Book excerpt: Diffusion coefficients were determined for the chloroform-air system at 50°C and for the methanol-air system at 55°C by the Arnold cell technique. The effect of concentration was studied by varying the concentration of the gas stream passing across the top of the Arnold cell. The chloroform-air system exhibited a strong dependency on concentration; for this system the diffusion coefficient changed by approximately ten percent as the chloroform concentration in the gas stream was changed from zero to 56 percent. The variation of the diffusion coefficient in the methanol-air system was small; a total variation of one percent was observed over the concentration range of zero to 46 percent methanol. Since the variation of diffusion coefficient for methanol-air system was of the order of one percent, assumption of constancy of diffusion coefficient with concentration would cause little error in design calculations; hence, no correlation was attempted for the methanol-air system. However attempts were made to correlate the concentration dependency of diffusion coefficients in the chloro form-air system. It was found that a quadratic functional relationship in concentration for the diffusion coefficients was the best possible correlation. A quadratic function in weight fraction was used to account for the effect of molecular weight differences. It was concluded that the difference in molecular weight of the two diffusing species has a pronounced effect on the variation of diffusion coefficients with concentration.

Book excerpt: Diffusion calculations were performed to establish the conditions under which concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficient was important in single, two, and three phase binary alloy systems. Finite-difference solutions were obtained for each type of system using diffusion coefficient variations typical of those observed in real alloy systems. Solutions were also obtained using average diffusion coefficients determined by taking a logarithmic average of each diffusion coefficient variation considered. The constant diffusion coefficient solutions were used as reference in assessing diffusion coefficient variation effects. Calculations were performed for planar, cylindrical, and spherical geometries in order to compare the effect of diffusion coefficient variations with the effect of interface geometries. In most of the cases considered, the diffusion coefficient of the major-alloy phase was the key parameter that controlled the kinetics of interdiffusion.

Book excerpt: The transport property which is most fundamentally related to forces between unlike molecules is the ordinary diffusion due to concentration gradients. Unfortunately, this property and its dependence upon temperature have not been systematically studied experimentally, with the result that the literature does not contain the data necessary to obtain good force constants for the introduction of unlike molecuels. The present work describes an experimental method for determining diffusion coefficients, based on the variation of thermal conductivity with composition in binary mixtures which is capable of being used over a wide range of temperature. Experimental results for the systems n-butane-hydrogen, sulfur hexafluoride-hydrogen, argon-hydrogen, and argon-helium are given for a temperature range from 10°C. to 140°C.

Book excerpt: Multicomponent Diffusion discusses the multicomponent diffusion of the three phases of matter. The book is comprised of nine chapters that cover studies of multicomponent diffusion and mass transfer with an emphasis on the chemical characteristics responsible for multicomponent diffusion. Chapter 1 provides an introductory discourse about multicomponent diffusion. Chapter 2 discusses binary diffusion, while Chapter 3 covers multicomponent flux equation. The measurement of ternary diffusion and the estimation of ternary diffusion coefficients are also explained in the book. A chapter then cover ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diffusion in metals is an important phenomenon, which has many applications, for example in all kinds of steel and aluminum production, and in alloy formation (technical applications e.g. in superconductivity and semiconductor science). In this book the data on diffusion in metals are shown, both in graphs and in equations. Reliable data on diffusion in metals are required by researchers who try to make sense of results from all kinds of metallurgical experiments, and they are equally needed by theorists and computer modelers. The previous compilation dates from 1990, and measurements relying on the electron microprobe and the recent Rutherford backscattering technique were hardly taken into account there. This reference book, containing all results on self-diffusion and impurity diffusion in pure metals with an indication of their reliability, will be useful to everyone in this field for the theory, fundamental research and industrial applications covered. • Up-to-date and complete (including EPMA and RBS investigations) • Indication of reliability of the measurements • Reassessment of many early results • Data can easily be extracted from Tables and Graphs

Book excerpt: This monograph acts as a benchmark to current achievements in the field of Computer Coupling of Phase Diagrams and Thermochemistry, often called CALPHAD which is an acronym for Computer CALculation of PHAse Diagrams. It also acts as a guide to both the basic background of the subject area and the cutting edge of the topic, combining comprehensive discussions of the underlying physical principles of the CALPHAD method with detailed descriptions of their application to real complex multi-component materials. Approaches which combine both thermodynamic and kinetic models to interpret non-equilibrium phase transformations are also reviewed.

Book excerpt: This textbook provides an introduction to changes that occur in solids such as ceramics, mainly at high temperatures, which are diffusion controlled, as well as presenting research data. Such changes are related to the kinetics of various reactions such as precipitation, oxidation and phase transformations, but are also related to some mechanical changes, such as creep. The book is composed of two parts, beginning with a look at the basics of diffusion according to Fick's Laws. Solutions of Fick’s second law for constant D, diffusion in grain boundaries and dislocations are presented along with a look at the atomistic approach for the random motion of atoms. In the second part, the author discusses diffusion in several technologically important ceramics. The ceramics selected are monolithic single phase ones, including: A12O3, SiC, MgO, ZrO2 and Si3N4. Of these, three refer to oxide ceramics (alumina, magnesia and zirconia). Carbide based ceramics are represented by the technologically very important Si-carbide and nitride based ceramics are represented by Si-nitride which has been important in high temperature ceramics and gas turbine applications. The author presents a clear, concise and relatively comprehensive treatment of diffusion in ceramics for use by those at an advanced undergraduate level and beyond. It supports understanding of the basic behavior of materials and how to relate observed physical properties to microscopic understanding. The book also provides researchers with a handy collation of data relating to diffusion in ceramics and supports a fundamental understanding of atomic movements.

Book excerpt: Measurements are reported for the intensity and spectral width of light scattered by concentration fluctuations near the critical mixing point of the binary liquid mixture 3-methylpentane-nitroethane. The data were taken at the critical concentration as a function of temperature and scattering angle. The intensity data allows one to determine the susceptibility and the equilibrium correlation length as a function of temperature. (Author).
