Book excerpt: Reading problems can have an extremely adverse effect on a person's quality of life, opportunities in education and employment, and access to enjoyable activities (Daly, Chafouleas, & Skinner, 2005). Unfortunately, almost 20% of students in the United States have significant difficulty learning to read (Good, Simmons, & Smith, 1998). Federal legislation drafted in an attempt to address this important issue (No Child Left Behind Act of 2002, Reauthorization of Individuals with Disabilities Act 2004) propose initiatives that are unclear to teachers and practitioners in terms of how to best instruct students to become successful readers. For older students, and students identified with emotional disturbance, research in this area is considerably lacking. Many students with emotional disturbance have poor reading skills which follow them into the later grades and adulthood. This cycle of poor reading and difficult classroom behaviors often spirals out of control, with each variable negatively and reciprocally impacting the other. The purpose of the present study was to investigate of the impact of a two-pronged reading intervention package on specific reading skill acquisition and levels of on-task classroom behavior exhibited by students in an alternative school setting. The interventions used individualized direct instructional techniques with students who were placed in an alternative educational setting as a result of behavioral symptomatology that was considered to be unmanageable in their home school districts. The two interventions focused on improving reading skills through the development of phonemic awareness/basic phonics skills, and repeated readings with error feedback to improve levels of reading fluency. Additionally, the impact of the intervention was also examined in relation to student classroom behaviors believed to be connected to their frustration with the reading process. Two single-subject multiple baseline across subjects research designs were used to assess the effectiveness of the interventions on reading skill development and on-task behavior, and the order of the interventions was reversed for the second experimental condition in order to address the possibility of order effects. Five upper-elementary and middle school level students completed participation in the study. Results indicated noticeable gains across all students in the area of phonemic segmentation. Assessment results in the areas of word reading, phonetic encoding, and reading fluency showed variable results and flat trend lines, indicating nominal growth in these areas. Additionally, behavioral observation data indicated few patterns of positive behavioral change having resulted from intervention participation. Analysis of study design indicated that the interventions as implemented might have been too short to produce meaningful gains for these students who had long-established patterns of reading difficulty. Generalization of gains made in segmentation to the overall reading process would likely require greater frequency of intervention with more opportunities for repetition and practice. The results of this study indicate that further research is needed in the area of designing reading interventions for students with identified emotional disturbance who are attending an alternative school setting, both to improve their ability to read and to potentially improve their behavior by providing for more opportunities for success with reading tasks.

This study analyzed extant student summative reading assessment data and extant teacher observation data. The study also administered the Self-Regulation Questionnaire-Reading Motivation to measure the reading motivation of students who had received Balanced Literacy Reading Instruction in the district from first grade through fifth grade. The study sought to determine the amount of reading time administered during reading instruction during the implementation, the current level of student reading motivation, and the longitudinal growth of student reading competence. The study used the CIPP model of program evaluation for data collection on the context, input, process, and products of implementation and student results of the Balanced Literacy Reading Instruction. The findings of the study indicate that the Balanced Literacy approach is not being implemented with fidelity based on the disparity of student reading time between teachers. Based on survey results, the current level of student motivation to read varies significantly between students and does not reflect trends in motivation research. The students have not experienced significant growth in reading competence during implementation. Recommendations for future research and continuous program improvement include providing consistent and continuous professional development on Balanced Literacy, collecting baseline data on student motivation to measure growth, and analyzing the effect of Balanced Literacy Reading Instruction on student populations more aligned to the district's student population.

This study contributes to the current body of research on the effects of social-emotional learning on achievement. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact, if any, 1-2-3 Wellness as a universal Tier 1 Strategy has on reading achievement, behavior, and attendance. The study also examined teachers' perceptions of the efficacy of 1-2-3 Wellness for addressing students' social-emotional and academic needs in the classroom. The study occurred in a suburban elementary school and included participatns in Grades one and two. The results of the study show that there was no statistically significant difference between 1-2-3 Wellness pre- and post-students reading assessments or student behavior referral data. The study did show a statistically significant difference between pre-intervention and post-intervention student average daily attendance. Teachers' perceptions of the 1-2-3 Wellness program were also analyzed using an eight-question survey. The study found that teachers expected to see correlations in behavior data and post-1-2-3 Wellness implementation; however, the data did not show a correlation. The recommendations for future study include investigating 1-2-3 Wellness with older students and other measures of student learning and growth, including student perception data.

This study extends the extant research by examining treatment adherence and quality and the extent to which these components of treatment fidelity relate to posttest performance for eighth grade students who received a content-area reading treatment targeting improved content knowledge and reading comprehension. Data were analyzed to address the following questions: (1) Do treatment adherence and quality indicate a general factor of fidelity? (2) Do treatment adherence and quality predict greater performance in content acquisition and reading comprehension? (3) To what extent are the effects of treatment adherence and quality on student outcomes moderated by teacher's classroom management performance and student characteristics (pretest reading performance level, limited English proficiency status, special education status, and gender)? Situated within a larger randomized controlled trial examining the effects of a content-area instructional program, this study used data from the subsample of students (n = 790) in classes randomly assigned to treatment. Results showed a general factor of fidelity did not sufficiently predict treatment adherence and quality. Treatment adherence and quality were significant, positive predictors of content knowledge performance, which indicates that increases in both dimensions of treatment fidelity were associated with improvements in content knowledge posttest performance. However, a significant interaction between treatment adherence and quality was present. Interaction plots revealed instructional quality led to greater levels of posttest performance for students in classrooms with high levels of instructional adherence; however, instructional quality was not strongly associated with posttest performance when instruction was implemented with low adherence. Results also showed instructional quality was a significant, positive predictor of performance on the ASK Reading Comprehension subtest. Moderator analyses revealed teachers' classroom management and students' pretest performance influenced the effects of treatment adherence and quality on student outcomes. These findings help to elucidate the conditions under which the PACT instructional treatment leads to improved outcomes and, more broadly, underscores the importance of examining dimensions of treatment fidelity and the interplay between treatment fidelity dimensions and other teacher- and student-level characteristics when interpreting treatment effects.

The student displayed some improvements to his classroom behavior as a result of this intervention.
