Aurelius Olympius Nemesianus: With Introduction, Commentary, and Appendix Almost all authorities give Calpurnius the praenomen Titus. The praenomen Caius, however, is found in VR1.ra and in one Florentine MS., while several MSS. give no praenomen. Glaeser says that a Vienna MS. (n. 286) has at the beginning Incipiunt buccolica Theocriti Calphurnii siculi P. cl., and at the end Expliciunt buccolicon Theocriti Calfurnii poetae siculi, whence he conjectures that the praenomen Titus originated from the name Theocritus, applied to Calpurnius on account of the style of his poetry. He also thinks that the praenomen Caius originated from an erroneous repetition of the beginning of the name Calpurnius, and concludes that we should follow those MSS. which give no praenomen. Wernsdorf says that Gyraldus, Fabricius, and Burmann give our poet the praenomen Junius, or Julius, doubtless identifying him with the Junius, or Julius Calpurnius, qui ad memoriam dictabat, mentioned by Vopiscus, in his life of Carus, chapter 8. On this subject, and also on the meaning of Siculus, as applied to Calpurnius, see page 9. Sarpius, with little probability, as Haupt shows, attributes the poems to one Calpurnius Serranus, in the time of Claudius. Book excerpt: The legendary overland silk road was not the only way to reach Asia for ancient travelers from the Mediterranean. During the Roman Empire’s heyday, equally important maritime routes reached from the Egyptian Red Sea across the Indian Ocean. The ancient city of Berenike, located approximately 500 miles south of today’s Suez Canal, was a significant port among these conduits. In this book, Steven E. Sidebotham, the archaeologist who excavated Berenike, uncovers the role the city played in the regional, local, and “global” economies during the eight centuries of its existence. Sidebotham analyzes many of the artifacts, botanical and faunal remains, and hundreds of the texts he and his team found in excavations, providing a profoundly intimate glimpse of the people who lived, worked, and died in this emporium between the classical Mediterranean world and Asia.
