These properties can be largely modified by changing the alloy composition and by cold working. Si, Cu, Zn and Mg are the most commonly used alloying elements in aluminium, which have sufficient solid solubility. The as-cast microstructure of cast aluminium alloys normally displays significant segregation and supersaturation. For this, homogenization of aluminium alloys is often done to improve workability and mechanical properties. This book is based on the research about influence of Cu content, cold working and homogenization in Al-Si alloys. The effects were analysed using microstructure study, phase-property modelling, image analysis and hardness measurement. This work should help researchers and metallurgists who are working on modification of alloy properties. Also it will help students who have keen interest in study of microstructure, modelling and image analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas provides an in-depth understanding of the metallurgy and fracture behavior of aluminum-silicon casting alloys, which are used in a wide variety of automotive, aerospace, and consumer product applications. The atlas includes over 300 high-definition microfractographs of fracture profiles and fracture surfaces, accompanied with detailed descriptions and analysis of the fracture features and their significance in the selection, processing, properties, and performance of the alloy. The microfractographs are described and classified according to criteria described in detail in the introductory chapters in the book. The factors determining the fracture mechanism in these alloys, on the basis of their physical and mechanical properties and fracture mechanics, are described and analyzed. The set of micrographs in this atlas include several unique features: classification according to the alloy and its processing history, detailed analysis of selected microregions of the fracture surface, reference of the fracture features to the phase constituents of the alloy, and high resolution and high microscopic magnification of the SEM images. This book will be of great value to anyone involved in the selection, processing, application, testing, or evaluation of aluminum-silicon castings. The target audience includes metallurgists, foundry personnel, failure analysts, purchasers of castings, researchers in physical and mechanical metallurgy, students, and educators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part I discusses the development of an aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy that may combine strength, extrudability, favorable corrosion resistance with low cost and scrap compatibility. The first part of the study determined the effects of small composition, heat treatment and mechanical processing changes on the ambient temperature tensile properties of the alloy. A combination of magnesium and silicon of about 2%, 1% copper, 0.2% chromium and 0.1% vanadium can produce a T6 alloy with significant higher strength, fatigue and corrosion fatigue properties for both ingot and extrusion than those of 6061 but with only a modest increase in cost. The new alloy has been designated as AA6069. The second part of the study determined the T6 properties of 6069 alloy. The tensile test results of cold and hot extrusions of hollow, solid bars, and high pressure cylinders indicate that the T6 properties ranged from 55-70 ksi (380-490 MPa) UTS, 50-65 ksi (345-450 MPa) yield strength, and 10-18% elongation. It also appears that the fracture toughness and general corrosion resistance in saline environment are comparable or better than those of 6061 T6. Part II attempted to evaluate the formation, formability, thermal and mechanical properties of semi-solid A356, A357 and modified aluminum silicon semi-solid alloys. The semi-solid alloy microstructure was produced in this study by purely thermal treatment rather than conventional and expensive electromagnetic or mechanical stirring. Three heat-up stages in semi-solid treatment were evaluated. Stage I is related to the heating of the alloy in the solid state. Stage II is related to the eutectic reaction. Stage III is related to the heating of the semi-solid slurry. Stage II requires the longest time of the three heat-up stages due to the endothermic reaction on heating. An increase of furnace temperature can greatly reduce the time of stage II. The atmosphere (vacuum, air, argon) of the semi-solid treatment does not appear to greatly affect the T6 properties of semi-solid alloys. The microstructure and T6 properties of semi-solid A356 do not appear sensitive to the homogenization treatments before semi-solid treatment. The porosity of semi-solid ingots and pressed parts increases as the cooling rate decreases in unformed and subsequent-to-moderate pressure forming. The T6 properties basically appear sensitive to voids, with a degradation of properties as the void concentration increases. The formability of A357 may be improved as the spheroidal particle size decreases. Hence, formability may improve with decreasing ingot grain size. The mechanism of coarsening of the solid phase at isothermal temperatures is related to Ostwald ripening and/or "merging" of particles. The mechanical properties of die-casting parts show that the method of thermal treatment to produce a spheroidal microstructure is an effective method for industrial production of semi-solid aluminum-silicon alloys.

Book excerpt: This project is to investigate mechanical properties and microstructure of aluminium silicon alloy using sand casting. In this project there were separated into two parts which are foundry laboratory and inspection parameter. In foundry laboratory, a sand casting process was performed by using a diesel furnace to melt the raw material. Then, determinate an optimization of mass degassing agent added in the casting aluminium silicon alloy is to remove the hydrogen element in the casting product. After the casting process, an inspection parameter was performed to investigate the mechanical properties (tensile strength and hardness) and microstructure changed of the aluminium silicon alloys. From the observation of the result, a modified alloys exits slightly higher hardness values than non-modified. Since the coarseness of porosity is proportional to grain size, porosity in fine grained casting is finer and less harmful in fine-grained casting. In additional, shrinkage and hot cracking are usually associated with coarse-grained structure. So, a finer grain size minimizes shrinkage and the mechanical properties, such as tensile is better for fine grained casting than coarse-grained casting. The modified of the casting product by adding the degassing agent inside the casting will give better result mechanical properties in hardness test and tensile strength until an optimization point achieved where there is improvement of mechanical properties.

It provides a basic understanding of the metallurgical principles involved showing how alloys achieve their strength and how the process of welding can affect these properties. The book is intended to provide engineers with perhaps little prior understanding of metallurgy and only a brief acquaintance with the welding processes involved with a concise and effective reference to the subject. It is intended as a practical guide for the Welding Engineer and covers weldability of aluminium alloys; process descriptions, advantages, limitations, proposed weld parameters, health and safety issues; preparation for welding, quality assurance and quality control issues along with problem solving. The book includes sections on parent metal storage and preparation prior to welding. It describes the more frequently encountered processes and has recommendations on welding parameters that may be used as a starting point for the development of a viable welding procedure. Included in these chapters are hints and tips to avoid some of the pitfalls of welding these sometimes-problematic materials. The content is both descriptive and qualitative. The author has avoided the use of mathematical expressions to describe the effects of welding. This book is essential reading for welding engineers, production engineers, production managers, designers and shop-floor supervisors involved in the aluminium fabrication industry. A practical user's guide by a respected expert to all aspects of welding of aluminium Designed to be easily understood by the non-metallurgist whilst covering the most necessary metallurgical aspects Demonstrates best practice in fabricating aluminium structures

Book excerpt: Aluminium-silicon alloy has found extensive use in the automotive and aerospace industries due to its excellent castability, good thermal conductivity, low expansion coefficient and good corrosion resistance. This project was undertaken to analyze the effect of silicon morphology on machinability when turning Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy by PVD TiN coated insert. Various cutting speeds and feed rates were employed. The process was performed under dry cutting condition. Experiments revealed that surface roughness improved when cutting speed increased from 70 m/min to 250 m/min for all machining conditions. The results show that The workpiece containing Sb have the highest surface roughness value and highest cutting force in the most of cutting conditions with high ductility. The study also revealed that cutting force increased when feed rate was increased from 0.5 mm/rev to 0.15 mm/rev.The study should be especially useful to use some elements in casting process that are suitable to achieve the best surface roughness in machining process.
