Book Synopsis Agriculture and Energy by : William Lockeretz
Download or read book Agriculture and Energy written by William Lockeretz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 783 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture and Energy consists of the proceedings of a conference held at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, on June 17-19, 1976. The conference aims to bring together a broad spectrum of researchers concerned with obtaining a better understanding of the energy consumption by agriculture. These researchers are also concerned with developing ways to help food production adapt to occurring and anticipated resource availability problems. This book is organized into nine parts, separating the papers of the conference as chapters. It describes the quantity of energy consumed in particular production processes or in production at various levels of aggregation in the field of agriculture. It also dwells into the economic impacts of energy problems on agricultural production. It looks into the comparative economic and energy costs of the various methods for producing a specific product. Furthermore, this reference material discusses unconventional production methods that can reduce the need for fossil energy inputs by using renewable energy sources or recycling materials. Lastly, the implications of the energy situation for agricultural policy, both in the U.S. and in developing countries, are shown.

Download or read book 2012 Global Food Policy Report written by International Food Policy Research Institute and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2013 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2012 Global Food Policy Report is the second in an annual series that provides an in-depth look at major food policy developments and events. Initiated in response to resurgent interest in food security, the series offers a yearly overview of the food policy developments that have contributed to or hindered progress in food and nutrition security. It reviews what happened in food policy and why, examines key challenges and opportunities, shares new evidence and knowledge, and highlights emerging issues. In 2012, world food security remained vulnerable. While talk about hunger and malnutrition was plentiful, it remains to be seen whether current and past commitments to invest in agriculture, food security, and nutrition will be met. New data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations suggest that the world will fall short of achieving the first Millennium Development Goal of halving the prevalence of undernutrition by 2015. Translating commitments into action is thus even more urgent.
Book Synopsis A Nexus Approach for Sustainable Development by : Stephan Hülsmann
Download or read book A Nexus Approach for Sustainable Development written by Stephan Hülsmann and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how integrated management of environmental resources via a nexus approach can help in achieving the respective Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It provides conceptual considerations but mainly practical examples on how to implement a nexus approach in cities and multifunctional land-use systems to increase resource use efficiency and develop a low carbon economy. After sketching out the background and conceptual outline, contributions to the book explore key aspects of the nexus implementation. Specifically, they • Demonstrate how to sustainably use organic waste and wastewater for agriculture, • Explore examples on how to manage multifunctional land-use systems including multipurpose reservoirs, • Highlight the importance of economic incentives for successful nexus implementation, and • Provide a comprehensive perspective on challenges and opportunities of implementation, considering peer-to-peer learning, indigenous knowledge, and stakeholder participation. The chapters in this book shed a new light on key aspects of the interrelation between SDGs and the nexus approach in resilient cities and multifunctional land-use systems, and provide specific examples on how to advance sustainable resources management.
Book Synopsis Agricultural Productivity and Producer Behavior by : Wolfram Schlenker
Download or read book Agricultural Productivity and Producer Behavior written by Wolfram Schlenker and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural yields have increased steadily in the last half century, particularly since the Green Revolution. At the same time, inflation-adjusted agricultural commodity prices have been trending downward as increases in supply outpace the growth of demand. Recent severe weather events, biofuel mandates, and a switch toward a more meat-heavy diet in emerging economies have nevertheless boosted commodity prices. Whether this is a temporary jump or the beginning of a longer-term trend is an open question. Agricultural Productivity and Producer Behavior examines the factors contributing to the remarkably steady increase in global yields and assesses whether yield growth can continue. This research also considers whether agricultural productivity growth has been, and will be, associated with significant environmental externalities. Among the topics studied are genetically modified crops; changing climatic factors; farm production responses to government regulations including crop insurance, transport subsidies, and electricity subsidies for groundwater extraction; and the role of specific farm practices such as crop diversification, disease management, and water-saving methods. This research provides new evidence that technological as well as policy choices influence agricultural productivity.
