Book excerpt: Students with disabilities in transition from school to adulthood often experience problems with self-determination skills, especially goal-related skills (e.g., goal setting, expression, and taking action). Instruction in these skills is needed. This project examined the effect of instructing portions of the self-determination intervention Whose Future is it Anyway? (WFA) dealing with goal-related skills and its effect on goal setting, expressing, and taking action. Participants included five students with disabilities in a transition program ages 18 to 21. Procedures involved a pretest using the ChoiceMaker Assessment and the Arc Scale, followed by the implementation of the WFA intervention, and posttests using the same two assessments as well as a rating scale completed by teachers independent of the study administered immediately following the intervention. The measures of participants' goal-setting, expression, and taking action as measured by teachers independent of the study increased using the ChoiceMaker assessment and Teacher's Scale showed a degree of growth during the intervention. The student-reported measures using the Arc scale did not show an increase due to a poor match between the curriculum and the researcher's choice of questions from the scale. The results that were obtained have implications in terms of knowing that goal-related skills can be increased through the use of self-determination interventions. These finding may have implications for additional research and curriculum usage in high schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a comprehensive overview of three theoretical perspectives proposed during the past decade addressing the self-determination construct as it applies to the field of special education. The three models were selected primarily because they have focused on defining and categorizing self-determination for all students with disabilities, including students with mental retardation and other cognitive disabilities. These models are intended to provide students and practitioners a solid grounding in self-determination theory. All models have been evaluated among students with cognitive disabilities but are applicable to all students with or without disabilities. The authors research each model and have applied their own theoretical framework to special education, ensuring that interventions to promote skills like problem solving, goal setting, decision making, and self-advocacy are in place for all students. By reading this text, the reader will gain a solid, theoretically based foundation in understanding the self-determination construct which ultimately supports the development of instructional interventions that enable students with disabilities to become self-determined. It will be useful as a text in upper undergraduate and graduate courses in special education, psychology, social work/welfare, general education, vocational rehabilitation and disability studies.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This qualitative action research study investigated the observed behaviors and reported experiences when self-determination skills were promoted through individualized and group goal setting in the learning support classroom. The study was conducted with seven learning support students during the support portion of the day. All students participated in goal setting and group discussion on a weekly basis with the guidance of the learning support teacher. The students self- monitored their self-selected goals each week. This study discusses the improvement of self-determination levels through a pre- and post questionnaire. The text further discusses increased student achievement and the development of a positive learning environment. An increase in the students' communication skills was also noted.

Book excerpt: There is a lack of research demonstrating self-determination skills being taught at the elementary level. This pre-post design study examined the impact of implementing a self-determination curriculum unit to two groups of fourth graders, ages nine to eleven years old, who receive special education for various diagnoses, including specific learning disability, speech and language impairment, other health impairment, and autism. Eleven students learned about self-determination (i.e. self-awareness, self-advocacy, choice making, and goal setting) through 28 lessons which included the use of role playing, hands-on activities, and literature. All participants, students, their parents, and their teachers, completed the AIR Self-Determination Scale before and after the curriculum intervention. Researcher reflection notes, student responses to post-intervention motivation scales, responses to research supplemental questions on pre- and post-surveys from parents and teachers were additional data sources. The findings indicate that overall, there were examples of growth in students' self-determined behaviors. In particular, the capacity scores from the AIR measure showed an increase in perceptions of students' self-determination skills, based on parent and teacher surveys. In discussions during the unit lessons, all students were able to articulate their goals and recognize the meaning of key self-determination terms in various aspects of the curriculum. Recommendations for practice include implementing the curriculum unit with a larger number of students, including students in general education and those with more significant disabilities. Further research should be conducted to identify more long term effects of elementary-level self-determination curriculum for students with disabilities.

Book excerpt: Students with disabilities often have difficulties transitioning from high school to employment. Many students lack the self-determination skills needed to make this transition. Self-determination involves students implementing strategies that enable them to modify and regulate their own behavior; and utilizing strategies that support them to track progress toward goals. The research literature has shown that self-determination instruction can facilitate positive transition outcomes. Collaboration between districts and outside agencies has also been shown to improve transition outcomes, according to existing research. This study examines the effects of self-determination training, taught by Vocational Rehabilitation counselors, on self-determination skills of students with disabilities. Participants included 11 students, ages 15-18, who have been identified as having a specific learning disability, intellectual disability, other health impairment, or autism. The target behavior will be increased self-determination scores on two instruments: a formal rating scale and curriculum-based assessment. The effects of the lessons will be measured by the AIR Self-Determination Scale and a Curriculum Based Assessment. Ten lessons were taught by a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. The researcher found that student self-determination scores did not substantially increase after receiving 0́−Job Club0́+ instruction taught by the Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor, but that participants showed an increased knowledge surrounding disability disclosure in the workplace and increased self-determination scores in the area of self-monitoring of progress towards a goal. The research also showed that participants who had been previously or were currently employed showed greater progress on a curriculum based assessment than those with no employment history.

To ensure consistency across the volume, chapter authors review and integrate existing research, identify strengths and weaknesses, note gaps in the literature, and discuss implications for practice and future research. The second edition has been fully updated throughout to take into account recent changes to federal laws as well as the most current academic research, and an entirely new section has been added on research methods in special education.

Book excerpt: "For students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD) and Learning Disabilities (LD), the transition from high school to adult life can be especially difficult. Research suggests that students who have been taught self-advocacy skills and are given the opportunity to practice and generalize these skills often have an easier time transitioning and are more successful in their post-secondary endeavors. The purpose of this thesis is to explore literature on self-advocacy skills, available curricula, and programs that successfully implement self-advocacy strategies. These include: Self-Determination Synthesis Project, Learning Education about Disabilities Program (LEAD), the Self-Advocacy Strategy, Hypermedia Program, and the Threshold Program."--leaf 4.
