Book excerpt: This translation by Sarah Austin (1793-1867) of German historian Leopold von Ranke's work contributed significantly to early modern history and historiography. By some accounts 'the best living translator' of her time, Austin was a member of social circles that included Jeremy Bentham and J. S. Mill. Ranke (1795-1886) worked for most of his life at the University of Berlin, writing several histories covering the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries. Austin's translation recognises Ranke's importance to Western historiography: his methodology stressed the centrality of using primary sources and of the historian's objectivity. Ranke's history engages with a much wider area than his title suggests; indeed, his subject is 'the struggle between Catholicism and Protestantism, between authority and innovation', as Austin writes. Volume 1 traces the impact and history of the popes from their 'epochs' to the sixteenth century. These volumes will be of interest to early modern historians and historiographers alike.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ecclesiastical and Political History of the Popes of Rome During the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, Vol. 2 of 2 Like travellers who quit some range of lofty mountains commanding a wide and magnificent prospect, to enter a valley which circumscribes their view within its narrow boundaries, we pass from the survey of the great events of the world's history in which the papacy played so important a part, to the observation of the occurrences peculiar to the States of the Church. The States of the Church first attained to their complete constitution in the times of Urban VIII. At this epoch let us begin their history. Download or read book The Papacy in the Modern World written by Frank J. Coppa and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2014-06-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 2013, millions of people sat glued to news channels and live Internet feeds, waiting to see white smoke rise from the Sistine Chapel, signaling the election of the new pope. For two millennia, the papacy, leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has played a fundamentally important role in European history and world affairs. Transcending the religious realm, it has influenced ideological, philosophical, social, and political developments, as well as international relations. Considering the broad role of the papacy from the end of the eighteenth century to the present, this original history explores the reactions and responses it has evoked and its confrontation with and accommodation of the modern world. Frank J. Coppa describes the triumphs, controversies, and failures of the popes over the past two hundred years—including Pius IX, who was criticized for his campaign against Italian unification and his proclamation of papal infallibility; Pius XII, denounced for his silence during the Holocaust and impartiality during World War II; and John XXIII, who was praised for his call to update the Church and for convoking the Second Vatican Council. Examining a wide variety of sources, some only recently made available by the Vatican archives, The Papacy in the Modern World sheds new light on this institution and offers valuable insights into events previously shrouded in mystery.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ecclesiastical and Political History of the Popes of Rome, Vol. 1 of 3 But besides these duties towards the public, every translator is bound to fidelity by a duty which he owes to his author; for if there be any thing which may be truly called a man's own, it is surely the sum of his opinions ou' a most momentous and difficult subject, arrived at by years of patient toil and mature reflection, weighed with consummate impartiality, and enounced with historical calmness. Unfortunately, however, such is the tendency to postpone the real and permanent interest which all men have in truth and charity, and the most sacred rights of individuals, to the pursuit of some momentary and illusory party advantage, that the French translation is not only full of particular inaccuracies arising from ignorance or carelessness, but is infected with the sectarian spirit from which the original is so remarkably and so laudably exempt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ecclesiastical and Political History of the Popes of Rome, Vol. 2 of 3: During the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries One of the most difficult problems presented to the historian of a nation or other political com munity is, to apprehend correctly the connection of its particular with its general relations. It is true that the peculiarities in the life of a nation, like those in the life of an individual, are determined by causes inherent in its original cha racter, and therefore retain through every age a cer tain uniformity. It is, however, equally true that every nation is continually influenced by general causes, which powerfully affect its progress.
