See what's new in this edition: A comprehensive chapter on the nature, transport, and fate of major classes of contaminants in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine systems Side bars containing vignettes by leaders in the field let you benefit from the experience of diverse practitioners in the field An appendix covering European environmental regulations The authors detail key contaminants of concern, explore their fate and cycling in the biosphere, and discuss bioaccumulation and the effects of contaminants at increasing levels of ecological organization. They cover regulatory aspects of the field in separate chapters that address the technical issues of risk assessment and discuss key U.S. and European legislation in the appendices. Complete with study questions, a detailed glossary, and vignettes by various experts exploring special topics in ecotoxicology, Fundamentals of Ecotoxicology, Second Edition is an ideal introductory textbook for both undergraduate- and graduate-level courses, as well as a valuable reference for professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of the previous volumes in this series attests to the buoyancy of the current expansion of the aquaculture industry, and the importance which it is beginning to achieve in the rural economies of many developed countries as well as those less favoured. In the last volume, emphasis was given to certain specialist areas which had become more important as the industry had acquired a more sophisti cated scientific base. This emphasis is continued, but in each of the chapters of the present volume there are, we believe, many data of general significance to the farmer and the project manager as well as to the pro fessional aquaculture scientist. David Alderman, of the English Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Laboratories, at Weymouth, Dorset, provides a very detailed and deeply researched review of therapy of fish diseases. This subject is import ant in environmental and human health terms as well as in relation to the fish themselves, and is an area where all farmers, and their professional veterinary advisers, require considerable knowledge if they are to ensure the reputation of the industry and its produce.

This book was released on 2018-04-06 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biology of the Siberian sturgeon, Acipenser baerii Brandt 1869, has become a very attractive subject of investigation for biologists since the 1980s. This volume 1 is part of a two-volume set devoted to the species, the second of which focuses on farming. The present volume is divided into three parts: Biology and ecology, Biology and physiology of reproduction, and Ecophysiology, i.e. adaptation to the environment. The first part addresses a broad range of topics, such as: the ecology, including a new approach to species-specificity, a new insight on the mineralization of vertebral elements, two approaches to sex determination, transposable elements in the gonads, early ontogeny, olfaction and gustation, nutrition and swimming. The second part includes neurochemical and anatomical descriptions of the central nervous system and an updated version of the oogenesis, the characteristics of both sperm and spermatozoa, and a synthesis on gonadal steroids (synthesis, plasmatic levels and biological activities). In turn, the third part reveals how the physiology of the species changes depending on environmental factors such as oxygen, ammonia, and nitrite. Some fundamental consequences of ammonia are developed (sublethal and lethal levels, effects on gill epithelium and haematology, acid-base balance, on AA and adenyl nucleotides levels in plasma, brain and muscle tissue). In addition, the book includes two methodological chapters dealing with fish dorsal aortic cannulation and respiration physiology.
