Through it, we see Karl as never before: a devoted father and husband, a prankster who loved a party, a dreadful procrastinator, freeloader, and man of wild enthusiasms-one of which would almost destroy his marriage. An epic narrative that stretches over decades to recount Karl and Jenny's story against the backdrop of Europe's Nineteenth Century, LOVE AND CAPITAL is a surprising and magisterial account of romance and revolution-and of one of the great love stories of all time.

Book Synopsis Then Comes Marriage (Love in the Regency Book 3) by : Kasey Michaels
Download or read book Then Comes Marriage (Love in the Regency Book 3) written by Kasey Michaels and published by Kasey Michaels. This book was released on with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling romance author Kasey Michaels comes the third in her LOVE IN THE REGENCY series. There are not many men who can say they attended their own funeral, but Brady James, Earl of Singleton is no ordinary man. He’s also, happily, not a dead man, which he is certain was the object of the trio of scoundrels who had lately tied him up and tossed him headfirst into the Thames. Of course, there’s also the matter of why he’d been skulking about the bowels of London after midnight, and her name is Regina Bliss. Mysterious, with an ability to lie that would shame the devil himself, Regina is a recent rescue from the London streets, and Brady has taken it into his head to find out where the dratted girl came from… and why she bothers him so. To accomplish his aim, Brady needs to return to London, but certainly not as himself (that would be awkward), and he needs the irritating Miss Bliss to come with him. What to do? Why, he could pretend to be his own heir — a totally worthless, chuckleheaded moron of a dandy he’d rather die (again) to keep from the earldom. It could work. It should work. If only he could get past his attraction for Miss Bliss as she, horror of horrors, teaches him how to play the fop. **For a limited time, get two free books from Kasey > bit.ly/kaseymichaels (just copy and paste into your browser)**

Book excerpt: Alaska, 2018, and Mike is a long way from home, nursing a wrecked knee and an unspoken grief, striking out into real estate and parenting his partner’s son. London, 1978, and Simon is an Australian fish out of water navigating adolescence during the Winter of Discontent, and drawn to an eccentric impresario next door. Washington, DC, 1928, and a retired US senator is interviewed about his time in Russia in 1916, and his mission to save a young heir to an empire. Vienna, 1809, and an Irish teenager on the run from the law takes refuge among composers as Napoleon besieges and shells the city. Hong Kong, 2019, and estranged brothers Mike and Simon reunite in midlife to face the secrets of the past, and reconnect in more ways than one. Empires rise and fall, human lives play out, encounters, collisions and connections occur more than we can ever know – and yet, the unexpected can still happen. Endlessly compelling and inventive, Empires is a masterful novel in five parts with boys and men at its heart. Spanning centuries and crossing continents, it explores the empires we build, the way we see ourselves, the narratives we construct and the interconnectedness of all things. This is Nick Earls at his finest.
Book Synopsis The Case for Women in Medieval Culture by : Alcuin Blamires
Download or read book The Case for Women in Medieval Culture written by Alcuin Blamires and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1997-05-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Misogyny is of course not the whole story of medieval discourse on women: medieval culture also envisaged a case for women. But hitherto studies of profeminine attitudes in that periods culture have tended to concentrate on courtly literature or on female visionary writings or on attempts to transcend misogyny by major authors such as Christine de Pizan and Chaucer. This book sets out to demonstrate something different: that there existed from early in the Middle Ages a corpus of substantial traditions in defence of women, on which the more familiar authors drew, and that this corpus itself consolidated strands of profeminine thought that had been present as far back as the patristic literature of the fourth century. The Case for Women surveys extant writings formally defending women in the Middle Ages; breaks new ground by identifying a source for profeminine argument in biblical apocrypha; offers a series of explorations of the background and circulation of central arguments on behalf of women; and seeks to situate relevant texts by Christine de Pizan, Chaucer, Abelard, and Hrotsvitha in relation to these arguments. Topics covered range from the privileges of women, and pro-Eve polemic, to the social and moral strengths attributed to women, and to the powerful modelsfrequently disruptive of patriarchal complacencypresented by Old and New Testament women. The contribution made by these emphases (which are not to be confused with feminism in a modern sense) to medieval constructions of gender is throughout critically assessed, and the book concludes by asking how far defenders were controlled by, or able to query, assumptions about what was natural (and therefore imagined inflexible) in gender theory.

Book Synopsis Godwine Kingmaker by : Mercedes Rochelle
Download or read book Godwine Kingmaker written by Mercedes Rochelle and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harold Godwineson, the Last Anglo-Saxon King, owed everything to his father. Who was this Godwine, first Earl of Wessex and known as the Kingmaker? Was he an unscrupulous schemer, using King and Witan to gain power? Or was he the greatest of all Saxon Earls, protector of the English against the hated Normans? The answer depends on who you ask. He was befriended by the Danes, raised up by Canute the Great, given an Earldom and a wife from the highest Danish ranks. He sired nine children, among them four Earls, a Queen and a future King. Along with his power came a struggle to keep his enemies at bay, and Godwine's best efforts were brought down by the misdeeds of his eldest son Swegn. Although he became father-in-law to a reluctant Edward the Confessor, his fortunes dwindled as the Normans gained prominence at court. Driven into exile, Godwine regathered his forces and came back even stronger, only to discover that his second son Harold was destined to surpass him in renown and glory.
