Book excerpt: A parent’s ability to be autonomy supportive, specifically when communicating with their adolescent about romantic relationships and sex, is critical to promote healthy adolescent development. Previous research examining parent-adolescent communication about sex and romantic relationships has relied heavily on self-report methods, specifically from adolescents. However, this approach does not adequately capture the interdependent nature of the parent-adolescent relationship or the way they have conversations about sex and romantic relationships. In this study, 50 parent-adolescent dyads were observed having discussions about music media. Participants watched three popular music videos which contained messages of positive romantic relationships, overt sexualization, or violence in romantic relationships. Participants were asked to discuss the three videos together where they were audio and video recorded in a comfortable laboratory setting as they watched each video. The recordings were then coded for the types of questions asked during the discussion which were related to autonomy supportive behaviors. The data were modeled after the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model and subsequently analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results indicated that parents who reported higher autonomy granting in their daily life asked significantly more clarifying and redirecting questions of their adolescent during the discussions about music media. Results also indicated that when adolescents reported that their parents were high in autonomy granting overall, they had parents who were less likely to ask both redirecting questions and clarifying questions.

Book excerpt: This research measured the perceived change in communication and closeness between adolescents and their parents after four weeks in an adolescent residential chemical dependency treatment program. Each of the adolescents was involved in an adolescent residential chemical dependency treatment program and met diagnostic criteria for substance dependence prior to admittance into the treatment program. The adolescents participated in this research study by completing questionnaires before and after the treatment program. Before the treatment program, the adolescents completed questionnaires measuring their perception of their parent-adolescent communication, parent-adolescent closeness, a demographic questionnaire, and an open-ended question. During the second testing, four weeks later after the treatment program, the adolescents again completed the questionnaires measuring parent-adolescent communication and closeness and the open-ended question along with a questionnaire measuring the perceived changes in the quality of their parent-adolescent relationship after four weeks of treatment. Paired sample t-tests were used to compare pre-test responses to post-test responses. Independent samples t-tests were used to compare mean scores for those who completed the post-test with those who did not complete the post-test and to compare pre-test and post-test mean scores of the participants who completed the post-test based on their parents' attendance in the weekly multi-family therapy group. Although there was a significant loss of participants from the pre-test to the post-test, much of the data indicated a positive change after four weeks. When comparing the pre-test responses to post-test responses, significant changes were reported based on the parents attendance in the weekly multi-family therapy group. By gathering information about the changes within the parent-adolescent relationship, researchers, therapists, and social service workers will better understand the substance dependent adolescent population and their families. Additionally, areas of treatment programs that are not effective may be altered and funding sources will recognize the importance of family therapy and place more emphasis on funding family therapy within chemical dependency treatment.

Book excerpt: Purpose The major purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of self concept upon parent-adolescent communication patterns. Parental self concepts and the self concepts of their adolescent along with the adolescent's perceived quality of communication with their parents were examined to determine if (1) the parents' self concepts have a significant effect upon the adolescent's perceived communication with his parents, (2) the adolescent's self concept has a significant effect upon his perceived communication with his parents, (3) gender has a significant effect upon perceived communication patterns, and (4) the self concepts of the parents have a significant effect upon the self concept of the adolescent. Procedure The population consisted of 18 year old male and female university freshmen from two-parent, middle socioeconomic class families. A random sample of these students were assumed to be present in the lower division personal health classes at Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon. A total of 152 adolescents and their respective parents comprised the sample for the study. Names, addresses, and demographic data were obtained from an information questionnaire. The adolescents were given The Tennessee Self Concept Scale and The Parent-Adolescent Communication Inventory to obtain measurements of self concept and perceived communication with parents respectively. Parents were mailed a Letter of Explanation and The Tennessee Self Concept Scale. Sample return comprised 89.4 percent. The Total Positive Scores from the TSCS were categorized into quartiles labeled high, medium-high, medium-low, and low self concept. The data were subjected to two and three-way analysis of variance factoral designs. The factors were fixed and the cell sizes were unequal. Findings 1. Combined parental self concept seems to have had no effect upon the adolescent's perceived communication with parents. 2. The adolescent's self concept appears to have had a significant effect upon his perceived communication with parents at the .01 level. Those adolescents who had low self concept perceived communication with their parents as significantly more nonconstructive than those adolescents who had higher self concepts. 3. There was no significant difference between adolescent males and females in their perceived communication with their parents. 4. The mother's self concept appeared to significantly influence her daughter's perceived communication with her parents at the .05 level. Medium-low self concept mothers had daughters who perceived communication with their parents as significantly more non-constructive than daughters of high and medium-high self concept mothers. 5. The father's self concept did not appear to affect his daughter's perceived communication with parents. 6. Neither the mother's nor the father's self concept seemed to have any effect upon the son's perceived communication with parents. 7. Even when controlled for sex, the self concepts of the parents had no measurable effect upon their adolescent's self concept. Discussion of the findings included suggestions for study replication with design variations including controls for mother's educational level and specific changes in procedure and instruments. Consideration was given to the possibility of sex role influences upon communication patterns. Implications for education, especially in the areas of human sexuality and family living as well as for family counselors in experimental and applied areas, were presented.
