Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oecumenical Documents of the Faith: The Creed of Nicaea, Three Epistles of Cyril, the Tome of Leo, the Chalcedonian Definition A Creed is tho outward verbal expression of an inwardly existing Faith, and Faith is a spiritual energy which sympathetically welcomes a revealed Truth. The revelation of tho Truth in the Person of the Incarnate Son of God is a historic fact. Its firm outlines have been preserved in the Creeds of the Church; its limitless embrace is beyond the powers of fallen man; yet each age of reverent scrutiny on the part of the regenerate has added something to the apprehension of its breadth and length and depth and height. The aim of the present volume is more simple. It is to present the original texts of the outlines of the Church's teaching on the Doctrines of the Holy Trinity and of the Incarnation, so far as they were denned by the First Four Oecumenical Councils, and to endeavour to elucidate them by means of historical and dogmatic annotations. Challenges accepted definitions of patristics and the patristic period – in particular questioning the Western framework in which the field has traditionally been constructed Includes the work of authors who wrote in languages other than Latin and Greek, including those within the Coptic, Armenian, Syriac, and Arabic Christian traditions Examines the reception history of prominent as well as lesser-known figures, debating the role of each, and exploring why many have undergone periods of revived interest Offers synthetic accounts of a number of topics central to patristic studies, including scripture, scholasticism, and the Reformation Demonstrates the continuing role of these writings in enriching and inspiring our understanding of Christianity

Book Synopsis Recovering Historical Christology for Today's Church by : Marvin Jones
Download or read book Recovering Historical Christology for Today's Church written by Marvin Jones and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-20 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the basic tenets of Christology that a college student would encounter in a basic Christology class. The book is written in three different sections. The first section focuses upon primary Christological passages, which include a limited survey of Christology in the New Testament. The second section reviews the Christological Councils, limited to the first four ecumenical councils (i.e., Nicea, Constantinople, Ephesus, and Chalcedon). The third section deals with the application of Christology, correlating the biblical witness with the councils, preaching Christology to a contemporary church, and summarizing the Christological content for the contemporary church. The book is a textbook for an introductory Christology class. As such, it will meet the needs of professors who are trying to find an introductory work that surveys the many aspects of teaching Christology. It will also be a valuable tool for pastors as an easy-to-read reference for sermon building and Sunday school lessons, and youth directors as an accessible tool to teach basic foundational Christological truths to their youth group.

Book Synopsis Jesus Christ Today by : Stuart G. Hall
Download or read book Jesus Christ Today written by Stuart G. Hall and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-02-26 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus of Nazareth is a perennial subject of interest, and one of the most influential people that ever lived. The religious movement which flowed from him produced the Christian Church in all its various manifestations. Christian believers have in common a regard for Jesus as Lord and God, in some way a bodily appearance revealing the Father of the universe. Christian thinkers down the centuries have continually tried to define and explain who Jesus was and is. This book draws together some of the best modern thinking about the biblical evidence, the beliefs of the first few centuries when “orthodoxy” was being defined, the past two centuries when churchmen have responded to the challenge of modern rationalism, and some of the reactions to Jesus in the world-wide spread of modern Christianity and in Islam. It concludes with an attempt at a simple formula which might provoke and sustain faith in Jesus Christ in the most recent intellectual environment.
