Book excerpt: Excerpt from Of the Education of the Poor: Being the First Part of a Digest of the Reports of the Society for Bettering the Condition of the Poor Happily, the dark period of slavery and superstition is now past. When the light of Reformation arose in Europe, the delu sions of Po pery vanished away; and the Christian privilege of being wise to salva tion was restored to' a considerable part of the civilized world. It is impossible, however, to take a view of Christianity, without lamenting that, even in Protestant countries, only a very small part of our brethren are as yet in the entire possession of Christian instructionr And if we look be yond the pale of our own reformed church. Europe The city of Philadelphia, whose system of public schools, made free by taxation on property, went into Operation only two years before Connecti cut passed a law exempting the people from the obligation of raising a tax on property for a portion of the expense of supporting common schools (thc most disastrous law ever placed on her statute book) - has now a system of public instruction from the Primary School for children four years of age, to the Normal School in which the female teachers of all her schools can be trained, maintained with a liberality, and embracing opportunities of an extended English, cltissical, and business education, which is free to all and practically enjoyed by the children of the rich and poor - of which we have no approach in any city of our State. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of the Poor in the Eighteenth Century How the laudable custom of catechising fell into such disuse, I will not take upon me to say. It has been imputed to the unwillingness of the poor to send their children to be catechised but surely this cannot be justly urged against the teachers in Charity Schools, who ought not to have a matter of such moment left to their option. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Condition and Education of the People in England and Europe, Shewing the Results of the Primary Schools, and of the Division of Landed Property, in Foreign Countries, Vol. 2 of 2 I purpose now to give a simple statement of the really wonderful efforts which Germany, Austria, Switzer land, France, Holland, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden are making to educate their people. Whether the methods, by which any of these different countries are carrying out their great design, are in any way applica ble to this country or not, I shall not stop to consider, my desire being merely to show how different coun tries, - with different degrees of political freedom, with different political constitutions, whose people profess different religions tenets, where Protestants of different sects, Roman Catholics, and Jews are mingled up in every kind of proportion, have all managed to over come difficulties precisely similar to those, which stand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarks on Europe, Relating to Education, Peace and Labor, Vol. 8: And Their Reference to the United States The ingenious author of the daguerreotype thinks he shall succeed in rendering his plates sufficiently sensitive to arrest the exact features of moving bodies. Some power like this is needed now by the political and moral historian, if he would give the true form and impress of the times in which he lives. In Europe there seems nothing constant but change. The pamphlet named at the head of this article, written by one well known for his minute descriptions of the internal improvements in the United States, performs for the region of the Upper and Lower Rhine the office of the daguerreotype in relation to facts growing out of the inauguration of the rail-road between Strasbourg and Basle. After giving a brief history of the province of Alsace and its neighbors, it describes the public works already finished and those now in progress. In relating the particulars of the opening of the rail-road, our author takes occasion to allude to the spirit of the age in other countries, and pays a tribute to American enterprise. Next come descriptions of the fetes at Mulhouse and Strasbourg; and of the speeches and toasts at the two banquets. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most well-known and influential autobiographies ever written, The Education of Henry Adams is told in the third person, as if its author were watching his own life unwind. It begins with his early life in Quincy, the family seat outside of Boston, and soon moves on to primary school, Harvard College, and beyond. He learns about the unpredictability of politics from statesmen and diplomats, and the newest discoveries in technology, science, history, and art from some of the most important thinkers and creators of the day. In essentially every case, Adams claims, his education and upbringing let him down, leaving him in the dark. But as the historian David S. Brown puts it, this is a “charade”: The Education’s “greatest irony is its claim to telling the story of its author’s ignorance, confusion, and misdirection.” Instead, Adams uses its “vigorous prose and confident assertions” to attack “the West after 1400.” For instance, industrialization and technology make Adams wonder “whether the American people knew where they were driving.” And in one famous chapter, “The Dynamo and the Virgin,” he contrasts the rise of electricity and the power it brings with the strength and resilience of religious belief in the Middle Ages. The grandson and great-grandson of two presidents and the son of a politician and diplomat who served under Lincoln as minister to Great Britain, Adams was born into immense privilege, as he knew well: “Probably no child, born in the year, held better cards than he.” After growing up a Boston Brahmin, he worked as a journalist, historian, and professor, moving in early middle age to Washington. Although Adams distributed a privately printed edition of a hundred copies of The Education for friends and family in 1907, it wasn’t published more widely until 1918, the year he died. The book won the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 1919, and in 1999 a Modern Library panel placed it first on its list of the best nonfiction books published in the twentieth century. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
