Book excerpt: An analysis for the flutter boundary of a finite isotropic cylindrical shell under no static stress in a supersonic free stream is carried out at Mach numbers from 3-10. The effect of second order terms in the elastic equilibrium equation, which was not considered by Li (1967), is examined in detail. The aerodynamic load is computed following the same approximation usedby Li (1967), and the elastic displacement of the shell is resolved into a linear combination of sine functions to satisfy the clamped boundary condition at one end and simply supported conditions at the other end. This homogeneous system is solved by Galerkin's method. Then the resultant matrix is transformed into a convenient form, having the same characteristic equation, and expressed in triangular form by means of QR-transformations. The required eigenvalues are the diagonal elements of the transformed matrix. The flutter boundary is defined as the curve where the imaginary part of the eigenvalue becomes negative. It is found that the effect of the second order terms is small. (Author).

Book excerpt: The flutter boundary of a thin cylindrical shell of finite length is determined with the aerodynamic load obtained by linearized potential theory. A low frequency approximation is applied, together with some other plausible approximation, to circumvent the difficulty in evaluating a complicated convolution integral containing Bessel functions. Galerkin's method is then used to set up an eigenvalue problem equivalent to the resulting integro-differential equation. The flutter boundary, for given Mach number and circumferential mode n, corresponds to the shell thickness ratio at which the real part of any one of the eigenvalue first become non-negative. Some interesting conclusions can be drawn, at least qualitatively, through Hadamard's well known theorem on the regularity of a matrix. In particular, it is found that the most feasible circumferential mode of vibration occurs around n=7. (Author).

The expression is valid at high values of Mach number and is based on the quasisteady approximation when only first order terms in vibration frequency are considered. The kernel functions arising in the expression for the pressure coefficient are tabulated and shown graphically for a series of circumferential modes. It is anticipated that the revised expression will be simpler to use than the earlier expression when introduced into the full panel flutter equations. (Author).

Book excerpt: Thjs bibliography had its inception in 1967, when the compilers first attempted a comprehensive cov erage of the finite element literature using both manual and computer-based retrieval. Initially, the data base was stored on a card index, but this was subsequently transferred to punched cards and magnetic tape. Computer processing was adopted at an early stage to derive the three index formats from the data base. Over the subsequent years, several versions of the bibliography were produced, with two of these being made available in a report form to other researchers. From the widespread interest in these documents, it became evident that there was a need for a commercially-available comprehensive bibliography in this area. A major effort was undertaken to revise, update, and extend the data base, resulting in this present volume. The bibliography covers the period 1956-1975 primarily, although some earlier publications of histori cal interest are included. The citations are not restricted to the English language and documents are listed in many languages and from diverse places of origin. All publication formats were accepted, so that references will be found to books, monographs, journal papers and articles, theses, dissertations, reports, surveys, and the like.
