Book excerpt: Fabrication processes in structural components can result in intended or inadvertent material behavior changes due to plastic deformation and residual stresses. In this study, the effect of a residual stress field caused by prior plastic deformation of a beam in four-point bending on the J-R curve of 12.7 mm (0.5 in.) thick specimens of HY-100 steel was investigated. Specimen blanks were deformed in four-point bending to two different levels of deflection prior to machining the starter notch. The resulting residual stress field in a companion test specimen was measured on side surfaces and through-the-thickness by a multiple exposure X-ray diffraction technique. J-testing was performed in three-point bending on undeformed specimens and the two deformed specimen sets using a modified multiple-specimen technique. A decrease in JQ and tearing modulus, T, with increasing specimen deflection was observed. The decrease in JQ was comparable to that observed previously in uniformly prestrained specimens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal forming and welding operations can introduce residual stresses into structural components. In this study the effect of prestrain on the J-resistance (J-R) curve of subthickness specimens of HY-100 steel was investigated. Prior to testing, the specimen blanks were subjected to four levels of tensile strain up to 10% prestrain. J-resistance curves were determined for unstrained material using multiple-specimen and single-specimen techniques and for the prestrain material using the single-specimen technique. In all cases a half-thickness, full-width, three-point bend specimen geometry was used. Irregularities in the J-resistance curves were correlated with distinct features on the fracture surfaces. In particular, discontinuities in the J-R curve were correlated with the location of ridges along the crack front. The J-R curves obtained after considering the effect of these discontinuities showed a definite influence of the prestraining: the fracture toughness JIc and tearing modulus T decrease with increasing levels of prestrain, with T being more sensitive to the prestrain level than JIc.

Book Synopsis The Effect of Residual Stress on Crack Propagation in HY-80 Steels by :
Download or read book The Effect of Residual Stress on Crack Propagation in HY-80 Steels written by and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were conducted to determine the effect of residual stress on the rate of crack growth in HY-80 plate steel. A residual stress field, over and above that inherently present in as-quenched and tempered material, was induced by means of welding-in of a pre-cracked patch plate into the specimen body; a cyclic load, which would induce particular values of stress intensity, was then applied. From the ensuing test results, a growth rate relation was determined and compared to a similar relation obtained from like tests performed on specimens having zero weld-induced residual stress.

Book Synopsis Residual Stresses 2016 by : Thomas M. Holden
Download or read book Residual Stresses 2016 written by Thomas M. Holden and published by Materials Research Forum LLC. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of the International Conference on Residual Stresses 10 and is devoted to the prediction/modelling, evaluation, control, and application of residual stresses in engineering materials. New developments, on stress-measurement techniques, on modelling and prediction of residual stresses and on progress made in the fundamental understanding of the relation between the state of residual stress and the material properties, are highlighted. The proceedings offer an overview of the current understanding of the role of residual stresses in materials used in wide ranging application areas.
Book Synopsis Analysis of Welded Structures by : Koichi Masubuchi
Download or read book Analysis of Welded Structures written by Koichi Masubuchi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of Welded Structures: Residual Stresses, Distortion, and their Consequences encompasses several topics related to design and fabrication of welded structures, particularly residual stresses and distortion, as well as their consequences. This book first introduces the subject by presenting the advantages and disadvantages of welded structures, as well as the historical overview of the topic and predicted trends. Then, this text considers residual stresses, heat flow, distortion, fracture toughness, and brittle and fatigue fractures of weldments. This selection concludes by discussing the effects of distortion and residual stresses on buckling strength of welded structures and effects of weld defects on service behavior. This book also provides supplementary discussions on some related and selected subjects. This text will be invaluable to metallurgists, welders, and students of metallurgy and welding.

Book Synopsis International Conference on Residual Stresses by : G. Beck
Download or read book International Conference on Residual Stresses written by G. Beck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1043 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual stresses are always introduced in materials when they are produced, or when they undergo non-uniform plastic deformation during use. The circumstances that can cause residual stresses are therefore numerous. Residual stresses exist in all materials and, depending on their distribution, can playa beneficial role (for example, compressive surface stress) or have a catastrophic effect, especially on fatigue behaviour and corrosion properties. The subject of residual stresses took form around 1970 with the development of methods to measure macroscopic deformations during the machining of materials or on an atomic scale by X-ray diffraction. These techniques have made considerable progress in the last 20 years. The meetings organized in several countries (Germany, France, Japan, etc. ) have largely contributed to this progress, aided by the numerous exchanges of information and knowledge to which they have given rise. Studies of the formation of residual stresses began more slowly, but have progressed with the emergence of increasingly realistic models of materials behaviour and with access to ever more powerful codes for numerical calculations. Two successive meetings for discussing this topic have been held in Europe. The first, held in 1982 in Nancy (France), consisted of 30 participants from 5 countries. The second was held in Linkoping (Sweden) in 1984, with 80 participants of 16 nationalities. It was decided to hold a first International Conference, ICRS, to address all aspects of the problem. Held in 1986 in Garmisch-Partenkirschen (FRG), it was an assembly of neady 300 participants from 21 countries.

Book excerpt: The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center in coop eration with the Materials Science Group of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science of Syracuse University has been conducting the Annual Sagamore Army Materials Research Conference since 1954. The specific purpose of these conferences has been to bring together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Department of Defense, the Army and the scientific community. These proceedings, entitled RESIDUAL STRESS AND STRESS RELAXATION, address the nature of residual stresses and their measurements, the sources of residual stress, stress relaxation, sub-critical crack growth in the presence of residual stress, residual stresses and properties, and research in progress. We wish to acknowledge the assistance of Mr. Dan McNaught of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center and Mr. Robert J. Sell and Helen Brown DeMascio of Syracuse University throughout the stages of the conference planning and finally the publication of the book. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Dr. E. Wright, Director of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center, is appreciated.
