Book excerpt: This study examined the effect of light curing sources on shear bond strength and degree of conversion of orthodontic resin composite adhesive as function of type of curing unit and total energy, as well as evaluated the correlation between shear bond strength and degree of conversion. Curing units included in the study were plasma arc (PA), light emitting diode (LED) and quartz tungsten halogen (QTH) with 5k, 10k, or 15k mJ/cm2 of total energy delivered to the orthodontic adhesive by each unit type. Based on an analysis of variance (a =.05), there was no significant effect of type of curing source on shear bond strength; however, there was a significant effect of total energy, with shear bond strength increasing as energy increased across curing units. For degree of conversion there was a significant effect of curing unit with PA producing higher degree of conversion than LED or QTH, which were not significantly different from each other. There was also a significant effect of total energy on degree of conversion with a significant increase between 5k to 10k mJ/cm2. There was a positive moderate overall correlation between shear bond strength and degree of conversion. Results of this study suggest that the PA curing unit is more efficient at polymerization (degree of conversion) of orthodontic resin composite adhesive. However, there is no difference in shear bond strength produced when using PA, LED or QTH curing sources for orthodontic bracket bonding procedures when equal total energy is delivered to the adhesive.

Book excerpt: Background: Light cured composite resin can be time consuming for bonding orthodontic brackets. A new Blue light diode laser may reduce curing times for composite resins. Hypothesis: The laser will achieve similar bond strengths in half the time and at greater distances as the LED. Methods: 90 extracted premolars will be bonded and cured using Laser and LED curing units at varying times, another 120 extracted premolars will be bonded and cured at varying distances. An Instron machine will be used to test shear bond strength. Results: The laser was not able to achieve similar bond strengths as the LED curing light in half of the curing time. At 5 seconds, the laser had 35% lower bond strengths but was still in the clinically acceptable range. The laser achieved similar bond strengths when the curing tip was at greater distances as when it was close to the bracket-adhesive-tooth interface.

Book excerpt: Introduction: The polymerization and acid-base reactions in resin-modified glass-ionomers (RMGI) are thought to compete with and inhibit one another. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of visible light-cure (VLC) delay on the polymerization efficiency and orthodontic bond strength of a dual-cured RMGI. Methods: An RMGI light-cured immediately, 2.5, 5, or 10 minutes after mixing comprised the experimental groups. Isothermal and dynamic temperature scan differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis of the RMGI was performed to determine extents of VLC polymerization and acid-base reaction exotherms. Human premolars (n = 18/group) were bonded with the RMGI. Shear bond strength and adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores were determined. Results: DSC results showed the 10 minute delay RMGI group experienced significantly (P 0.05) lower VLC polymerization compared to the other groups. Acid-base reaction exotherms were undetected in all groups except the 10 minute delay group. No significant differences (P0.05) were noted among the groups for mean shear bond strength. A chi-square test showed no significant difference (P = 0.428) in ARI scores between groups. Conclusions: Delay in light-curing may reduce polymerization efficiency and alter the structure of the RMGI, but orthodontic shear bond strength does not appear to be compromised.

Book excerpt: The evolution of orthodontic materials in the past 5 decades has been a unique progress curve characterized by periods of intense activity with many developments followed by long quiescent intervals. An example of the delay in adopting the advances in dentistry might well be illustrated by the acid-etching technique, which was introduced in the mid 1950s1 and became universally accepted in the 1960s. It took more than a decade for this practice to become standard procedure in orthodontics on a large scale. Infact, orthodontic bonding has advanced more in last 10 years than previous 25. In the past decade, we have witnessed unprecedented progress in bonding to enamel with various materials techniques and auxiliaries involving glass ionomer bonding, self-etching primers, and new, powerful light-curing sources, along with self-ligating brackets and a different treatment concept, the Invisalign technique.

Book excerpt: Demineralization of enamel has been one of the iatrogenic effects of fixed orthodontic therapy, for which various authors have suggested the use of fluoride to reduce the decalcification and development of white spot lesion. In the present study, the shear bond strength of light-cure composite adhesive, self-cure composite adhesive, light-cure glass ionomer cement and acidic primer were tested at the end of 24 hours after bonding. The results proved that the acidic primer system had highest shear bond strength while Light-cure glass ionomer system had the least shear bond strength. But the mean values met the minimal shear bond strength required for orthodontic bonding. After bond failure, least amount of glass ionomer cement was present on the enamel surface, followed by acidic primer system, light-cure composite and self-cure composite system. So, it is advantageous to use light-cure glass ionomer cement for bonding in terms of less amount of time spent and no enamel damage during cleaning procedure after debonding.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effect of a highly filled light-cured sealant (HFLCS) on bracket shear bond strength and subsequent adhesive remnant index (ARI) following exposure to cariogenic challenge. Specimens were divided into two groups to receive conventional primer or HFLCS prior to orthodontic bracket bonding in a simulated oral environment. After curing bracket adhesive, specimens were separated into two storage solutions, either phosphate buffered saline or a demineralization solution (pH 4.1) for 96 hours. Brackets then underwent shear bond strength testing followed by ARI scoring. Enamel surfaces were visually examined for white spot lesion (WSL) severity using a WSL scoring index. HFLCS and exposure to demineralization conditions were not significant factors in shear bond strength or subsequent adhesive fracture pattern (ANOVA, p>.05). The majority of brackets were given an ARI score of 1, meaning that greater than 50% of the resin adhesive remained on the bracket. A significant difference (p

Book excerpt: Traditional bonding materials are incapable of bonding in presence of moisture, are challenged by "Moist-field" bonding materials. Claims and counter claims are made regarding their, efficacy to use as ideal orthodontic bonding adhesives. Present study done to compare Shearbondstrength of Ethyl cyanoacrylate(Smart Bond) and self cure acrylic(Rely-a-Bond) under different conditions. Rely-a-Bond and Smart Bond, are acceptable bonding materials in dry and wet conditions respectively with regards to Shear bond strength values per se. Rely-a-Bond showed significant increase in Shear bond strength from 1 hour to 24 hours. Smart Bond shows significant decrease in Shear bond strength over time. Rely-a-Bond has significantly increased Shear bond strength than Smart Bond at all times. Rely-a-Bond has high probability of failure at 1 hour; however show drastic improvement at 24 hours. Hence usage of Rely-a-Bond, force application should be deferred for 24 hours. Smart Bond adhesive is unsuitable for use as a bonding agent in routine orthodontic practice. However, the ability of this adhesive to adhere to wet surfaces could enable practitioners to bond attachments in wet conditions.
