Book excerpt: North America has had a 400-year love affair with the brook trout - Salvelinus fontinalis- its great native trout. In this newly revised and updated volume, Nick Karas offers the only major profile of this most beautiful gamefish. Brook Trout is a thorough look at the history, biology, and angling possibilities of the fish most anglers affectionately call the brookie. Through the eyes of a trained ichthyologist, Karas explores the brook trout's biology and the events that led to its evolution and distribution. He unravels the controversies surrounding the two largest brook trout ever taken. But the core of this book is the fishery: its past status, current condition, and future. And because the history of brook trout fishing is inseparable from the history of American fishing, Karas follows the development of the rods, reels, lines, lures and flies that evolved as anglers pursued their fascination with this great game fish. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Our books offer both practical advice on tackle, techniques, knots, and more, as well as lyrical prose on fishing for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, baitfish, catfish, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book excerpt: Brook trout are native in the Eastern United States and were the most important fly rod gamefish for early anglers, until they were supplanted by nonnative brown and rainbow trout. Today, brook trout are indicators of cold, clean water and healthy ecosystems, and in almost every place they are found, anglers will also find wild country and relative solitude. They have been introduced throughout the Rocky Mountains, where they grow large and abundant. This is the most complete guide to brook trout ever written and not only includes information on tackle and techniques but important conservation information and an in-depth section on top brook trout destinations, from Maine to Argentina. With a foreword by Ted Williams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) is an iconic species among fly anglers and cold-water conservationists in eastern North America. This fish registers as a powerful symbol for its beauty and its imagery in art and literature. Its presence also tells us a great deal about the health of the larger environment. When an angler has a brook trout in hand, there is confidence that the water is close to pristine. Besides being an important indicator species, the brook trout, with its gold and reddish markings and its camouflaged green and black back, is one of the most beautiful freshwater fish in North America. And beyond the beauty of the fish itself, the environment in which it is found is also part of its past and present appeal. To fish for brook trout is often to fish in the last remote and rugged landscapes in the East, “fishscapes” that have not been polluted by stocking trucks that dump nonnative brown and rainbow trout in most of the East’s accessible cold waterways. Searching for Home Waters is part science, part environmental history, and part personal journey of the author, Michael K. Steinberg, and those he interviewed during his travels. The work takes a broad perspective that examines the status of brook trout in the eastern United States, employing a “landscape” approach. In other words, brook trout do not exist in a vacuum; they are impacted by logging, agriculture, fishing policies, suburban development, mining, air pollution, and climate change. Thus, while the book focuses specifically on the status and management of the brook trout—from Georgia to Labrador—it also tells the larger story of the status of the eastern environment. As a “pilgrimage,” this book is also a journey of the heart and contains Steinberg’s personal reflections on his relationship with the brook trout and its geography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brook trout of Great Smoky Mountains National Park are relatively scarce and are found only in remote, headwater streams. They are also small and short-lived. Males outnumber females, especially among sexually mature fish. The fecundity is lower than in fish of comparable size in Wisconsin and Canadian waters. Under present conditions, any increase in exploitation of the brook trout in the Park or damaging alteration of the habitat might have serious consequences for the remanent populations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Downstream: Reflections on Brook Trout, Fly Fishing, and the Waters of Appalachia is a mosaic combining nature writing, fly-fishing narrative, memoir, and philosophical and spiritual inquiry. Fly-fishing narratives and fragments of memoir provide the narrative arc for exploring relationships between humans and rivers, and the ways in which our attitudes and philosophies impact our practices and the waters we depend on for life. The authors guide their readers on a journey from Maine's Androscoggin watershed--once one of the ten filthiest rivers in the United States and now home to some of the best wild brook trout fishing in the United States--southward through Kentucky into Tennessee and North Carolina, where a native southern strain of brook trout struggles to survive. Like the rivers themselves, the chapters alternate between flowing narratives and the stiller waters that settle out above dams. While each stone in this mosaic is worth a close look in its own right, seen from a distance the book offers a broader picture of the cold mountain waters of Appalachia and their famous native fish: the brook trout.

Book excerpt: Trout anglers, as a group, are deeply polarized. The author travels to the famed Driftless Area in the rural southwestern corner of Wisconsin to fish its spring creeks for brown trout and explore the science, culture and history of social divides. "Lost in the Driftless" looks at the role of regulations, the impacts of destination fisheries, the role of social science in fisheries management, and creek and wild trout restoration. The author's guide is a well-known, self-described Wisconsin "trout regulations protester." Author documents his fight to bring the "locals" back to trout fishing.
