Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Well-being Study (FFCW), the current study examined the effect of Head Start on mother (n = 3,575) and father (n = 1,812) involvement in activities at home with children. The first four waves of FFCW data followed children and their parents from birth to age five. FFCW data included families from low- to middle-income backgrounds allowing direct comparisons in this study between very low-income families whose children were eligible for Head Start to more advantaged families whose children were not. Using scales of parental involvement in at-home activities with children, mothers and fathers of Head Start students were compared to mothers and fathers of children in parent care, daycare, pre-kindergarten and preschool. A two-step analytic process was used (a) to establish that average levels of parent involvement varied significantly across childcare setting groups at each of the three waves, and (b) to control for known background characteristics and previous parent involvement while predicting post-intervention parent involvement. In the first step, analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed significant differences between mothers of Head Start children and mothers of children in other childcare categories before Head Start entry, and revealed positive effects of Head Start on mother involvement after program exit. In the second step, Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression further controlled background characteristics that have predicted mother involvement in previous literature. The OLS results supported the ANOVA finding that Head Start positively influenced mother involvement. Although ANOVA and OLS regression results suggested that Head Start did not affect the involvement of fathers, results indicated that the level of father involvement when the child was one year old predicted involvement when the child was five years old, even after controlling for whether fathers lived with the child. A post-hoc Structural Equation Model (SEM) further examined the effect of fathers' involvement and co-residence in years one and three on involvement at year five. Fathers who reported high levels of involvement in daily activities when children were very young maintained high levels as children moved through preschool and into kindergarten. Efforts to engage fathers early on in the daily lives of their children may bring cumulative dividends for both father and child through his continued involvement as the child grows older, even - and perhaps especially - when the father no longer lives with the child.

While the topic of parental control is not new, there has been controversy about the concept, with some researchers and clinicians weighing in on the side of control and others against it. This book argues that part of the controversy stems from different uses of the term, with some investigators focusing more on parents being in control and others on controlling children. Using a definition of control as "pressure for children to think, feel, or behave in specific ways," the author explores research on parental control, arguing that there is more consensus than previously thought. Using this research base, the author provides evidence that parental control can be subtle and can lurk within many "positive" parenting approaches; parental control undermines the very behaviors we wish to inculcate in our children; providing autonomy support--the opposite of control--is a challenge, even when parents are committed to doing so. With controversy in the literature about parental control and attention in the media on the ways in which parents step over the control line (e.g., screaming on the soccer sidelines, pressuring children in academics), this book is especially timely. A highly readable yet research-based treatment of the topic of parental control, this book: *explores the controversial topic of parental control; addresses controversy about the positive and negative effects of parental control; and disentangles various parenting concepts, such as involvement, structure, and control; *illustrates how control can be overt, such as in the use of corporal punishment or covert, as in the use of controlling praise; *provides evidence that control may produce compliance in children preventing them from initiating and taking responsibility for their own behavior; *explores why parents are controlling with their children, including environmental and economic stresses and strains, characteristics of children that "pull" for control, and factors in parents' own psychologies that lead them to be "hooked" on children's performance; and *provides examples of control in the areas of academics and sports--the hierarchical and competitive nature of these domains is seen as contributing to parents' tendencies to become controlling in these areas.

The purpose of this study was to identify and understand hindrances to parental involvement at Head Start from the perspective of fathers. The research took place at three Head Start sites, with all sites coming under the auspices of Semcac/Head Start. The methodology and data analysis were based on the method of Moustakas (1994, 2001) and involved interviewing seven Head Start fathers or stepfathers. Regarding hindrances to father involvement, three themes emerged from the interview data. Data indicated that the nature of fathers' employment, work schedules, and lack of work influenced involvement. Other themes pertained to family issues, circumstances, and relationship issues as well as father personal beliefs and self-perceptions of fathering. Recommendations for future research included conducting studies on fathers and their involvement with the peers of their Head Start children. Another area requiring more research could be the role that grandparents play at Head Start. As for implications for Head Start personnel, all fathers seemed generally pleased with Head Start in that all fathers felt Head Start was beneficial to their children in their learning experience. However, in keeping with fathers' work schedules, Head Start administrators might schedule events at various times during the day and possibly offer more father/child activities during the year. Father support groups or parenting classes at Head Start might be other options for Head Start administrators to consider.
