Book excerpt: Co-teaching is a method that is increasing within schools across the US as educators strive to leave no child behind. It is a costly method, having two paid instructors in one classroom, with an average of 24 students shared between them. If it significantly increases the achievement of all students, it is well worth the costs involved. However, few studies have analyzed the effectiveness of this method on student achievement. This research follows the academic accomplishments of students in a ninth grade physical science course. Nine sections of the course "Force and Motion" were taught with a single teacher, and two additional sections were co-taught, one led by a science-certified and special educator, and another co-taught by two science certified teachers. Subgroup achievement performance was analyzed to determine whether significant differences exist between students with or without IEPs, as well as other factors such as free and reduced lunch status or gender. The results show significance with the presence of a co-teacher, while there is minimal effect size of co-teaching in this study for students with IEPs. The benefactors in these ninth grade co-taught classes were the students without IEPs, an unintended result of co-teaching.

Test scores between this year's students and last year's students, as well as test scores of this year's students during treatment and non-treatment were compared to determine any change in academic competencies. Additionally, students completed exit tickets, interviews, and attitude surveys. The instructor and a peer made observations, and together with students' information, data was analyzed to establish any change in amount of time students spend on-task during class, as well as in their attitudes about the course content and classroom environment.

Book excerpt: Collaboration in Action was designed to facilitate a learning environment that would increase motivation and engagement among students in ninth grade English classroom. The model that was used was based on the structure used in scholastic journalism, which required the participating students to be teachers, learners and collaborators. The curriculum was implemented in a ninth grade English classroom at a Title I high school. Prior to the implementation, the class average was in the D+ range. Collaboration in Action was used alongside a novel study. The students were grouped based on skills and social interactions and expected to work together to complete tasks. The students were reliant on one another to complete tasks and turn in assignments, in order for their groups to succeed. It was critical for the students to monitor and manage one another's progress. Through this curriculum, it was found that by placing students in structured, collaborative learning environments, they were more likely to be engaged in their material, than when in a traditional classroom environment. Creating a structure in which students had to rely on one another made each student feel personally responsible for the success of his/her peers. Collaboration in Action facilitated a sense of belonging, ownership and community for students that helped them feel supported. Through Collaboration in Action, teachers can borrow from the successful practices of the journalism classroom. Despite the unique nature of scholastic journalism, the structures that are used in electives can garner meaningful results in the core subject areas as well.

Students were divided into two groups for the unit taught on light. Four classes, 122 students, were taught using cooperative learning strategies this was compared to two classes, 65 students, who were taught the same information without the use of cooperative learning strategies. Due to the short duration of the intervention most of the results were not significant, although the students' willingness to work together did show improvement in the group of students who were taught with cooperative learning strategies compared to the students who were not taught this way.
