Book excerpt: Vibration problems dealing with advanced Mathematical and Numerical Techniques have extensive application in a wide class of problems in ae- nautics, aerodynamics, space science and technology, off-shore engineering and in the design of different structural components of high speed space crafts and nuclear reactors. Different classes of vibration problems dealing with complex geometries and non-linear behaviour require careful attention of scientists and engineers in pursuit of their research activities. Almost all fields of Engineering, Science and Technology, ranging from small domestic building subjected to earthquake and cyclone to the space craft venturing towards different planets, from giant ship to human skeleton, encounter problems of vibration and dynamic loading. This being truly an interdisciplinary field, where the mathematicians, phy- cists and engineers could interface their innovative ideas and creative thoughts to arrive at an appropriate solution, Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur, India, a premier institution for education and research in engineering, science and technology felt it appropriate to organize 8th International C- ference on “Vibration Problems (ICOVP-2007)” as a part of its sesquicentenary celebration. The conference created a platform and all aspects of vibration phenomenon with the focus on the state-of-the art in theoretical, experimental and applied research areas were addressed and the scientific interaction, p- ticipated by a large gathering including eminent personalities and young research workers, generated many research areas and innovative ideas.

Book excerpt: The work described here represents an attempt to understand the mechanisms of energy transfer from steel H-piles driven with diesel hammers to the surrounding soil and the energy attenuation through the soil by measuring ground motion vibrations in the near vicinity of the pile. Attenuation rates of vibration decay with radial distance from the driven pile were calculated. A spreadsheet tool was developed to estimate distances from the pile at which the threshold settlement vibrations may be exceeded.

Book excerpt: When a pile is driven into clay, horizontal and vertical movements are developed in the soil surrounding the pile. These movements will tend to develop axial forces and bending moments in adjacent piles that have already been installed. Possible consequences for these piles are (i) structural damage or cracking (of concrete piles) arising from the induced bending moments, (ii) tensile failure of the piles due to the induced axial forces, and (iii) lifting-off of the pile tip from the bearing stratum due to the axial induced movements. This paper describes the results of a theoretical analysis of the bending moments and axial forces developed in a pile due to driving of an adjacent pile in clay. The analysis uses approximate distributions of horizontal and vertical soil movements caused by pile driving, developed from a strain-path' analysis, together with inferences from model pile test data. An examination is made of various factors that may influence the induced bending moments and forces, including pile spacing, depth of penetration of the adjacent pile, and number of piles driven. For a number of published case histories comparisons are made between theoretical and measured axial and lateral pile movements. In general, satisfactory agreement are made between theoretical and measured axial and lateral pile movements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Engineering geology' is one of those terms that invite definition. The American Geological Institute, for example, has expanded the term to mean 'the application of the geological sciences to engineering practice for the purpose of assuring that the geological factors affecting the location, design, construction, operation and mainten ance of engineering works are recognized and adequately provided for'. It has also been defined by W. R. Judd in the McGraw-Hill Encyclopaedia of Science and Technology as 'the application of education and experience in geology and other geosciences to solve geological problems posed by civil engineering structures'. Judd goes on to specify those branches of the geological or geo-sciences as surface (or surficial) geology, structural/fabric geology, geohydro logy, geophysics, soil and rock mechanics. Soil mechanics is firmly included as a geological science in spite of the perhaps rather unfortunate trends over the years (now happily being reversed) towards purely mechanistic analyses which may well provide acceptable solutions for only the simplest geology. Many subjects evolve through their subject areas from an interdisciplinary background and it is just such instances that pose the greatest difficulties of definition. Since the form of educational development experienced by the practitioners of the subject ulti mately bears quite strongly upon the corporate concept of the term 'engineering geology', it is useful briefly to consider that educational background.
