlates accelerated FCG with the formation of crack-tip process zone micro-void damage. Experimental results show that the near threshold and Kmax influenced accelerated crack growth is time and temperature dependent. Piascik, Robert S. and Newman, John A. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of the research on fatigue crack growth in aluminum alloys are described in three general areas. The first relates the influence of hold time at an underload that follows an overload on the fatigue crack growth retardation behavior of the 7075 and 2219 aluminum alloys. A very distinct effect on retardation with hold time is observed. The effect is microstructure dependent with the time dependence behavior extending over a longer period for the high strength materials. This well-defined time dependence clearly shows that lifetime predictions based on accelerated short hold time tests could be very non-conservative. The influence of humidity was also determined using vacuum as a reference environment. The second aspect of the research investigated the nature of the residual displacement, d, that leads to the crack closure phenomena. The last major emphasis was to investigate how gaseous environments interact with fatigue crack growth in aluminum alloys. Combined AES/SIMS studies were made of fracture surfaces taken from fatigue crack growth specimens fatigued in vacuum and subsequently exposed to and fatigued in a range of environments.
