Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming an effective strength and conditioning practitioner requires the development of a professional skills set and a thorough understanding of the scientific basis of best practice. Aimed at advanced students and novice-to-expert practitioners, in this book the authors explore the latest scientific evidence and apply it to exercise selection and programming choices across the full range of areas in strength and conditioning, from strength and power, speed and agility, to aerobic conditioning. Since the first edition of this text was written extensive research has expanded the supporting evidence base that provides the theoretical foundation for each chapter. In addition, some areas that were previously under-researched have now been expanded and some key concepts have been further challenged. Each chapter is written by experts with experience in a wide variety of sports, including both applied and research experience, ensuring this concise but sophisticated textbook is the perfect bridge from introductory study to effective professional practice. While advanced concepts are explored within the book, the coach must not forget that consistency in the application of the basic principles of strength and conditioning is the foundation of athletic development. Advanced Strength and Conditioning: An Evidence- based Approach is a valuable resource for all advanced students and practitioners of strength and conditioning and fitness training.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tychomancy—meaning “the divination of chances”—presents a set of rules for inferring the physical probabilities of outcomes from the causal or dynamic properties of the systems that produce them. Probabilities revealed by the rules are wide-ranging: they include the probability of getting a 5 on a die roll, the probability distributions found in statistical physics, and the probabilities that underlie many prima facie judgments about fitness in evolutionary biology. Michael Strevens makes three claims about the rules. First, they are reliable. Second, they are known, though not fully consciously, to all human beings: they constitute a key part of the physical intuition that allows us to navigate around the world safely in the absence of formal scientific knowledge. Third, they have played a crucial but unrecognized role in several major scientific innovations. A large part of Tychomancy is devoted to this historical role for probability inference rules. Strevens first analyzes James Clerk Maxwell’s extraordinary, apparently a priori, deduction of the molecular velocity distribution in gases, which launched statistical physics. Maxwell did not derive his distribution from logic alone, Strevens proposes, but rather from probabilistic knowledge common to all human beings, even infants as young as six months old. Strevens then turns to Darwin’s theory of natural selection, the statistics of measurement, and the creation of models of complex systems, contending in each case that these elements of science could not have emerged when or how they did without the ability to “eyeball” the values of physical probabilities.

Book excerpt: This book addresses the need in the field for a comprehensive review of motion planning algorithms and hybrid control methodologies for complex legged robots. Introducing a multidisciplinary systems engineering approach for tackling many challenges posed by legged locomotion, the book provides engineering detail including hybrid models for planar and 3D legged robots, as well as hybrid control schemes for asymptotically stabilizing periodic orbits in these closed-loop systems. Complete with downloadable MATLAB code of the control algorithms and schemes used in the book, this book is an invaluable guide to the latest developments and future trends in dynamical legged locomotion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph contains an overview of classical dynamics, providing a solid basis on which to build an understanding of the theory of interplanetary flights. The treatment of the topic is based on both historical and topical perspectives. The theoretical development is illustrated with a number of practical examples, bringing to bear the author's experience gained from working on the Soviet space programme. Many examples are taken from current space missions - new data is included on the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet, the flight of ULYSSES over the Solar poles and the Voyager's tour of the solar system.
