Book excerpt: Abstract: The main purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral stress management intervention designed to help collegiate student-athletes understand and utilize various techniques to manage stress better and regulate arousal to achieve optimal performance. The final sample consisted of 30 participants divided into a treatment and a wait-list control group. The treatment group met for one hour per week for a five-week intervention, where they learned how to use skills such as relaxation, imagery, and self-talk. Both treatment and wait-list control group members completed measures of competitive sport anxiety, trait anxiety, life stress, coping skills, and positive and negative affect at pre, post, and follow-up testing. Competitive anxiety was measured using the Sport Competition Anxiety Test. Other measures included the Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Life Events Survey for Collegiate Athletes, the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory, and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule. MANCOVAs using life stress as the covariate were conducted for competitive anxiety, trait anxiety, coping skills, and positive and negative affect to explore differences between the groups for the entire sample across test times. The results indicated that the treatment and control groups differed significantly as expected on both competitive anxiety and negative affect at follow-up testing. The differences between groups for the remaining variables were non-significant. The implications for these results are discussed, as are suggestions for future research in this area.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship of life stress, competitive trait anxiety and competitive state anxiety, with injury occurrence in NCAA Division I athletic teams. Life stress was measured by the Life Events Survey for Collegiate Athletes. The Competitive State Anxiety Test and Marten's Sport Competition Trait Anxiety Test calculated competitive anxiety. After calculating means and standard deviations for each measure, a multiple regression was run. A two-way ANOVA was used to determine differences between sport and gender. The results of the study indicated there was no effect of gender for trait anxiety, cognitive and somatic state anxiety or gender. A significant main effect was found between gender and self-confidence. There was no effect of gender for life stress. There was no effect of sport for cognitive state anxiety, somatic state anxiety, self-confidence, or life stress. The CSAI-2 self-confidence showed no significant difference between sport. No significant relationships were noted between injury score and any of the independent variables.

Book excerpt: Sports Psychology involves the application of cognitive and behavioral principles to enhance agility, speed, and competitive results. Managing Cognitive Anxiety During Sport Performance (MASP-E) is a brief, web-based cognitive behavioral intervention that focuses on improving self-regulation skills and reducing anxiety in college athletes. The program was developed in response to a need for a relatively easy-to-administer intervention that could be used to reduce the debilitating effects that anxiety can have on sport performance. MASP-E targets collegiate athletes who may be facing the overwhelming demands and challenges of young adulthood concomitant with the pressures of performing well in college-level sport competition.
