Book Synopsis Common Bean Improvement in the Twenty-First Century by : S.P. Singh
Download or read book Common Bean Improvement in the Twenty-First Century written by S.P. Singh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. ) is the most important pulse crop in the world. It is an important source of calories, proteins, dietary fibers, minerals, and vitamins for millions of people in both developing and developed countries worldwide. It complements cereals and other carbohydrate-rich foods in providing near-perfect nutrition to people of all ages. Moreover, a regular intake ofbeans helps lower cholesterol and cancer risks. Despite the fact that per capita consumption of common bean in some developed countries (e. g. , the U. S. A. ) has been increasing over the last several years, in general, the average global per capita consumption is declining because production is unable to keep up with the population growth. Moreover, increasing demand for pesticide-free food products, concern for natural resources conservation, and the need to reduce production costs offer daunting challenges to the twenty-first century policy makers, bean growers, and researchers alike. High yielding, high quality bean cultivars that require less water, fertilizers, pesticides, and manual labor combined with integrated management of abiotic and biotic stresses will have to be developed. Eminent bean researchers were invited to contemplate these issues, prepare a state-of-the-art account on most relevant topics, and offer their insight into research directions into the twenty-first century. Four excellent books have been published covering various aspects ofthe common bean since 1980. These books are: I) Bean Production Problems nd in the Tropics (l SI ed. 1980, 2 ed. 1989), H. F. Schwartz & M. A.

This book was released on 1975 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study has been intended to contribute to the identification of characteristics and factors that determine the yielding capacity of dry bean plants. The major objective is to gather information to describe a high yielding genotype that can be bred to make a highly efficient utilization of production resources. Concepts of plant physiology, plant architecture, and agronomic practices have been combined to develop certain hypotheses and evaluate them.

Book Synopsis Nutrients for Sugar Beet Production by : Arthur Philip Draycott
Download or read book Nutrients for Sugar Beet Production written by Arthur Philip Draycott and published by CABI. This book was released on 2003 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a summary of world sugar production from beets, the authors cover the plant's need of each macro and micronutrient and effects on growth, yield and crop quality. The soil's supply of nutrients is examined as the basis for use of mineral fertilizers, organic manures and foliar applications. The book provides an up-to-date review of relevant research and the authors draw out practical guidelines so that all concerned with growing the crop can make use of this latest information. The book is destined to become the standard reference on the subject for many years to come. It represents the only significant work in English since Dr. Draycott's earlier title on the same subject, published 30 years ago.

Under Temperate and Tropical Conditions written by Hans Christian Wien and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To determine the yield response of dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris, grown for its dry seed) to changes in plant spacing, a series of three spacing experiments were conducted, the first under the temperate conditions at Aurora, New York, and the other two at the College of Agriculture of the University of the Philippines in the tropical lowlands at Los Banos.
