Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principal Insect Enemies of the Sugar Beet: In the Territories Served by the Great Western Sugar Company Some damage is done by some pest somewhere every year, causing some loss to individual farmers. Fortunately, we have been free so far from pests damaging very large areas in any one year, and it is confidently hoped that this will always be the case in the territory served by this Company. Nevertheless, it seems wise to have on hand all the information necessary to enable growers to apply proper measures in case of emergency. There are available a number of bulletins and books published by the Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Colleges and others, dealing with insect pests damaging to sugar beets, but it has been thought of interest and value to beet growers to have this information presented in one book and with due regard to local conditions. While it is hoped that this Bulletin will be of valuable assistance to the grower of sugar beets by presenting the best known methods of preventing injury and controlling insects which damage this crop, it seems desirable to impress upon him the fact that there is no magical method, no patent medicine, which can be quickly and easily applied. Good farming, as taught by local experience, practiced consistently every year, will produce bigger yields of beets and minimize the damage done by insects or beet diseases. For the benefit of those wishing to study the subject more completely, scientific names of insects, other invertebrate animals, and plants discussed, have been given in the Appendix, pages 138 to 146, together with credit for determination. Free use has been made of the literature of beet insects and credit given where it has been quoted. This Bulletin has been prepared by Mr. A. C. Maxson, Entomologist in charge of the Company's Experimental Farm at Longmont, Colorado. Credit is due Miss Caroline M. Preston for reproducing the insects for the colored plates. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beet-Sugar Industry in the United States Sugar beets are no harder upon the soil than are the other crops generally grown; all require the same plant foods in slightly differ ent proportions. If not supplied with the material removed by the various crops or if the plant foods in the soil are not made available by the application of humus and by proper cultivation, the soil be comes worn and infertile, and the yields of all crops, including sugar beets, are greatly reduced. Quality of the soil - Soils vary widely in their original qualities, both physical and chemical. All agricultural soils are supplied in varying proportions with the necessary plant foods for crop pro duction. Soils that have plant food present in great abundance may be said to be rich. They are not fertile, however, unless these plant foods are in soluble form or unless they are rendered soluble as rapidly as the various materials are required by the plant in the process of growth. The quality of the soil from the standpoint of fertility may be greatly improved by proper cultivation, cr0p rota tion, and the addition of humus, as well as by the application of lime or other material that will improve its physical condition. In Special cases special treatments, such as subsoiling and drainage, are needed to make the soil highly productive. Book excerpt: Along the undisturbed shores, especially of the Mediterranean Sea and the European North Atlantic Ocean, is a quite widespread plant called Beta maritima by botanists, or more commonly sea beet. Nothing, for the inexperienced observer's eye, distinguishes it from surrounding wild vegetation. Despite its inconspicuous and nearly invisible flowers, the plant has had and will have invaluable economic and scientific importance. Indeed, according to Linnè, it is considered "the progenitor of the beet crops possibly born from Beta maritima in some foreign country". Recent molecular research confirmed this lineage. Selection applied after domestication has created many cultivated types with different destinations. The wild plant always has been harvested and used both for food and as a medicinal herb. Sea beet crosses easily with the cultivated types. This facilitates the transmission of genetic traits lost during domestication, which selection processes aimed only at features immediately useful to farmers and consumers may have depleted. Indeed, as with several crop wild relatives, Beta maritima has been successfully used to improve cultivated beet’s genetic resistances against many diseases and pests. In fact, sugar beet cultivation currently would be impossible in many countries without the recovery of traits preserved in the wild germplasm. Dr. Enrico Biancardi graduated from Bologna University. From 1977 until 2009, he was involved in sugar beet breeding activity by the Istituto Sperimentale per le Colture Industriali (ISCI) formerly Stazione Sperimentale di Bieticoltura (Rovigo, Italy), where he released rhizomania and cercospora resistant germplasm and collected seeds of Mediterranean sea beet populations as a genetic resource for breeding and ex situ conservation. Retired since 2009, he still collaborates with several working breeders, in particular, at the USDA Agricultural Research Stations, at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science (CAAS), and at the Athens University (AUA). He has edited books, books chapters and authored more than 150 papers. Dr. Lee Panella is a plant breeder and geneticist with the USDA-ARS at Fort Collins, Colorado. He earned his B.S. in Crop and Soil Science from Michigan State University, an M.S. in Plant Breeding from Texas A&M University, and a Ph.D. in genetics from the University of California at Davis. His research focus is developing disease resistant germplasm using sugar beet wild relatives. He is chairman of the USDA-ARS Sugar Beet Crop Germplasm Committee and has collected and worked extensively with sea beet. Dr. Robert T. Lewellen was raised on a ranch in Eastern Oregon and obtained a B.S. in Crop Science from Oregon State University followed by a Ph.D. from Montana State University in Genetics. From 1966 to 2008 he was a research geneticist for the USDA-ARS at Salinas, California, where he studied the genetics of sugar beet and as a plant breeder, often used sea beet as a genetic source to produce many pest and disease resistant sugar beet germplasm and parental lines, while authoring more than 100 publications.
