Using a quasi-experiment, there was no evidence the treatment was effective, however, a cohort design, showed the coaching model was effective at improving student achievement. When assessing teachers’ self-efficacy, there were no statistically significant changes. When interviewed, teachers felt self-efficacy had changed as a result of the coaching model. Assessing teachers' beliefs in the value of instructional coaching models in improving instruction, had no statistical significance. However, teachers felt the model was valuable in goal setting and helping pinpoint areas of weakness within teacher instruction.

Book excerpt: In this study, the researcher investigated the effects of instructional coaching on teacher self-efficacy and student achievement. Fifty-nine third-grade teachers participated. Thirty-three teachers taught at schools with a full-time instructional coach. Twenty-six participants taught at schools with no instructional coach. Teachers took a comprehensive inventory, which included the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale and the Collective Efficacy Scale. The researcher analyzed Criteria-Referenced Competency Test results from both types of schools from 2009-2013. The researcher analyzed data using the t -test, ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation. These tests revealed no significant overall difference between self-efficacy or collective efficacy within the two teacher groups. Specific differences were found within the domains of the TSES. Coaching schools experienced more growth on the CRCT over a four-year period, closing the achievement gap. The only significant positive correlation was between students who did not meet reading CRCT standards and the self-efficacy of their teachers.

The study consists of a survey to determine the overall self-efficacy of both new and veteran teachers as well as teachers who have worked with an instructional coach twenty (20) hours or more and those that have not. Teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs were measured using a survey. The survey itself is based on a larger self-efficacy scale for teachers created by Bandura (2006). Teachers’ self-efficacy was also measured in three subcategories: instruction, discipline, and the ability to create a positive climate/culture. The study is of significant interest to schools or districts planning to implement or currently implementing an instructional coaching model and any district interested in retaining new teachers. The aim of this research is to determine why new teachers are leaving the profession at such alarming rates and what we can do to help them succeed and remain in the teaching profession. By measuring a new teacher’s self-efficacy some predictive value regarding his/her success and retention may be gained. New teachers need assistance, support, and encouragement. Approximately 50% of new teachers leave the teaching profession within the first five years. Instructional coaches can assist new teachers develop a strong sense of self-efficacy. With increased self-efficacy, maybe the retention rate will go up. Student achievement is also impacted negatively by high teacher turnover. Additionally, research on the use and helpfulness of instructional coaches is sorely needed. While the use of instructional coaching has gained acceptance, the way in which instructional coaches are used varies widely. This study will help target the use of instructional coaches to where they can make the greatest impact.

To be influential in the classroom, teachers need to have strong self-efficacy, which refers to their belief that they can plan and make good judgments on best practices. Instructional leaders in a building can aid teachers and promote teacher self-efficacy by supplying resources and instructional support, while also casting vision and setting goals. However, due to the demands and time restrictions placed on administrators in schools, instructional coaches can support the instructional climate by supporting teachers and providing necessary guidance and tools to promote teacher self-efficacy. The purpose of this causal-comparative study was to determine if instructional coach self-efficacy significantly impacted teacher self-efficacy in a suburban district in a southern state. The Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) was distributed to all content-area teachers, kindergarten through twelfth grade, in a suburban district in a southern state through email; additionally, all instructional coaches in the district were invited to complete The Instructional Coaching Skills Instrument (ICSI). The sample included 100 content area teachers and 30 instructional coaches. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine if significant differences existed between the groups of the independent variable on the dependent variable. Results were not statistically significant; however, scores on TSES were consistently above average.

Beginning teachers are still learning their craft when they enter the teaching profession. Research indicates that schools are losing beginning teachers before they have adequately developed their abilities. Many systems are providing support to beginning teachers through mentoring and instructional coaching. It is essential that schools support beginning teachers as they hone their abilities to facilitate learning in their classrooms. To best meet the needs of beginning teachers, an understanding of best practices for coaching needs to be developed. -- This case study utilized the mixed-methods approach to collect and analyze data to advance an understanding of how instructional coaching impacts the facilitation of learning for beginning teachers. In order to gather data to determine the impact of instructional coaching, the following data collection tools were utilized: teacher surveys, focus groups, and individual teacher interviews. Quantitative data gathered from survey responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics, primarily frequency distributions, mean scores, and percent positive by item, element, and construct; the researcher also chose to cross tabulate specific items to better understand correlations. Qualitative data were gathered from individual interviews and compared to find areas of convergence. -- The data suggest that beginning teachers perceive that working with instructional coach mentors has a positive impact on their own self-efficacy. Additionally, beginning teacher responses indicated that more time with their coaches would be helpful, but more focused time with their coaches would also be of benefit. The findings can be used by districts to assess and inform their own mentoring and induction programs.
