Widely thought to be a helpful mechanism for integrating past and future, the process of life review needs better specification and evaluation based on sound research. ""The Meaning of Reminiscence and Life Review"" brings together both research and application pieces covering the range of possibilities. It examines important controversies and asks: ""Does it work?"" and ""What is the evidence?"" Given their own voice, what do old people say about looking back?

Download or read book Reminiscence Therapeutic Intervention written by Naglaa Mostafa and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aging is associated with poor mental health in some older people especially the institutionalized elderly; where low levels of life satisfaction and self-esteem are major problems. The study results indicate that depression amongst elderly people in the institutions is due to loss of independence, inability to continue previous occupation, feeling of isolation and loneliness, lack of privacy and meaningful occupation. In addition, this book demonstrates that reminiscence program significantly improves self-esteem, lessens the feeling of loneliness, and promotes life satisfaction among elderly. Although reminiscence program did not significantly reduce the level of depression, improvement was noted after reminiscence program in reducing level of depression post intervention when compared to pre intervention. Participants enjoyed participations in the program, they felt well and developed closer relationships with each other. The researcher concludes that reminiscence is an effective intervention with minimal harmful side effects which can help elderly people adapt to the aging process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " Background: Depression among the elderly has risen in severity and frequency. With a majority of people above the ages of 55 years suffering from depression. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the total number of people suffering from depression exceeded 300 million in 2015 worldwide. Depression is a significant public health problem among older adults; the condition is prevalent and a leading cause of health disability and death. Nursing homes represented 48% of all reported depression cases in 2011 and 2012 in the U.S. Methods: The evidenced-based practice project involved 20 adults above 55 years subject to reminiscence therapy (RT). The therapy was implemented by sharing memories, listening, or watching movies. The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and The Satisfaction with Life Scale (LWS) were used to test depression before and after the implementation. Initially, the GDS showed mild depression 8, moderate depression 9, and severe depression 3, while LWS showed neutral 6, extremely dissatisfied with life 14, and extremely satisfied 0. After the project, GDS scores were 14 for mild depression, 4 for moderate depression, and 2 for severe depression. LWS scores were 12 for neutral, 6 for extremely dissatisfied with life, and 2 for extremely satisfied. Findings: RT was effective in decreasing perceptions of depression and improving perceptions of life satisfaction. Implication: RT is an effective way to treat depression, improve life satisfaction, and improve healthcare outcomes among older adults in long-term care settings. Keywords: Reminiscence therapy, depression, mental health, long-term care, evidence-based practice, Leininger's transcultural theory " -- Abstract
