Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the societies of the civilised world - old and new - and its two distinct and separate classes. Whilst one class accumulates in utter idleness enormous and ever increasing revenues, the other, far more numerous, labours life-long for miserable wages. One class lives without working, the other works without living or without a life worthwhile. When confronted by such a contrast, the question must at once occur to every mind: is this sad state of affairs the result of inherent necessity, inseparable from the organic conditions of human nature; or is it merely the outcome of certain historical tendencies that are destined to disappear at a later stage of social evolution? It concludes that the truth is to be found in the latter alternative: that capitalistic property, with its caste division of humanity into capitalists and labourers, is by no means the product of conditions inherent in human nature, but simply the result of powerful historical causes which will eventually disappear. A variety of facts are presented in support of this argument.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Foundations of Society Modern sociologists are still groping about for a point of departure from which to explain the complex of social phenomena. It was easier for the philosophers of the last century, for all were then agreed that Society was to be "rightly constituted by victorious Analysis." But Philosophism has had its day, and Positivism now reigns in the domain of social science. We no longer hope to reconstitute society upon a fabulous state of nature; we are seeking now to discover the natural laws of social evolution. On the one side there are the biological sociologists who would determine the principles of the new science by analogies drawn from the animal world. But it is not enough merely to substitute super-organic for organic evolution, and proceed at once to confer biological definitions upon sociological facts. True, the terminology of the science is thereby enriched and its methods somewhat improved; but the principles peculiar to social growth still remain to be discovered. There is also a group of psychological sociologists who seek the motives of collective life in the individual instincts of the man. But personal proclivities are so largely the result of historical inheritance and the social environment, that there is constant danger in pursuing this method of confusing cause with consequence, and thus becoming involved in a vicious circle. It is difficult, besides, without some guiding principle, to hit upon instincts that are especially characteristic of the human species, and at the same time sufficiently original and universal to apply to all social phenomena. Book Synopsis Social Foundations of Contemporary Economics by : Georges Sorel
Download or read book Social Foundations of Contemporary Economics written by Georges Sorel and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1984 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers of economic and political theory as well as students of economic planning will appreciate this classic, now available for the first time in English. Written eighty years ago, when Sorel became disillusioned with the official socialism of the German and French Marxist parties, this new translation presents Sorel's analysis of the rise and fall of the two great modern ideologies: socialism and liberal capitalism. At present, when the fate of both of these ideologies seems in doubt, Sorel's analysis remains particularly insightful and fresh. Sorel explains why they seem to have fallen into disrepute just as they succeeded in an almost total monopoly of power in the advanced industrial countries of the world. Sorel notes a striking parallel in the historical evolution of both bodies of thought: productivity was the foremost ideal when both movements were at their most dynamic and socially effective stage. On the other hand, they were at their most decadent state when they no longer separated themselves from politics and embraced the ideals of social unity. This work is an attack on the time-honored notion of community solidarity whose Platonic and Aristotelian versions find their contemporary counterparts in notions of natural sociability and political obligation. This work anticipates much of the thinking that lies behind Sorel's famous "Reflections on Violence "and clearly expresses the moral basis of that work, as well as present tendencies in normative and empirical political thought.
Book Synopsis Society and Economy by : Mark Granovetter
Download or read book Society and Economy written by Mark Granovetter and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-27 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Society and Economy—a work of exceptional ambition by the founder of modern economic sociology—is the first full account of Mark Granovetter’s ideas about the diverse ways in which society and economy are intertwined. The economy is not a sphere separate from other human activities, Granovetter writes. It is deeply embedded in social relations and subject to the same emotions, ideas, and constraints as religion, science, politics, or law. While some actions can be understood in traditional economic terms as people working rationally toward well-defined ends, much human behavior is harder to fit into that simple framework. Actors sometimes follow social norms with a passionate faith in their appropriateness, and at other times they conform without conscious thought. They also trust others when there is no obvious reason to do so. The power individuals wield over one another can have a major impact on economic outcomes, even when that power arises from noneconomic sources. Although people depend on social norms, culture, trust, and power to solve problems, the guidance these offer is often murky and complicated. Granovetter explores how problem solvers improvise to assemble pragmatic solutions from this multitude of principles. He draws throughout on arguments from psychology, social network studies, and long-term historical and political analysis and suggests ways to maneuver back and forth among these approaches. Underlying Granovetter’s arguments is an attempt to move beyond such simple dualisms as agency/structure to a more complex and subtle appreciation of the nuances and dynamics that drive social and economic life.
