Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of music therapy on patient anxiety and perception during radiation oncology procedures. The design of this study included experimental and control groups with pre-test and multiple post-test data collection. Groups were randomly assigned to experimental (music) and control (standard treatment) groups and included patients with head/neck, abdomen and breast treatment area (N = 26). The dependent variables included a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) anxiety measure, items from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare and Provider Services/Picket and the facility Music Therapy satisfaction questionnaires. Results of a Two-Way Analysis of Variance with repeated measures revealed significantly lower post-test procedural anxiety between the experimental and control group across procedures after the simulation, the first treatment and the fifth. Patients' overall rating of the experience during each visit was significantly different between groups and across conditions. Overall, music therapy decreased anxiety, especially at the time of the first treatment.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the effects of music therapy on pain, anxiety and present and future psychosocial perceptions of cardiac patients. Forty-eight men and women admitted to cardiac progressive care unit of a local regional medical center served as subjects for the study. Subjects were assigned to one of three groups. Sixteen subjects received relaxation and imagery paired with live music, sixteen subjects received literature, and sixteen subjects received no intervention. Pre- and Post intervention data included pain medication intake and a self-report questionnaire concerning pain, anxiety, and present and future psychosocial perceptions. Patients in the music group were given a relaxation tape, which involved relaxation exercises and imagery, paired with music. Patients were called one week after discharge and given the questionnaire once more. Patients were also asked about their pain medication intake. Results from the study were collected and analyzed. The results revealed the music group scored significantly lower on the pre posttest questionnaire involving pain, anxiety and present and future perceptions. A difference was found in the groups' pre/post medication intake but results were not significant. The analysis found that the music group had significantly lower scores on the questionnaire one-week post discharge. The music group also had a significantly lower level of pain medication one-week post discharge. It was concluded that music therapy interventions are beneficial to subjects in a post-operative setting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cancer is a life-threatening illness that has the potential to impact a patient's life in a myriad of ways. The positive effects of music therapy have been acknowledged by its role and impact during the treatment within comprehensive cancer centers in the United States (Richardson, Babiak-Vazquez, & Frenkel, 2017). Existing studies support the efficacy of music therapy treatment in cancer care, focusing primarily on the following goals: to reduce stress, anxiety, and perception of pain (Magill, 2001). According to the Cochrane review, music interventions that conducted by a well-trained music therapist might have benefits for cancer patients on helping them with anxiety, pain, fatigue and other needs (Bradt, Dileo, Magill & Teague, 2016). Further research indicates that an additional focus on the patient's spiritual journey and expression of his or her process is significant, and vital to the overall therapeutic process (Castelli, Castelnuovo, & Torta, 2015). The clinical application of songwriting has been shown to not only support a patient's emotional and spiritual wellbeing, but also encourage an increased sense of self, self-esteem and decision-making (Baker & Wigram, 2005). The present study examines the implementation of songwriting with two patients with cancer in an outpatient medical facility. The analysis details each patient's experience of songwriting while also taking into account the patients' personalities, education levels, cultural backgrounds, and familial histories. Furthermore, an exploration of the author's perspective and clinical experience as it pertains to this population is included."--Page 5.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the quality of life and anxiety/depression level of cancer patients and their families within a hospital setting. Any patient admitted to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare that met the criteria for this study as determined by the medical personnel, was considered as a potential subject. The music therapy sessions consisted of a song written about the patient and family, live preferred music and counseling to help the patient and family. The experimental and control groups were randomly assigned. The experimental group (N=40), recieved two sessions of music therapy. The first music therapy session was used to gather information that the patient and family wanted to use in the song and also to assess the level of coping. The second music therapy session consisted of giving the patient a copy of the song, and a live performance of the song. The patient and one family member then provided self-report data on the Anxiety/Depression questionnaire, and the Hospice Quality of Life Index questionnaire. One week later, the patient was contacted and asked to fill out the same questionnaires as before and a Songwriting Quesionnaire. The control group (N=40), received one music therapy session consisting of preferred live music and counseling for the patient and family. At the end of each session, the patient and family member completed the Anxiety/Depression questionnaire and the Hospice Quality of Life questionnaire. One week later, the patient was contacted again to complete the same questionnaires as before. The patient Hospice Quality of Life questionnaire showed significantly higher scores for the experimental one-week post session group than the control one-week post session group. The Songwriting Questionnaire filled out only by the experimental subjects, showed a high mean score of 8.5 on a 10 point scale for coping skills.

Book excerpt: Cancer patients have multiple factors that contribute to anxiety; for instance, chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Analysis from multiple studies indicates music therapy is a beneficial intervention in reducing anxiety induced from cancer treatments. Music has no side effects; it is economical, easy, and proven effectiveness in relieving anxiety to cancer patients receiving treatments. Music was offered to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, port placement, mastectomy, and wound dressing changes. Patients were allowed to listen to music of their choice, on a MP3 that was provided, for 20-30 minutes prior to treatment and some patients were offered to listen to music during treatment as well. Results showed that music therapy had significantly reduced anxiety in cancer patients.
