Book excerpt: Research suggests that moderate to high intensity dynamic warm up exercises can enhance the excitability of the fast twitch muscle fibers through Post-Activation Potentiation (PAP), and prime them to play a greater role during jumping and sprinting. The purpose of this study was to determine if VertiMax jumps executed at the end of a normal dynamic exercise warm up will signifcantly improve short term athletic performance. Twenty participants were randomly placed in one of 5 groups for the duration of the study. The subjects performed one of the following warm-ups determined by random selection: dynamic warm-up (DW) or a dynamic warm up plus VertiMax jumps (DWV). On Day 2 all the subjects participated in the opposite warm-up routine then what they performed on Day 1. Each session concluded with vertical jump and lane agility testing. No significant difference from DW to DWV for vertical jump was found [t(19) = 1.242, p > .05]. No significant difference from DWLA to DWVLA was found [t(19) = 1.082, p> .05]. The mean on the DWVVERT was 26.13 inches (sd=4.37), and the mean on the DWVERT was 25.83 inches (sd=4.55). The mean on the DWVLA was 11.03 seconds (sd = .77) and the mean on the DWLA was 11.13 seconds (sd = .65). It was concluded that a warm-up that includes a high intensity activity at the end of a dynamic warm up does not improve vertical jump or agility greater than dynamic warm up alone.

The goal of this study was to investigate how a general cycling warm-up, a dynamic stretching routine, a static stretching routine, and the combination of both static stretching followed by cycling and dynamic stretching followed by cycling affect WAnT performance. Ten recreationally active subjects, completed five WAnT on a Monark Ergomedic 984E cycle separated by at least 48 hours. Subjects were randomly assigned to an order of conditions and performed a different condition prior to each WAnT. The warm-up protocols consisted of static stretching protocol, dynamic stretching protocol, a cycling protocol, and the combination of both static stretching followed by cycling and dynamic stretching followed by cycling. Peak anaerobic power, mean anaerobic power, power drop, and percent fatigue were calculated following the completion of all five conditions. No significant statistical differences were found among the five conditions for any of the four measurements. In conclusion, various stretching and active warm-up methods prior to the WAnT did not increase or inhibit performance.

Seventy two subjects (38 males, 34 females) performed static stretching (SS), dynamic stretching (OS), self-myofascial release with a foam roller (FR), and no warm-up prior (C) to the sit and reach test (SR), vertical jump (VJ), and standing broad jump (SBJ). Outcome measurements included SR measurement, VJ height, and SBJ distance. Data was analyzed using a one-way repeated measures analysis of variance. The difference in pre and post warm-up SR measurements were statistically significant (p = 0.000) following SS, OS, and FR in comparison to C. There were no significant effects in VJ height (p = 0.995), or in SBJ length following any of the warm-up protocols (p = 0.820). It was concluded that SS, OS, and FR have no acute effects on jump performance, but may increase low back and hamstring flexibility.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether a dynamic-stretching warm up (DWU) intervention performed daily over four weeks positively influenced power, speed, agility, endurance, flexibility, and strength performance measures in collegiate wrestlers when compared to a static-stretching warm up (SWU) intervention. Methods. Subjects were 24 male National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I wrestlers from the University of Wyoming. A four-week treatment condition (DWU) and active control condition (SWU) was introduced into the wrestlers' daily pre-season workouts. Anthropometric and performance measures were evaluated at baseline and post-intervention: peak torque of the quadriceps and hamstrings, medicine ball underhand throw for distance, 300-yard shuttle, pull-ups, push-ups, sit-ups, broad jump, 600-meter run, sit-and-reach test, and trunk extension test. Results. Following the DWU intervention, several performance measure improvements were observed. The DWU showed positive increases in performance among peak torque of the quadriceps (11%), broad jump (4%), medicine ball underhand throw for distance (4%), sit-ups (11%), and push-ups (3%). There was a decrease in average time to completion of the 300-yard shuttle (2%) and the 600-meter run (2.4%) which is suggestive of enhanced muscular strength and endurance and anaerobic capacity in the DWU group. Neither the DWU nor the SWU influenced peak torque of the hamstrings, flexibility of the hamstrings or trunk, nor muscular endurance of the arms and shoulder girdle. In contrast to the DWU intervention, there was no observed improvement in the SWU group for peak torque of the quadriceps, broad jump, 300-yard shuttle run, medicine ball underhand throw for distance, sit-ups, push-ups or 600-meter run. Conclusion. Our findings suggest that incorporation of this specific four-week DWU into the daily training regimen of wrestlers produced longer term or chronic performance enhancements in regards to power, strength, muscular endurance, anaerobic capacity, and acceleration.

Hoyt and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: To compare the effect of a personalized corrective exercise warm-up protocol based on an individual's Functional Movement Screen (FMS) score and the effect of a general corrective exercise warm-up protocol that addresses overall movement deficits, on scores of the FMS and the Y Balance Test (YBT) in college athletes and dancers. Introduction: The FMS and the YBT are used as instruments to manage and identify injury risk in the physically active. Both have been previously reported to be a predictive tool for injury risk. Exercise strategies to target risk factors that the FMS and YBT identify have been reported to improve the scores of the FMS. These exercise strategies are closely related to the protocols reported to also improvement YBT scores, in that they involve neuromuscular control, flexibility, and core stability. It is important to determine if these exercise strategies can improve both FMS and YBT scores as compared to a control. Methods: Athletes and dancers from an NCAA Division III institution participated in an exercise intervention program. FMS scores and YBT scores were collected before and after a 6 week exercise intervention protocol. The FMS consists of seven movements to be evaluated: deep squat, hurdle step, in-line lunge, shoulder mobility, active straight leg raise, trunk stability push-up and rotary stability. The YBT consists of two tests with three reach patterns for the upper quarter and three reach patterns for the lower quarter. The YBT-UQ consists of reach patterns with the upper extremity in medial, inferolateral, and superolateral reach directions and the YBT-LQ consist of reach patterns with the lower extremity in anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral reach directions. The experimental and control groups received a corrective exercise protocol that lasted approximately 15 minutes and was incorporated into their regular exercise schedules. The experimental group underwent a personalized corrective exercise warm-up of 3 to 4 exercises, based on their lowest score of the seven movement patterns and/or asymmetry on the FMS. The control group received a general corrective exercise warm-up protocol prescribed to improve overall movement deficits from the seven patterns of the FMS. Results: Pre-test and post-test measurement did significantly differ for the FMS 21 point scores, FMS 100 point scores, and YBT-LQ composite, but did not differ for the YBT-UQ composite and YBT-UQ, as well as the interaction of group and time for the FMS on the 21 point scores, FMS 100 point scores, YBT-LQ composite and YBT-UQ. Scores did not differ significantly between sport categories in the FMS on the 21 point scale, FMS on the 100 point scale, YBT-LQ and YBT-UQ. Conclusion: A personalized 3 to 4 corrective exercise warm-up protocol did not significantly improve scores of the FMS and YBT among athletes and dancers as compared to a general corrective exercise warm-up protocol. However, it did support the hypothesis that there will be no signficant difference in improvement in scores of the FMS and YBT among various athletes and dancers. It was also determined that the results of this study were inconclusive due to the study being underpowered. Future studies should be conducted to examine if adding individualized manual techniques and specific exercises targeting mobility and stability to a personalized corrective exercise protocol improves FMS and YBT scores compared to a general movement oriented warm-up protocol.
