Book excerpt: The meetings of the most significant archaeological association of Europe, the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA), provide each year an outstanding opportunity for dialogues between scholars of various countries and backgrounds. At the 16th meeting, held in September 2010 in The Hague, The Netherlands, Volker Heyd, Gabriella Kulcsár and Vajk Szeverényi organized a full-day conference session focusing on interregional contacts and social, economic and cultural change in the third millennium BC in and around the Carpathian Basin. This book was prepared based on the papers given at this session. The 13 articles of this volume, all written in English, discuss problems of transition and change from the Late Copper to the Early Bronze Age, that is more than a millennium from the later 4th to the end of the 3rd millennium BC. The book highlights temporal and spatial dynamics in the interregional interactions and communication networks among various societies of that period. Traditional typo-chronological approaches are supplemented by the results of absolute dating, anthropological and biochemical investigations and statistical analyses. Also new finds and materials are presented and new perspectives offered. The publication of the volume will certainly promote communication between the archaeological schools of western and east Central Europe, providing new aspects for future research as well. It will likewise contribute a great deal to our knowledge about the Carpathian Basin in the third millennium BC so important in bridging the prehistoric east and southeast to the west of the Continent.

The first covers the Baden, Kostolac/Bošáca and Vučedol cultures, demonstrating their genetic relationship and indigenous development. This development is marked by changes in distribution (the global horizontal stratigraphy) caused by the penetration of the Pit Grave Culture, our second theme. The third theme analyses the emergence of the EBA. Particular attention is afforded to the absolute chronology. Two excursuses discuss finds outside the Carpathian Basin, but part of its cultural sphere. The archaeological analysis of the cultures underpins a novel cultural and historical interpretation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of creativity frequently focus on the modern era yet creativity has always been part of human history. This book explores how creativity was expressed through the medium of clay in the Bronze Age in the Carpathian Basin. Although metal is one of the defining characteristics of Bronze Age Europe, in the Carpathian Basin clay was the dominant material in many areas of life. Here the daily experience of people was, therefore, much more likely to be related to clay than bronze. Through eight thematic essays, this book considers a series of different facets of creativity. Each essay combines a broad range of theoretical insights with a specific case study of ceramic forms, sites or individual objects. This innovative volume is the first to focus on creativity in the Bronze Age and offers new insights into the rich and complex archaeology of the Carpathian Basin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of the European Bronze Age is a wide-ranging survey of a crucial period in prehistory during which many social, economic, and technological changes took place. Written by expert specialists in the field, the book provides coverage both of the themes that characterize the period, and of the specific developments that took place in the various countries of Europe. After an introduction and a discussion of chronology, successive chapters deal with settlement studies, burial analysis, hoards and hoarding, monumentality, rock art, cosmology, gender, and trade, as well as a series of articles on specific technologies and crafts (such as transport, metals, glass, salt, textiles, and weighing). The second half of the book covers each country in turn. From Ireland to Russia, Scandinavia to Sicily, every area is considered, and up to date information on important recent finds is discussed in detail. The book is the first to consider the whole of the European Bronze Age in both geographical and thematic terms, and will be the standard book on the subject for the foreseeable future.
