Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economic Effects of Fracture in the United States, Vol. 1: A Synopsis of the September 30, 1982 Report to Nbs by Battelle Columbus Laboratories The costs are primarily associated with the transportation and construction industries: motor vehicles, aircraft, and the building of homes and non-residential construction. Metal structures contributed substantially larger costs than non-metal structures. A greater percentage of these costs were expended on fracture prevention than on fracture occurrence. The study concluded that substantial material, transportation, and capital investment costs could be saved if technology transfer, combined with research and development, succeeded in reducing the factors of uncertainty related to structural design. Equally safe or safer structures could be produced with substantial cost savings in material, transportation, and capital investment. This could be done by reducing the uncertainty currently related to structural design through better predictions of structural performance from materials properties, better process and quality control and in-service flaw monitoring, and less materials variability. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Though ours is an age of high technology, the essence of what engineering is and what engineers do is not common knowledge. Even the most elementary of principles upon which great bridges, jumbo jets, or super computers are built are alien concepts to many. This is so in part because engineering as a human endeavor is not yet integrated into our culture and intellectual tradition. And while educators are currently wrestling with the problem of introducing technology into conventional academic curricula, thus better preparing today’s students for life in a world increasingly technological, there is as yet no consensus as to how technological literacy can best be achieved. " I believe, and I argue in this essay, that the ideas of engineering are in fact in our bones and part of our human nature and experience. Furthermore, I believe that an understanding and an appreciation of engineers and engineering can be gotten without an engineering or technical education. Thus I hope that the technologically uninitiated will come to read what I have written as an introduction to technology. Indeed, this book is my answer to the questions 'What is engineering?' and 'What do engineers do?'" - Henry Petroski, To Engineer is Human

Book excerpt: This book describes how reliability can be embedded into the product development using a design methodology that uses parametric accelerated lifecycle testing (ALT) . The book has these features: • A new reliability methodology, based on inferential statistics, that can determine whether the reliability of a mechanical/civil system is achieved. • A unique reliability methodology to prevent reliability disasters in new mechanical products in the field, e.g., automobiles and airplanes. • Robust design methodology of mechanical/civil product to withstand a variety of loads. • Explanation of an alternative experimental Taguchi methodology. • Discussion of how parametric ALT can also be used to predict product reliability—lifetime and failure rate. • Detailed case studies that demonstrate parametric ALT methodology. This book will be useful for senior-level undergraduate and graduate students, professional engineers, college and university-level lecturers, researchers, and design managers in mechanical and civil engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue and Durability of Structural Materials explains how mechanical material behavior relates to the design of structural machine components. The major emphasis is on fatigue and failure behavior using engineering models that have been developed to predict, in advance of service, acceptable fatigue and other durability-related lifetimes. The book covers broad classes of materials used for high-performance structural applications such as aerospace components, automobiles, and power generation systems. Coverage focuses on metallic materials but also addresses unique capabilities of important nonmetals. The concepts are applied to behavior at room or ambient temperatures; a planned second volume will address behavior at higher-temperatures. The volume is a repository of the most significant contributions by the authors to the art and science of material and structural durability over the past half century. During their careers, including 40 years of direct collaboration, they have developed a host of durability models that are based on sound physical and engineering principles. Yet, the models and interpretation of behavior have a unique simplicity that is appreciated by the practicing engineer as well as the beginning student. In addition to their own pioneering work, the authors also present the work of numerous others who have provided useful results that have moved progress in these fields. This book will be of immense value to practicing mechanical and materials engineers and designers charged with producing structural components with adequate durability. The coverage is appropriate for a range of technical levels from undergraduate engineering students through material behavior researchers and model developers. It will be of interest to personnel in the automotive and off-highway vehicle manufacturing industry, the aeronautical industry, space propulsion and the power generation/conversion industry, the electric power industry, the machine tool industry, and any industry associated with the design and manufacturing of mechanical equipment subject to cyclic loads.
