Book excerpt: This important book draws together, for the first time, a vastwealth of information on all major aspects of the farming of Arcticcharr, a highly prized and commercially valuable salmonid. Theauthor, Gavin Johnston who has many years' experience of farmingArctic charr, teaching about and researching the species, hasproduced a book that is a landmark publication and an essentialpurchase for all those involved with the species. The book is broadly divided into three sections. The firstsection covers Arctic charr interactions with humans and thecharr's biological requirements for culture. Section two is apractical guide to the art and science of early-rearing Arcticcharr; a hands on application of current knowledge in Arctic charraquaculture. The final section of the book focuses on thecommercial production of Arctic charr, providing cutting-edgeinformation for all those involved in the exploitation of thisvaluable species. Arctic Charr Aquaculture is an essential purchase foranyone involved in, or considering involvement in farming of thisspecies. Farm managers and other personnel in fish farms andexperimental aquaculture units, fish and aquatic biologists willfind a huge amount of useful data in this book. Libraries in alluniversity departments and research establishments whereaquaculture, fisheries and fish biology are studies and taughtshould have copies of this book on their shelves. This book bringstogether for the first time the knowledge needed to farm and marketArctic Charr. Part One is an overview of Arctic Charr aquaculturebeginning with the history and development of Charr aquaculture, the biological attributes of Arctic Charr, the physicalrequirements for growth and commercial production requirements.Other chapters are devoted to Charr health, nutrition and feeding.Part Two is a practical guide for the producer operating an ArcticCharr farm either as a vertically integrated operation or asdiscrete hatcheries and grow out farms. Part Three is devoted tothe business of commercially producing Arctic Charr, and althoughit deals specifically with Charr it also covers many businessaspects of farming relevant to any fish species under cold watercultivation. It covers farm business management, the economics andfinance of Arctic Charr farming, marketing Charr products and aclosing section on how to avoid the pitfalls which others includingthe author have experienced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intake of food by fishes is an area of study that is of great importance to the applied sciences of fisheries and aquaculture for a number of reasons. For example a thorough knowledge of factors influencing the ingestion of feed can lead to successful manipulation of the rearing environment of cultured fishes, thereby ensuring improved growth performance and feed utilisation, and decreasing the amount of waste (and consequent pollution) per unit of fish produced. This important book, which has arisen out of a European Union COST programme, illustrates how insights into the biological and environmental factors that underlie the feeding responses of fish may be used to address practical issues of feed management. Food Intake in Fish contains carefully edited contributions from internationally recognised scientists, providing a book that is an invaluable tool and reference to all those involved in aquaculture, especially those working in the aquaculture feed industry and scientific personnel in commercial and research aquaculture facilities. This book should also find a place on the shelves of fish biologists and physiologists and as a reference in libraries of universities, research establishments and aquaculture equipment companies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern aquaculture is faced with a number of challenges, including public concern about environmental impacts and the welfare of farmed fish. A fundamental understanding of fish biology is central to finding ways to meet these challenges and is also essential for maintaining the industry's sustainability. Furthermore, the behaviour of fish under culture situations has long been ignored despite heavy commercial losses that can result from fish stressed and hence disease-prone, due to bad husbandry techniques. This important book summarises the current understanding of the behavioural biology of farmed species and illustrates how this can be applied to improve aquaculture practice. Informative and engaging, Aquaculture & Behavior brings the reader up-to-date with major issues pertaining to aquaculture. Everyone from fish farmers to upper level students will find this book a valuable and practical resource. Libraries in universities and research establishments where animal behavior, aquaculture, veterinary and biological sciences are studied and taught should have copies of this work on their shelves.

Book excerpt: Over the past few years, it has become more and more obvious that fish farming will become increasingly important in the future. As fish farming moves into its industrial phase, technology will be an important factor in determining its successful development. It is therefore important for scientists & representatives from the aquaculture industry to meet to define state of the art and explore future development of fish farming technology for different fish species. 81 papers and abstracts were presented at the conference. The proceedings reflect the different sections of the conference: the plenum sessions and three parallel sessions: Juvenile marine fish, open production plants, closed production plants and poster sessions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is almost thirty years since Professor G. G. Winberg established the basis for experimental studies in fish energetics with the publication of his monograph, Rate of Metabolism and Food Requirements of Fishes. His ultimate aim was to develop a scientific approach to fish culture and management, and the immense volume of literature generated in the ensuing years has been mainly in response to the demand for information from a rapidly expanding, world-wide aquaculture industry and to the shortcomings of contemporary practices in fisheries management. The purpose of this book is not to review this literature compre hensively, but, assuming an informed readership, to focus attention on topics in which new knowledge and theory are beginning to be applied in practice. Most emphasis has been placed on food; feeding; production (growth and reproduction) and energy budgeting, as these have most influence on the development of fish culture. Some chapters offer practical advice for the selection of methods, and warn of pitfalls in previous approaches. In others the influence of new theory on the interpretation of studies in fish energetics is discussed in the context of resource allocation and adaptation. We hope that the scope of material presented here will have sufficient interest and value to help significantly to fulfil Winberg's original objectives.

This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consumers, producers, stakeholders, governmental regulatory agencies and NGOs are becoming increasingly concerned with the conditions in which aquatic organisms are reared worldwide. High demand for fish for human consumption represents a challenge that has to be fulfilled by an ever-growing aquaculture production. In this scenario, animal care over the entire life and production cycle must be guaranteed while avoiding significant economic losses. As a result, research is needed to maximize yields and minimize adverse outcomes by optimizing rearing conditions while keeping in mind the welfare of cultured fish. In this Research Topic we will focus on relevant aspects related to fish response to both biotic and abiotic stressors as a means of improving their welfare, integrating both physiological and behavioral responses. In fish the adaptive responses to rearing may differ depending on several factors, including the characteristics of the stimuli and the intrinsic properties of the species or the selected line. If complete adaptation is missing, the application of single or multiple stimuli may result in a stress response. Stress responses have been linked to systemic adjustments which negatively impacts the immune system of fish, as well as their growth and reproductive performance. Therefore, one of the main interests of this Topic is to understand the allostatic responses of aquatic organisms to several stimuli/ factors that may be present during rearing. An additional focus of this Topic will be on conditions that may improve fish welfare by decreasing the stress response, such as implementing adequate swimming conditions. The focus of the Topic is to contribute to our present knowledge to better understand the physiological response of aquatic organisms, which is central to improving aquaculture practices. Emphasis will be placed on potentially existing interactions between physiological and endocrine pathways to build an overall stress response. Another aspect that will be considered in this Topic is how intraspecific variability may affect the stress response.
