Book excerpt: The program was designed to assess the effects of temperature and absorbed moisture on the static compression behavior of epoxy matrix composites under loading conditions wherein the dominant failure modes are those which occur in structural applications. Compression test fixtures providing varying degrees of geometrical constraint were employed in order to conduct a complete series of column tests ranging from perfectly elastic to fully restrained. Two graphite/epoxy materials were evaluated, T300/5208 and AS/3501-5A. Both longitudinal and transverse orientations of three specimen types, a 0-degree unidirectional, a quasi-isotropic and a 67%-0-degree laminate were evaluated at four temperatures, -54 C ( -65 F), 22 C (72 F), 93 C (200 F) and 135 C (275 F) after exposure to one of two environmental conditions: dry, (22 C (72 F) and 40% R.H.) and wet (82 C (180 F) and 90% R.H.). Both materials were characterized under static-tension and shear loading and Tg, thermal expansion and moisture distributions were determined. Analytical procedures for predicting the column buckling behavior under various conditions were developed. Elastic buckling of the laminates investigated were relatively unaffected by moisture and temperature. The inelastic buckling curve revealed a drop due to moisture and temperature which was dependent upon material and laminate type. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the first task of a three task program directed at the study of relationship between damage propagation and residual static strength of composite laminates. In Task 1: Preliminary screening, two laminates a 24-Ply 67% 0 deg. fiber and a 32-Ply quasi-isotropic laminate of T300/5208 graphite epoxy material were selected for study. Two damage types were studied, a low velocity impact condition (i.e., simulated tool drop) and a badly drilled hole. An initial study was conducted for each damage type to determine the detailed damage introduction parameters resulting in the selection of one set of impact and one set of poor drilling conditions. Baseline static tension and static compression tests were conducted on each of the four damage/laminate conditions. Stress vs life (S-N) fatigue data were then generated at range ratio R=-1 for each of the four conditions. The damage growth characteristics were monitored on each fatigue specimen using a modified Holscan ultrasonic unit. A subset of the damaged hole specimens was also evaluated in static compression and fatigue (R = -1) using TBE enhanced X-ray methods to monitor damage growth and to assess any detrimental effect of TBE on subsequent behavior of the damage. The results indicate significant reduction in initial static tension and compression strengths for the damaged hole condition in both laminates.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the first task of the last two tasks of a three-task program focusing on the study of relationship between damage propagation and residual strength of graphite/epoxy laminates. Specimens of two laminate types, a 32-ply quasi-isotropic and 24-ply 67%-0, containing a centered poorly drilled hole were evaluated in this study. Baseline static tension and compression tests were conducted at high and low strain rates and at elevated temperature.

Book excerpt: The effect of absorbed moisture on the mechanical properties of a neat epoxy resin and derived graphite/epoxy composites is investigated. Glass transition temperature and modulus as a function of moisture content and temperature is determined for both the neat resin and composite. In addition, elastic modulus for the neat resin, and strength and elastic moduli for unidirectional composites and quasi-isotropic laminates are determined as a function of absorbed moisture and temperature. A method for predicting moisture content and through-the-thickness profile for a laminate exposed to a constant humidity and temperature is discussed. Particular attention is also given to the details of environmental testing. Data indicates that absorbed moisture and temperature effects on the neat resin translate directly to matrix dominated properties of the composite and can lead to a change in failure mode, while filament dominated properties show very little environmental sensitivity. Results also indicate that resin glass transition temperature is a function of processing as well absorbed moisture.

Effect of Static Immersion in Water on the Tensile Strength of Cross-Ply Laminates written by Byung-Lip Lee and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes studies to determine the effect of water absorption on the tensile strength of 90/0/90 deg laminates. The ultimate strength was found to decrease continuously with increasing amounts of water absorption. Yield stress first increased and then decreased to form a broad maximum. Assuming perfect bonding between the laminae, the change of yield stress could be predicted by overlapping the decrease of interlaminar residual stress (as a prestress) and the change of failure stress of 90 deg lamina. Anisotropic volume expansion of the laminae by water absorption is considered to be responsible for the relaxation of interlaminar residual stress. (Author).

Book Synopsis Polymer Matrix Composites: Materials Usage, Design, and Analysis by : Composite Materials Handbook – 17 (CMH-17)
Download or read book Polymer Matrix Composites: Materials Usage, Design, and Analysis written by Composite Materials Handbook – 17 (CMH-17) and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 955 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of this six-volume compendium provides methodologies and lessons learned for the design, analysis, manufacture, and field support of fiber-reinforced, polymeric-matrix composite structures. It also provides guidance on material and process specifications and procedures for using the data that is presented in Volume 2. The information provided is consistent with the guidance provided in Volume 1, and is an extensive compilation of the current knowledge and experiences of engineers and scientists from industry, government, and academia who are active in composites. The Composite Materials Handbook, referred to by industry groups as CMH-17, is a six-volume engineering reference tool that contains over 1,000 records of the latest test data for polymer matrix, metal matrix, ceramic matrix, and structural sandwich composites. CMH-17 provides information and guidance necessary to design and fabricate end items from composite materials. It includes properties of composite materials that meet specific data requirements as well as guidelines for design, analysis, material selection, manufacturing, quality control, and repair. The primary purpose of the handbook is to standardize engineering methodologies related to testing, data reduction, and reporting of property data for current and emerging composite materials. It is used by engineers worldwide in designing and fabricating products made from composite materials.
