Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of the computer-assisted and computer-based instructional methods on students achievement at computer classes and on their attitudes towards using computers. The study, which was completed in 6 weeks, were carried out with 94 sophomores studying in formal education program of Primary Teaching Department of Education Faculty at Trakya University. The participants were distributed into experimental and control groups by pre-test post-test control group design. A computer attitude scale, a level-designation test and a practice test were used to collect the data. To evaluate the data, t test was used in the program of SPSS 12.00. According to the study results, the students receiving computer-assisted instruction during their computer classes showed higher success on the practice test than the students taking classes with computer-based instructional methods. Additionally, a considerable difference has not been seen in the attitude of the students towards using computers from the other standpoints of the study. (Contains 1 figure and 4 tables.) Book excerpt: The attitudes of 90 enlisted personnel toward Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) were measured before and after they received instruction presented by CAI. The attitude pretest and posttest were administered on line. The instructional material was divided into four lesson segments, each followed by a review (test) segment. Students who failed to reach the criterion score for any review segment repeated the corresponding lesson segment. A criterion test was administered at the end of the last segment. Measures of student performance used during the course of the instruction were: (a) the total score on the criterion test (total score); (b) the number of errors made during the lesson and review segments (errors); (c) the percentage of responses made during the lesson and review segments that were incorrect (percent errors); (d) the time required to complete the lesson and review segments (time); and (e) the number of review segments failed (review failures). The attitudes pretest did not correlate significantly with any of the performance measures. A significant correlation was obtained between attitude posttest and percent errors (r = -.22). Attitude change was correlated with total score (r = .28), errors (r = -.19), and percent errors (r = -.25). Attitude and attitude change were not related to student ability. (Author).

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group study was to test theories of constructivism and motivation, along with research-based teaching practices of differentiating instruction and instructing within a child's Zone of Proximal Development, in measuring the effect of computer-aided instruction on fifth grade students' attitude and achievement in math. Students in Pennsylvania completed an attitude survey at the beginning, middle, and end of the study (Pierce, Stacey & Barkatsas, 2007). Achievement was measured by the 4Sight Math assessment (Pennsylvania State Education Association, 2007) which was given at the beginning of the study, after the first seven weeks of instruction, and then at the end of the study. Five fifth grade teachers were randomly assigned as treatment or control, indicating which instructional strategy they would implement. Treatment groups received traditional direct instruction and guided practice, and then computer-aided instruction as a supplemental math practice session. Control groups participated in traditional instruction and guided practice, which incorporated Interactive Whiteboards, with only traditional methods used for supplemental practice. Data from the attitude survey were used to indicate changes that students showed after using the computer for practice as compared to using traditional methods of practice. Data from the 4Sight Math assessments were used to determine any changes in achievement after each method was implemented. Results determined that computer-aided instruction did not have a significant effect on student achievement, but did positively impact the attitude of low-achievers.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect Flexible–Practice computer-assisted instruction software (specifically SmartMusic TM) and cognitive style (field-dependence and field-independence) had on the development of music performance skills in high school instrumental music students. Eighty high school students (N = 80) participated in the four-week study. Subjects completed the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) to assess their cognitive style. Following this, the researcher randomly assigned the population to control and treatment groups. Control group subjects practiced in a traditional rehearsal setting, while the treatment group worked with SmartMusic TM exclusively for the study period. The researcher used a pretest to establish a baseline for skills, and a posttest to assess musical performance skill development. Performance skills improved for the entire population, regardless of the instructional method used. In analyzing comparisons of total score means, subjects displayed typical field dependent and field independent characteristics in the performance of pretests and posttests for both control and treatment groups. Field dependent subjects demonstrated success in the traditional rehearsal method, while field independent subjects demonstrated success using SmartMusic TM. A factorial 2 X 2 ANOVA revealed significant interaction between CAI usage and cognitive style (p

Book excerpt: This study was initiated to determine if computer-assisted instruction contributes to an increase in mathematics performance of elementary school pupils in comparison to students who use the traditional assisted instruction method. The sample comprised 46 students who were subject to a pretest and posted after receiving CAI in mathematics. A T-test analysis of the results revealed a gain in the scores of the CAI contributes to the overall performance of students when Information Technology is integrated into the curriculum.

Book excerpt: Mathematics is essential in everyday life activities and most educational opportunities and careers require mathematical knowledge, thus it is vital that students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) receive sufficient instruction that leads to proficiency in the subject. Performing poorly in mathematics can result in dire future outcomes. This is particularly true for students with EBD, who already experience significant difficulties throughout and after their educational career. While studies have documented the academic and behavioral problems of students with EBD, not until recently have studies begun to concentrate on academic interventions that may aid in preventing some of the academic challenges these students face. It is of great importance that researchers continue to identify effective and efficient strategies of providing academic instruction, particularly in mathematics, to students with EBD. The current study examined the extent to which a technology-based intervention was effective in math instruction for students with EBD. In addition, to address the social/behavioral issues typically prevalent in students with EBD, students' task engagement was also examined and a social validity survey was used to examine their attitudes toward mathematics and technology-based instruction. A single-subject multiple-probe design across six participants was selected for this study. The computer-assisted instruction (CAI) intervention, I CAN Learn computer software program, was implemented in a high school mathematics classroom. The overall results of the study indicated that the intervention improved the adolescents' mathematics achievement, but findings revealed that the intervention was more effective with some participants than others. In addition, results indicated that the intervention may not be associated with the participants' task engagement. The study's social validity survey showed that the participants had varying attitudes toward mathematics and CAI at the end of the study.
