Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Oata Analysis and Synthesis (CINOAS) * at Purdue. University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 33 (thesis year 1988) a total of 13,273 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 1 85 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 33 reports theses submitted in 1988, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Introduction: The third generation of NiTi based rotary files involves a new proprietary thermomechanical process which improves fatigue resistance and flexibility. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative wear/fatigue of three third-generation NiTi rotary endodontic file systems following use in extracted posterior human teeth in a simulated clinical model. Materials and Methods: One hundred files (five packs of five files across four brands: ProFile VortexTM, Vortex BlueTM, ProTaper GoldTM, and Coltene HyFlex® CMTM) were examined with an SEM at the same four positions along their length using a custom-fabricated sample jig before use and through three clinical simulations, and were then evaluated for wear and deformation. Files were categorized as usable, microscopically unacceptable and visually unacceptable. Results: Twelve files visibly failed throughout this study (three separated and eight plastically deformed), and the majority of these failures occurred in the first use of the file. Many instruments were evaluated as microscopically unacceptable before use. A repeated-measures logistic regression analysis found no significant effects for brand, amount of use, and their interaction for files that remained visibly useful. Of those that rated microscopically useful, a significant effect was seen for number of uses (p=0.0127). Contrasts of uses showed significance for use 0 vs. 1, 0 vs. 2, and 0 vs. 3, indicating that unused files were more likely to be microscopically acceptable than used files. No significance was seen between contrasts of uses 1, 2, or 3. Summary and Conclusions: No quantitative wear or distortion pattern specific to any brand was observed that limited multiple file uses. Poor surface condition observed microscopically is not necessarily a precursor to instrument failure. Third-generation controlled memory instruments tend to deform plastically and present minimal risk of clinical separation and canal obstruction through multiple uses.

Book excerpt: This superbly illustrated book provides detailed information on the causes of instrument failure during endodontic treatment, the factors influencing the management of such cases, and the diverse management options that may be employed to resolve the problem. Readers will find clear descriptions and comparative evaluation of the available methods, techniques, and devices. Complications that may arise during the management of fractured instruments are described, and the impact of retained file fragments on the prognosis of endodontic treatment is discussed. In addition, means of preventing iatrogenic errors from occurring in the first place (the best form of management) are explained, emphasizing that the risk of instrument failure is reduced if proper guidelines are carefully considered and followed. The book will assist both endodontists and general dental practitioners in achieving an optimal outcome when confronted with the time-consuming and challenging task of dealing with a fractured instrument within the root canal – a still frequent circumstance despite the plethora of improvements in instrument design, alloy composition, and manufacturing processes.
