Book excerpt: Loading by constant deflection reversed bending was applied to Lehigh cantilever fatigue specimens of a plain carbon steel, A-516, and three low-alloy steels, A-302, A-387B, and HY-80. Fatigue life over the 5000 to 100,000 cycle range was investigated at a loading frequency of 200 cpm. The effect of microstructure was observed by comparing the fatigue resistance of specimens of equal tensile strength but different heat treatment histories. Normalized structures proved to be superior to the corresponding spray quenched and tempered conditions when using total strain range as the test parameter. Where similar structures were compared, the 100,000 cycle fatigue life was found to be related to tensile strength. The fatigue resistance of the low-alloy steels was influenced markedly by heat treatment while the plain carbon steel essentially was unaffected. Increased alloy content altered the slope of the fatigue curve such that the plain carbon steel tends to be superior in the 5000 cycle range, while the low-alloy steels excel above the 20,000 cycle region. This results in a grouping of the curves as to steel composition.

The cleavage fracture toughness of low-alloy steels depends upon three metallurgical parameters: the microscopic cleavage strength, the yield strength, and the effective root radius. Variations in fracture toughness with microstructure can be explained through the effect of the microstructure on these parameters. The major objective of this investigation has been the study of the effect of microstructural variables on these parameters, and hence the effect of microstructure on fracture toughness. The theoretical model for the cleavage fracture toughness of the low-alloy steels can be successfully applied provided the assumptions are not strongly violated. This requires low microscopic cleavage strength/yield strength ratio values and low work-hardening rates. Lower temperatures and higher strain rates both favor these conditions. Book excerpt: The microstructural variability existing in weld heat-affected zones (HAZ) of SA533 Grade B steel has a strong influence on the fatigue crack growth rate of the material in a simulated nuclear reactor environment. In particular, considerably high susceptibility to environmentally enhanced cracking has been noted in the coarse grains of tempered martensite. This phenomenon is considered to be important not only in connection with predicting the cracking of the weld HAZ structures but also in elucidating the mechanism of crack growth enhancement in the high-temperature water environment. The materials used in the study are primarily SA533 Grade B and several other low-alloy steels including SA387, SA542, SA543, JIS SPV 46Q, and AISI 4340. Different heat treatments were given to these alloys to obtain a variety of microstructures and strengths. The results obtained show a general tendency for the crack growth rates of higher-strength materials to be more substantially accelerated in the simulated boiling-water reactor (BWR) water environment as the stress ratio is shifted from 0.1 to 0.5. In order to explore the operation of the cracking mechanism under dynamic loading, slow strain rate tests (SSRTs) were also performed. As with the cyclic crack growth rate tests, the materials with higher yield strengths exhibited highly enhanced crack growth rates and showed Ji values much reduced compared with those obtained in 288°C air. Furthermore, the crack growth rates under cyclic loading are directly compared with those obtained by the SSRT technique in terms of time-based crack growth rate in the water environment and in air by using plots of (da/dt)E versus (da/dt)air where (da/dt)E is the time-based crack growth rate in an aggressive environment and (da/dt)air is the rate in air. A satisfactory correspondence can be obtained between corrosion-fatigue test crack growth rates and those obtained by SSRTs.

In addition, the effects of under- and over-aging on fatigue properties are also studied. The microstructural segregation in the maraging steel showed no detrimental effect on the smooth or notched fatigue properties even though the ductility and toughness values were greatly reduced. Underaging the maraging steels was found to drastically impair the notched fatigue behavior. Crystal plasticity is usually controlled by a limited number of elementary dislocation mechanisms, even in complex structures. Those which determine dislocation mobility and how it changes under the influence of stress and temperature are of key importance for understanding and predicting the strength of materials. The authors describe in a consistent way a variety of thermally activated microscopic mechanisms of dislocation mobility in a range of crystals. The principles of the mechanisms and equations of dislocation motion are revisited and new ones are proposed. These describe mostly friction forces on dislocations such as the lattice resistance to glide or those due to sessile cores, as well as dislocation cross-slip and climb. They are critically assessed by comparison with the best available experimental results of microstructural characterization, in situ straining experiments under an electron or a synchrotron beam, as well as accurate transient mechanical tests such as stress relaxation experiments. Some recent attempts at atomistic modeling of dislocation cores under stress and temperature are also considered since they offer a complementary description of core transformations and associated energy barriers.
