Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rockford College Annual, 1908 Since 1890, with the exception of one year spent in study, Miss Gulliver had been Head of the Department of Philosophy and Biblical Literature in the Seminary and in the College, and during the prolonged illness of Miss Emily K. Reynolds, she had been Acting President. Miss Gulliver is the daughter of the Rev. John Putnam Gulliver, D. D., LL. D President of Knox College from. 1868 to 1872, and Stone Professor of the Relations of Christianity and Science in Andover Theological Seminary from 1879 until his death in 1894. Dr. Gulliver was perhaps best known as a reform-er, a close personal friend of Governor Buckingham, the war governor of Connecticut. Before the founding of any of the prominent Colleges for women, he was an earnest advocate of the higher education of women. The devotion of Dr. Gulliver to the cause of education has been continued in the work of his daughter. Miss Gulliver received her first degree as a member of the first class of Smith College, 1879. After some years spent in study, largely under the direction of her father, she received from Smith College in 1888 the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. From 1890 to 1892 she held the position of Head of the Department of Philosophy and Biblical Literature in Rockford Semi nary. The following year she spent in Germany doing advanced work in philosophy at the University of Leipsic under the direction of Professor Wilhelm Wundt. From that time Miss Gulliver has been Head of the Department of Philosophy and Biblical Literature in Rockford College, and, much to the satisfaction of all, continues her work in ethics and Bible. Book excerpt: During the early decades of the 20th century, communication by postcard was an inexpensive and popular means of exchanging travel stories, news, and gossip across the United States. For just a few cents each, postcards connected friends and family separated by hundreds of miles. Rockford: 1900-World War I, with a collection of nearly 240 vintage postcard images, captures the details of this dynamic era and documents the Forest City's coming of age.Inside are views of Rockford's bustling downtown, including rare glimpses of long-gone landmarks like the Grand Opera House and Orpheum Theater. Witness history in the making with Rockford's first recorded airplane flights in 1911 and experience U.S. Army "doughboy" life at Rockford's Camp Grant. Be there for Teddy Roosevelt's historic visits to Rockford, and marvel at the intrepid companies that turned Rockford into a national manufacturing power.

Excerpt: ... private houses, its palace, shrine, and many interesting relics of primeval civilization. In the estimation of an English archaeologist, it was the most perfect example yet discovered of a small Mycenaean town, and was creditable not only to Miss Boyd, but to the intellectual culture which she had received at the College. Two years later, Miss Boyd was again granted leave of absence to continue her excavations in Crete, with the assistance of Miss Edith H. Hall, of the Class of 1899. In a land where civic restraints were comparatively weak, these two women, with no protection by resident police or soldiers, through the simple force of their scholarship and their personal character, were able to direct from eighty to one hundred men without molestation or insubordination, and to bring to light many valuable illustrations of ancient life and art. Duplicates of some of the prehistoric pottery which Miss Boyd discovered at Gournia were given to the College, and an illustrated volume containing an account of her work was published by the Trustees. This year, the Smith College Association for Christian Work printed for the first time an annual report of its operations, showing that $2053.23 had been raised by the students for charitable purposes. Out of this sum aid had been given to College Settlements Associations; to the Needlework Guild; to the Carlisle Indian School; to the relief work in China; to the American College for Women in Madrid; to New York City Missions; to the support of a medical missionary in India, of a nurse in Shanghai, and of Bible women in Madras and Ceylon. The association had provided also teachers for the home-culture clubs and mission schools in the city, given remunerative work for needy students, and had directed...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Jefferson College, Vol. 1 Character of First Western Ministers - When and by whom "Log Cabin" Schools begun - Mr. Dod's School on Ten-mile and in Washington - Mr. Smith's School at Buffalo - Dr. M'Millan's School at Chartiers. The early history of most nations, ancient or modern, is obscured and deformed by incredible traditions and monstrous legends. The laborious researches of Niebuhr, Arnold, and others, have contributed much to separate the precious from the vile, and to ascertain, with some precision, where true history begins. The American people have this great advantage, in regard to the story of their rise and progress, that no fabulous period belongs to the outset of their history. This is especially true in respect to that portion of them who first sought homes and formed settlements in the eastern part of the Valley of the Mississippi. Though much obscurity rests upon the unimportant details of the first years of trial and sorrow, through which these who succeeded the hunters, trappers and Indians traders of Western Pennsylvania, were compelled to pass, the prominent features of the men of those times, and of the measures they pursued for elevating their physical, intellectual and moral condition, are now well ascertained, and rest on no uncertain tradition. Book Synopsis Citizen by : Louise W. Knight

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Addams was the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Now Citizen, Louise W. Knight's masterful biography, reveals Addams's early development as a political activist and social philosopher. In this book we observe a powerful mind grappling with the radical ideas of her age, most notably the ever-changing meanings of democracy. Citizen covers the first half of Addams's life, from 1860 to 1899. Knight recounts how Addams, a child of a wealthy family in rural northern Illinois, longed for a life of larger purpose. She broadened her horizons through education, reading, and travel, and, after receiving an inheritance upon her father's death, moved to Chicago in 1889 to co-found Hull House, the city's first settlement house. Citizen shows vividly what the settlement house actually was—a neighborhood center for education and social gatherings—and describes how Addams learned of the abject working conditions in American factories, the unchecked power wielded by employers, the impact of corrupt local politics on city services, and the intolerable limits placed on women by their lack of voting rights. These experiences, Knight makes clear, transformed Addams. Always a believer in democracy as an abstraction, Addams came to understand that this national ideal was also a life philosophy and a mandate for civic activism by all. As her story unfolds, Knight astutely captures the enigmatic Addams's compassionate personality as well as her flawed human side. Written in a strong narrative voice, Citizen is an insightful portrait of the formative years of a great American leader. “Knight’s decision to focus on Addams’s early years is a stroke of genius. We know a great deal about Jane Addams the public figure. We know relatively little about how she made the transition from the 19th century to the 20th. In Knight’s book, Jane Addams comes to life. . . . Citizen is written neither to make money nor to gain academic tenure; it is a gift, meant to enlighten and improve. Jane Addams would have understood.”—Alan Wolfe, New York Times Book Review “My only complaint about the book is that there wasn’t more of it. . . . Knight honors Addams as an American original.”—Kathleen Dalton, Chicago Tribune
