Book Synopsis The Effect of ship stiffness upon the structural response of a cargo ship to an impulsive load by : Manley St Denis
Download or read book The Effect of ship stiffness upon the structural response of a cargo ship to an impulsive load written by Manley St Denis and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study is to set up a computer program to investigate the dynamic effects resulting from an impulsive loading on a ship and to determine how these effects tend to vary with the stiffness of the hull girder. The hull is treated as a Timoshenko beam and the solution is obtained by finite difference technique. Two codes are written: an implicit one, which is more efficient for short durations, and an implicit one, which is superior for long durations of impulse. Application is made to a dry cargo ship. Limited analysis of her response to a unit impulse indicates that, in general, reduced hull rigidity tends to be beneficial. (Author).
Book Synopsis Design and Analysis of Hybrid Titanium-composite Hull Structures Under Extreme Wave and Slamming Loads by : Md. Hafizur Rahman
Download or read book Design and Analysis of Hybrid Titanium-composite Hull Structures Under Extreme Wave and Slamming Loads written by Md. Hafizur Rahman and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A finite element tool has been developed to design and investigate a multi-hull composite ship structure, and a hybrid hull of identical length and beam. Hybrid hull structure is assembled by Titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) frame and sandwich composite panels. Wave loads and slamming loads acting on both hull structures have been calculated according to ABS rules at sea state 5 with a ship velocity of 40 knots. Comparisons of deformations and stresses between two sets of loadings demonstrate that slamming loads have more detrimental effects on ship structure. Deformation under slamming is almost one order higher than that caused by wave loads. Also, Titanium frame in hybrid hull significantly reduces both deformation and stresses when compared to composite hull due to enhancement of in plane strength and stiffness of the hull. A 73 m long hybrid hull has also been investigated under wave and slamming loads in time domain for dynamic analysis.

Book excerpt: Hydrodynamics of High-Speed Marine Vehicles, first published in 2006, discusses the three main categories of high-speed marine vehicles - vessels supported by submerged hulls, air cushions or foils. The wave environment, resistance, propulsion, seakeeping, sea loads and manoeuvring are extensively covered based on rational and simplified methods. Links to automatic control and structural mechanics are emphasized. A detailed description of waterjet propulsion is given and the effect of water depth on wash, resistance, sinkage and trim is discussed. Chapter topics include resistance and wash; slamming; air cushion-supported vessels, including a detailed discussion of wave-excited resonant oscillations in air cushion; and hydrofoil vessels. The book contains numerous illustrations, examples and exercises.

Book Synopsis Stemming the Tide by : Committee on Ships'Ballast Operations
Download or read book Stemming the Tide written by Committee on Ships'Ballast Operations and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-11-05 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European zebra mussel in the Great Lakes, a toxic Japanese dinoflagellate transferred to Australia--such biologically and economically harmful stowaways have made it imperative to achieve better management of ballast water in ocean-going vessels. Stemming the Tide examines the introduction of nonindigenous species through ballast water discharge. Ballast is any solid or liquid that is taken aboard ship to achieve more controlled and safer operation. This expert volume Assesses current national and international approaches to the problem and makes recommendations for U.S. government agencies, the U.S. maritime industry, and the member states of the International Maritime Organization. Appraises technologies for controlling the transfer of organisms--biocides, filtration, heat treatment, and others --with a view toward developing the most promising methods for shipboard demonstration. Evaluates methods for monitoring the effectiveness of ballast water management in removing unwanted organisms. The book addresses the constraints inherent in ballast water management, notably shipboard ballast treatment and monitoring. Also, the committee outlines efforts to set an acceptable level of risk for species introduction using the techniques of risk analysis. Stemming the Tide will be important to all stakeholders in the issue of unwanted species introduction through ballast discharge: policymakers, port authorities, shippers, ship operators, suppliers to the maritime industry, marine biologists, marine engineers, and environmentalists.

Book Synopsis Ship Vibration Prediction Methods and Evaluation of Influence of Hull Stiffness Variation on Vibratory Response by : Roger G. Kline
Download or read book Ship Vibration Prediction Methods and Evaluation of Influence of Hull Stiffness Variation on Vibratory Response written by Roger G. Kline and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research is conducted to obtain a greater understanding of induced hull vibrations and, more specifically, to define the role of hull stiffness in such phenomena. Available methods for the prediction of vibratory response to propeller, slam and wave excitations are evaluated. Calculations of the propeller, slam- and wave-induced vibrations of three ships are presented. The three ships are a 249,300 DWT tank ship, the Great Lakes ore carrier 'STR. EDWARD L. RYERSON' and the 544 ft. general cargo ship 'S. S. MICHIGAN.' Design trends are developed with respect to characteristics that influence ship stiffness and vibratory response. The work appears in 2 volumes.
