Book excerpt: Union Colony was a 19th-century private enterprise formed to promote agricultural settlements in the South Platte River Valley in the Colorado Territory. Organization of the colony began in October 1869 by Nathan Meeker in order to establish a religiously-oriented utopian community of "high moral standards." Colony was founded in March 1870 at the site of present-day Greeley, Colorado. Union Colony was financially backed and promoted by New York Tribune editor, Horace Greeley, a prominent advocate of the settlement of the American West. The homesteaded colony greatly advanced irrigation usage in present-day northern Colorado, demonstrating the viability of cultivation at a time when agriculture was emerging as a rival to mining as the principle basis for the territorial economy.

The dry, arid plains were a pass-through to most, but a few hardy souls saw potential in the region. They faced the harshest conditions; howling winds, little rainfall, intense heat followed by bone-chilling cold, isolation, and hostile Native American tribes were constant threats to survival. The pioneers of Morgan County were men and women of vision, perseverance, and inner strength. They were problem solvers who dug reservoirs and irrigation canals, built roads and railroads, and created an economy out of what others refused to see. Today, Morgan County is a place of an active agricultural lifestyle, supported by the businesses in the area. Its rich cultural diversity encompasses residents whose countries of origin span the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the 1800s, explorers braved brutal weather and hostile enemies, trekking through the towering mountains and fertile valleys on the ragged edge of civilization. These early pioneers built stockades, trading posts, military camps and miniature citadels that would shape the state of Colorado for generations to come. As the settlers struggled to survive desperate times, economic depressions and bloody wars, some of these historic outposts would become Colorado's cities, schools, hospitals and museums, while others would sink back into the mud from which they came. Join author Jolie Anderson Gallagher as she chronicles the stories of the forts and the early explorers, fur trappers, soldiers and wives who constructed and occupied them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraits of the Past offers a collection of local history stories originally published in the Fort Morgan Times between 2014 and 2019. Researched and written by a small group calling themselves "The Community History Writers", these stories detail the lives and events of people living in, and beyond, Morgan County on the eastern plains of Colorado, from the late 1880's up to the present day.Although Fort Morgan's founders envisioned an up-standing community made up of families who were hard-working, religious, and law-abiding, the people who settled there didn't always live up to these high expectations. So the town and its surrounding areas had its share of "mischief and mayhem", including bank robberies, stills, illegal slot machines, and grisly murders.Shiver as you read tales of local hauntings and the "Legend of Rock Creek". Meet the immigrants who moved to the area and the industries they work for and how these businesses have developed over time. Learn what a day in a one-room schoolhouse was like and how Christmas was celebrated by different cultures. Relive the hardships endured during times of drought, fierce blizzards, and the miseries of the Spanish flu. Celebrate victories such as the stories of how a small group of people took on the Federal government and won and how the local DAR organization supported a French orphan during World War I.Stare into the unwavering eyes of the Portraits of the Past and find your common humanity in the stories they recount.
