Book excerpt: The ability to grasp and hold an object is not only one of the most common daily activities but also essential for living an independent life. According to a simple prehension model, the force applied upon a vertically oriented hand-held object could be decomposed into two distinctive but highly coordinated components: the grip force (GF; the component perpendicular to the hand-object contact area that provides friction) and the load force (LF; the component parallel to the hand-object contact area that can either move the object or support of the body). The GF-LF coordination could be affected by a number of factors that still remain underexplored. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of instructions and hand dominance on the relationship of GF and LF. Sixteen right-handed participants were tested on a custom designed instrumented device. They performed bimanual manipulation tasks under different instructions and mechanical conditions. The exerted GF and LF were recorded and analyzed. Indices of GF scaling, GF-LG coupling and GF modulation were calculated separately for the dominant and non-dominant hand. The result showed that the instruction of "pull" leads to higher GF-LF coordination than the instruction of "hold", as seen by a lower GF/LF ratio, higher GF-LF coupling, and higher GF modulation. The only effect of hand dominance was a more prominent time-lag of GF of the non-dominant hand. Overall, the observed findings suggest that the instructions could play an important role in GF-LF coordination, and, therefore, they should be taken into account when either studying hand manipulation activities in healthy individuals or testing hand function in various patient populations.

It crucially depends on the ability to control forces exerted upon the hand-held objects. According to a simple mechanical model, the normal component of the interaction force (i.e., grip force; GF) has to be sufficient to prevent slippage caused by the tangential component (load force; LF). A sufficient but not excessive safety margin (i.e., a 'surplus' of GF above the minimum required) is achieved by an elaborate coordination of muscles exerting GF and LF. We compared GF-LF coordination in various manipulation tasks when LF was exerted in one and two directions, as well as when the tasks were performed by applying various grasping techniques. The findings of the first two studies suggest that two distinct GF-LF coordination strategies are employed when uni- and bidirectional manipulation tasks are performed (i.e., the indices of GF-LF coordination were remarkably higher in uni- than in the bidirectional tasks). The switch between the strategies may be triggered by changes in the afferent sensory activity of the skin mechanoreceptors, rather than by switching among different muscles synergies. The following three studies suggest that the hand segments and their respective skin areas non-specialized for object manipulation could provide similar indices of GF-LF coordination as the specialized ones. However, the differences in skin friction (lower in non-specialized than in the specialized skin areas) seem not to be fully accounted for by the neural controller, as they are accounted for when the same grasp is applied to manipulate objects of different physical properties. Overall, the main findings suggest that the changes in LF direction need to be taken into account both in future research of human grasping and in the routine testing of hand function in clinical populations. In addition, our research suggests that the differences in skin friction need to be taken into account in future research of manipulation activities.

All of these normal hand actions can be disrupted following damage to the brain due to stroke or traumatic injury.This thesis presents a series of studies exploring how post-stroke subjects and healthy, age-matched subjects coordinate grip force with wrist torque when twisting an object using forearm supination/pronation.To obtain a comprehensive picture of how healthy subjects control grip force I performed a series of experiments under various conditions. Using a robotic interface that we developed for rehabilitation and assessment of hand function, I studied grasp and twist by systematically varying task parameters which included elastic resistance, movement direction, hand dominance, size of grip aperture, grip configuration and speed of rotation. When comparing the temporal/amplitude relationship between grip force and load torque across different task conditions, I found a large degree of similarity, indicating that regardless of how the twisting task is performed there is a similar control structure. Healthy individuals modulated grip force in an approximately linear fashion with load under all conditions tested. In addition, the normal force exerted by the thumb and that exerted by the other fingers were highly correlated. The coordination of grasp and twist did not change with hand dominance or with grip configuration. However, the control of grip force changed with the speed of rotation. The parallel coupling between grip force and load was reduced for the fastest rotations. In addition, small differences were found in the correlation between grip force and load torque for supination over pronation.Results of the study with chronic post-stroke subjects showed that the coordination of grasp and twist was frequently impaired in both the contralesional and ipsilesional hands. This was reflected by a lower correlation between grip force and load torque and between thumb force and finger force than in healthy subjects. In addition, the movements were significantly less smooth and movement time was prolonged using either the ipsilesional or contralesional hand compared to healthy subjects. Overall, use of excessive grip force was not prevalent post-stroke and only a minority of post-stroke subjects used significantly greater grip force to perform the task than healthy subjects. The results provide evidence that the coordination of grasp and twist is frequently impaired bilaterally following unilateral stroke. Not only did the contralesional hand exhibit impairment, but in several cases the ipsilesional hand, often referred to as the "unaffected" hand, also showed profound impairment. This detailed analysis of the kinetics and kinematics of a twisting task provides an objective, quantitative means to characterize grip coordination following stroke and may have implications in developing new strategies for training grip coordination." --

Though motor actions have long been studied by neuroscientists and physiologists, it is only recently that scientists have considered the role of actions in building the self.
